You know, he's coming on with the cozy rights holder for the soft interview. He's been ducking me, Bob. You can ask him why he's been ducking me. Throw that right at him. See what he says.
As I recall, he didn't really like me much when he played here. You could say that about pretty much every player, couldn't you?
I enjoyed covering Chris. He was pretty playful. I liked him because if he didn't like your question, he'd throw a fastball back at your head, but then you could throw one right back at him, and he felt it was sporting. I liked it. It was always sporting with Pronger in those thrones, and I enjoyed covering him. What a hell of a year he had. Holy smokes.
Oh, man, it was a fun year. And you know what? Who would have thunk at that time in that series, as the Edmonton Oilers went head-to-head against Peter Laviolette, that some two decades later, I have Laviolette clearly in the two-hole for the coaching job at Edmonton. So Bruce Cassidy and John ā it is interesting that John Shannon thinks at some point Bruce Cassidy will be ā
allowed to interview wherever. I always find that interesting with John because John's got pretty good sources in the league because there's other people that are sitting there thinking this isn't going to happen and Vegas is never going to give Edmonton permission. Where's your headspace? We'll start with Cassidy and then we'll pivot to Laviolette. First of all, where is your headspace?
Do you think Vegas is going to provide all teams with the opportunity to interview at some point?

Chapter 3: What insights does Ryan provide on coaching changes in the NHL?
It's not going to happen. But you know what I'm saying, Bob? Do you think he's got the green light to do that, to spend that money?
I'm not sure where the control is in that relationship between Bill Foley, George McPhee, and Kelly McCormick. I don't know. Yeah.
I don't know. I mean, Elliot made the great point when he talked about Pete DeBoer coming back to bite them. And, you know, there was a night where they were sitting around having just got stung by their old coach sitting around the office afterwards going, you know, and that probably resonates. And that's probably a lot of what's resonating here.
But you fired him because you think someone else could do another job. Sorry, you removed him from that position.
because you feel like someone else can do a better job you went and asked permission from the flyers to bring in john porterello just like before you fired deborah and you asked boston and gained permission to bring cassidy in eight days after you fired the board yeah i mean i don't like it i think it's a poor way of doing business i think it's bad karma if you believe in that i think
I don't like the kind of precedent that it sets. I know it's happened before, but I just don't like any part of it. But I understand why they're doing it. But to take it this far and then just be like, psych, you can talk to him now. Like, it would just be ridiculous.
We'll see what ends up happening. So I have, and now I'm going to, so the general consensus, Ryan Rashad, is that Cassidy is seen as the best candidate. I have Laviolette as the clear number two. Now, they run a different defensive system.
Laviolette has historically ā there are people that believe that the Hurricanes have never stopped running as penalty kill from when he was there before, that Brendamore runs the same PK. They play man-on-man defense. Of course, Cassidy plays zone. Woodcroft played a hybrid. Knobloch played mostly zone. They run ā they're much more ā Laviolette's teams pressure the puck
similar more to like how Florida did, which I think would intrigue orders fans a little bit. Um, and certainly more aggressive through the neutral zone that Edmonton was in the Anaheim series. So I've got Laviolette, like, like to me, it's Cassie. If you can't get Cassie, I think Laviolette's at the top. And I'm just wondering where your head space is at with this.

Chapter 4: How does Ryan analyze the Edmonton Oilers' leadership dynamics?
He was around. Jerry was there. When the team's home, Jerry generally is there. He is around. So I understand people didn't like it. I understand people were upset. But this isn't nobody just firing this out there. I respect Jerry. Disagree with him on this one.
Yeah. So, and again, everybody's entitled to their opinion. I mean, one of the things that I often equate with players is, are you prepared to play hurt? Like I have, I work with two different broadcasters that do play-by-play and they ain't coming out when they've got laryngitis. All right. And I know it's a small little detail. They're playing hurt.
You know, I missed one game in 18 years and I couldn't stop throwing up in the press box. So they had to boot me out of there and send me home. And so, you know, that's, and I just look at players and I look at players that are like, we know how tough dry settle is. We know how tough McDavid is. I think we've come to terms with Bouchard's. We did not realize.
I'm on the plane and didn't realize that Evan was close to not being able to play in last year's Stanley Cup. I had no idea that he was at it. There is an expectation on that team amongst that leadership core that, damn it, you will play hurt. And for some of the guys that don't, That's like the guys that, you know, there's some guys that just can't. Ken Holland used to call them boo-boos.
Some guys just can't play through boo-boos. And I know that that's where some of the criticism and exasperation and frustration exists with some other players. But for those big boys, and they've got three, not two, three superstar players on that team, they all will play hurt.
Yeah, and I know that of them. I know that of them. I respect that about them. I agree with you, Bob. But that's just a part of it. And I would say I think this leadership group needs to recommit itself to a process and doing things the right way every single day. I think they know what the right way to do things is. It can be painful, it can be difficult, and it can be frustrating.
But I think they've learned a tough lesson this last year. I think if they're being honest with each other when they get together, I hope that leadership group is looking at one another and saying, we need to do a better job of setting a better tone every single day. Every day there's a process. Win the day. Don't get ahead of yourselves. Have some fun along the way.
Let others have some fun along the way. Let's not waste the regular seasons anymore because you can't win that way. You cannot win that way.
Sorry, Ryan. Is it easier to do with a new voice who's had success? No.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of player injuries on team performance?
Good question. We don't know right now.
Right. So, you know, the drum I've been banging on our show is I think they need to give themselves an option in the top six through free agency in some way, shape, or form. Do a better job in free agency than they have the last two years. Do a way better job. But give themselves an option. And the way to do that might be to forego ā
you know, Dickinson and to save some money and keep some powder dry, maybe go for something a little bit more offensive. And then finally start playing Nugent Hopkins as a third line center. Now you have to have the right wingers for him. You got to have someone that can win some draws. You got to have, you know, some sides with him. But is it finally time for Ryan Nugent Hopkins?
And I say this with all the respect in the world. for him to sort of take up that mantle and lock down a third-line position for this team once and for all and make them solid in that third-line spot. Savoy's emergence provides a pathway to Nugent Hopkins being able to shift some focus in his game.
He'll still be on the number one power play, but, you know, but again, you got to get the right wingers.
and then maybe you can go out and try you know don't start i coward there like i coward needs to earn it next season i know he's having a good world championships i know he had some good looks last year uh don't drop him on the leon dry settles willing to start next season make him earn it so that when he gets there he's earned it uh and maybe dry side will be a little bit more of a believer when he's sitting there you know with 12 american hockey league goals in the first eight games or whatever it is whatever you understand what i'm saying but give him some competition for that spot
find somebody else that can compete in that top six because captain as much as i like them bob and i think they should return them do you honestly think captain can go wire to wire on a second line through a regular season no i do not know so set the bar higher because if all you do is resign dickinson and resign everybody what's changed what's different powder somewhere and
to take that step. That's a fair perspective to have. That's why it's wonderful we got you on the show. How do people follow your stuff and got your back?
yes uh we're on youtube we are on x got your back it's got y-e-r got your back might have been a fundamental mistake misspelling a word in our title bob but it just felt like the right thing at the time so it's got your back and uh and of course you can see me on tsn and tsn.ca actually all week i'm doing these uh to the points all week so this morning i did like a 10 minute chat with craig button and i'll be doing them all week next week as well so i'll be all over the place this week
