Hello, Brian. How are you?
Fantastic, Bob. How are you? Good. I think we should be open with people here. You and me have lots of conversations, and I think we sort of hinted to it. You have a pretty unique relationship with Carolina owner Tom Dundon, don't you?
I do. I know Tom quite well. He's a terrific human being. Couldn't be happier for him. Or Tyler Dello, for that matter. As all the listeners know, when you're working in this business, to win a Stanley Cup is by far the most enjoyable and most important thing that you're working towards. So congratulations to both those guys. They've been knocking on the door for quite a while.
Happy and thrilled for them to see him get it done this year.
Is it fair to say Dundon and the Hurricanes do it differently?

Chapter 2: Who is Brian Lawton and what is his background in the NHL?
But I don't care how anybody's doing it. If they get the job done, all you can do is be, you know, a straight shooter about it and say, great for you guys. Congratulations.
We're joined by Brian Lawton, longtime NHL agent. as well as a man who was a general manager himself in his two years in Tampa Bay. He drafted Stephen Stamkos and Victor Hedman, two pretty good picks there that kind of built the template for a back-to-back Stanley Cup championship. And it took them some time to win too. So here's the deal. If the owners have been, I'm serious about this.
At the start of the year, a lot of people pick Carolina to win the cup. Edmonton and Florida had played in two straight Stanley Cup championships. The Oilers lose in seven and six. All the guys in markets like Calgary and Vancouver that hate the Oilers, they love it that the Oilers didn't win the Stanley Cup.
What are your thoughts on what Edmonton might have, you know, woulda, coulda, shoulda, forget about it, got bounced out in the first round. Was there a missed opportunity here? What do you think?
I think anytime you have Leon and Connor on the team, it's a missed opportunity. You know, when you add in Evan Bouchard and the pieces that they have, it just, you know, it would hurt a little bit because I believe they would have had a much better chance in Vegas of beating Carolina if they could have made it to the finals. What? That was a long way. It is a woulda, coulda, shoulda, but...
As you go through your years involved in this game, and for me as a player and as a GM, it's tough. All you want to do is take advantage of the great things you have in the organization. Edmonton has a lot of great things. It would have to hurt a little bit when you look at it, for sure. But it also would have to look like, you know what, we're not that far away.

Chapter 3: What unique strategies does Tom Dundon employ with the Carolina Hurricanes?
The Edmonton Oilers are not that far away from being a champion. They've got some really core things they need to fix, but that work can be done this summer. They can come back as a favorite next year. I expect them to. They just have too much to build off of.
Right. I know that you've, you know, Brian, you represented players. You started Octagon's player agency. Leon Dreisaitl, is he Octagon's highest profile player? I think he would be, wouldn't he?
Yeah, and they've got lots of good players. Rantanen's another client of theirs, Thomas Harley. Right. They've got a really, really diverse and deep list of players. But I would say Leon is their most visible. He's the top five player in the world at his position, and that may be not kind enough to him. That's pretty darn good.
You've seen the reports out there, and I know you've always felt, Bob, it's a player's league. And there's now multiple reports out there that the Oilers players, you know, we just had Elliot on and he talked about the fact that they met with the two coaches, according to Elliot, with both Mike Babcock and Peter Laviolette.
What are your thoughts on ownership and management having top end players involved in this?
I think it's a partnership more than ever now. It's a very strange time in the National Hockey League. We hear rumors of Dylan Larkin wants to get moved. Connor Hellebuck may be in that table as well. He exercised that option. Mitch Marner eventually exercised that option. It's a strange time, but I think to counterbalance that, the answer is very, very simple.
It's for management, president, GMs, you name it.
owner owner a hundred percent on the ownership you've got to know your players well and they've got to believe in what you're doing the teams that are having great success if anybody wants to understand what I'm talking about look up a clip with Jacob Slavin talking about just the relationship with the coach with Rodney Brindamore it's just pure gold that's what's going on it's not strange to me that Leon and Connor have been involved
That is not going to go away. I think you're going to see that strengthened throughout teams. It's a change. So it's a shock to a lot of people in the industry that have never had to deal with any of that. But it's called evolution. And the National Hockey League is evolving very, very quickly now in very, very positive ways, in my opinion. As a league, they've never been stronger before.

Chapter 4: How does Carolina's management approach player contracts and cap space?
You know, Mikey DiPietro, I think Boston's going to make him the backup next year. I'm serious. That's what I'm hearing out of Boston. There's a couple other pretty good young goaltenders. I know somebody brought up Montembeau today. You know, I don't know about that. Let's just see what happens here.
