161.548 - 167.297 Bob Stauffer

And we are going to go back to May 26, 1988. And here is Aiden Ganim.

0

167.377 - 193.768 Aiden Ganim

Well, it's a big one, Bob. On this day in 88, the Oilers become the first NHL team to record 11 home wins in one playoff run as they beat Boston 6-3 in Game 5 and win the Stanley Cup. The last Cup win with Gretzky on the team. He won a consmith with 43 points in 19 games. Now, what game did you say that was way back in 1988? Yes, sir. You said it was game five? No, that... Yeah, game five.

0

194.77 - 214.759 Bob Stauffer

All right. Well, you know what I'm going to ask you to do right here, right now, young gun? Okay. Is type up 1988 Oilers hockey reference. Okay? Just have... Hear me out here for a second because I'm going to tell a little story about that day. The Oilers finished the regular season second in the Smite division with a record of 44-25-11.

0

217.502 - 227.016 Bob Stauffer

You said it was in Game 5 that the Oilers beat Boston, right? Yep. If you go on that, have you been able to type up 1987-88 hockey reference? I'm on the reference right now.

227.236 - 228.978 Aiden Ganim

It's not showing me the playoff stats, though.

229.659 - 246.473 Bob Stauffer

It does right below... If you go to 87-88 Oilers roster and statistics, the Edmonton Oilers beat the Winnipeg Jets. Oh, wait a minute. Yeah, there it is. I was wrong. Okay, but there's a catch to this. The Oilers beat, you're not technically wrong.

246.773 - 269.357 Bob Stauffer

It was supposed to be the fifth game of the series, but for people of a certain vintage listening to the show right now that are dyed-in-the-wool Oilers fans, they know exactly what happened. The Oilers took out the Winnipeg Jets in five games, won four games to one in 1988. Then they played the Calgary Flames. Wayne Gretzky scoring a shorthanded goal in overtime. Right?

269.637 - 297.945 Bob Stauffer

Shorthanded goal in overtime in Game 2 in Calgary. The Oilers swept the Flames in four straight in 88. Okay? So now they're 8-1. They took on Bob Probert and the Detroit Red Wings. Beat them four games to one to go 12-2 in the playoffs. And then they won... The series, four games to nothing over Boston, but there were five games played in the series. Okay.

Chapter 3: What historical moment in Oilers history is highlighted?

736.237 - 761.097 Bob Stauffer

a broadcaster for the edmonton oilers and working along rod phillips for the last two years of his career and then spending um you know i'm in year 18 so 16 of those years working with uh jack michaels in the last six years of cam moon i i would have told you you're crazy like not my wildest dreams or having the privilege of hosting a two-hour show even during times that are tough

0

761.448 - 778.736 Bob Stauffer

even on days in which coaches get fired or managers get fired. But I'd be interested to know, when did you become an Oilers fan? Was there a specific moment? Like, I'll give you one for me, and it happened in the 1981 playoffs. I love Guy Lafleur. I like the Montreal Canadiens. I still love going to Montreal.

0

779.477 - 797.888 Bob Stauffer

I don't love all the politics in Quebec, but I love hockey in Montreal and how it's a religion in that market. And the Oilers were playing the Canadians. And Davey Hunter was, as Todd McClellan would say, inside Guy Lafleur's jersey. And Guy LaPointe had enough and went after Davey Hunter. And Hunter bested him in the fight.

0

798.388 - 816.008 Bob Stauffer

And Guy LaPointe grabbed Hunter's helmet and started swinging his helmet at Hunter's head. And the fans booed Guy LaPointe. They thought that was classless. I was like, wow, Montreal's got awesome fans. But that was the moment when I saw Dave Hunter flatten Guy Lafleur. I knew, damn it, I'm from Edmonton. Edmonton's my team. And that was hard for me.

0

816.376 - 836.562 Bob Stauffer

Because Guy Lafleur was right up in my acreage house basement room where I grew up as a kid, right beside the one with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and Farrah Fawcett. Okay, you know where I'm going here with that, but you know what I'm saying. So I love Guy Lafleur. That was a moment in 1981. So let's have some fun.

836.582 - 851.991 Bob Stauffer

You tell me when you became an Oilers fan, and we'll tell a few stories and spin a few yarns during the course of today's show. In the meantime, in between time, we... are going to go into NHL today for elite promotional marketing.

852.952 - 874.751 Aiden Ganim

Well, the Pittsburgh Penguins holding on to a key piece of their dynasty for a little bit longer, signing center Evgeny Malkin to a one-year contract that pays $5.5 million. In 56 games last season, he had 61 points. Colorado Avalanche played for their postseason lives tonight against the Vegas Golden Knights in Vegas. The Golden Knights holding on to a 3-0 series lead. Bob, you mentioned it.

875.051 - 893.295 Aiden Ganim

Canada taking on Czechia today at the World Championships. They won it 3-2. Now on to the quarterfinals, and it's a matchup we're all too familiar with. They play the United States next. And in the Memorial Cup, the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL have a shot at going undefeated through the round robin tonight. They play the QMJHL's Shikudomi Saganeh.

893.933 - 911.485 Bob Stauffer

All right, that's NHL Today for Elite Promotional Marketing, your local brand and merchandise specialist. Head to ElitePromoMarketing.com, 423 in Oil Country. We'll go into the Oilers now. Chapter 4: How did the Oilers perform in the 1988 playoffs?

927.937 - 931.263 Bob Stauffer

All righty, let's go to Aiden Ganim. Aiden, you got one for us?

0

931.403 - 946.148 Aiden Ganim

Yeah, this one's from OJ in Grand Cache. Born in Edmonton in 1976, his dad had WHA tickets, and as soon as his brain worked, it was the Oilers. After his dad's beer league game at St. Mary's Rink, he met Wayne Gretzky. It was huge in his young mind.

0

946.448 - 969.52 Bob Stauffer

All right, out of the 7-8-0, this text comes in saying, I used to be a Calgary fan. Can't believe that now. When the Flames traded my favorite player, Joe Neuendijk, for this Jerome Aguila that I'd never heard of, I switched the orders and fell in love with Doug Waite. I'm like, dude, I just want you to know Jerome Aguila on a personal level is my favorite Calgary Flames player of all time.

0

969.922 - 995.313 Bob Stauffer

uh brew crew says bob when mark massier stood up to larry robinson at center ice he won my respect and total support of the orders at 81 well mark had a stick wound up behind his head uh because larry robinson at that time was the biggest baddest guy in the national hockey league i mean five or six years earlier he had absolutely annihilated a guy by the name of Dave the Hammer Schultz.

0

995.614 - 1006.915 Bob Stauffer

All right, you can text us. We'll work our way through some more. It's 429. We got Cam Moon coming up, and we will head off to an 880 News weather traffic update with Randy Kilburn.
