Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Overdrive, Brian Hayes, Jamie McLennan, myself, Jeff O'Neill. I wonder if Lavi's going to big league us now and act like he doesn't know us.
Oh, yeah. He used us. He used us.
Yeah. I'm going to introduce him as our TSN hockey analyst, Peter Laviolette. See how he responds to that.
Yeah. He's going to give us the coach speak now, play the role, treat us like we're just bums, we're bothering him.
Yeah. Yeah, we'll see. I mean, he was along for the ride. We had a couple of great chats with Peter Laviolette.

Chapter 2: What insights does Peter Laviolette share about his hiring as head coach of the LA Kings?
breaking down the Habs run, what he thinks of the playoffs, who's going to win the thing. Then he gets hired in L.A., and I'll bet you he's got an L.A. Kings polo on, and he'll be in Santa Monica at the pier.
Oh, I love it.
He's in coach mode. He will be like one-word answers, all of that type of stuff. Not commenting on this. Not going to get into it, guys. Listen, gentlemen. Yeah.
We'll see. We'll see what he's got in store. We'll catch up with Peter in a few moments. And I guess, you know, the hockey world's bracing for the Edmonton Oilers higher, right? It doesn't sound like Bruce Cassidy's going to get the green light to talk with them. So is it Babcock? If it's not, who's it going to be? That's the vacancy that is still ā
You know, that's the one place to look and hire someone because the Leafs hired Jim Hiller today.
Do you still not find that, like, I understand rivalry, but. You're not letting a guy talk to a certain team. I don't think I've ever heard of it. There must be something.
It's got to be personal now. I think, guys, I think something, it's personal. I don't think that's just competitive nature going, we're not giving a good coach to a division rival that could be a good team.

Chapter 3: How does Laviolette view the current roster and its potential?
I get that understanding, but it might just be personal because they came out today. Was it today that the insiders were reporting that they are selectively ā so they've given Cassidy approval to talk to ā Well, one team.
I believe it was the Maple Leafs. That would be my assumption, like who else was looking to hire anybody. Now, Vegas hired Ryan Craig, who had been their head coach in the American League for a while. And maybe this was always the plan, that it was torts on a short-term basis. Win or lose, you're out. Ryan Craig is in. But, yeah, we'll see. I'm curious what Vegas ends up doing.
I'm curious what Carolina does.
That's also a fascinating story, guys. You take over a team, and he had some incredible record at the end of it. What is it, 17-3 or something under Torts? I don't know what it was, but in the regulars, it was crazy good. Takes them to the finals, and then it's like, thanks for the win. They used him as a rental.
I know, but, Jamie, sometimes when a guy takes over and wins a round, you're like, you've got to have this guy back.
Get to the playoffs. They get the job.
But here's the thing, guys. This is where I keep coming back to this. This organization worries about today. That's it. It's not sentimental. Hey, this guy took us to... In their mind, they didn't win the Stanley Cup. So what they're trying to do, if you're Vegas, trying to win it next year. It's not sentimental.
Hey, this guy played well for me, and I should sign him to a three-year deal or whatever. It is... They deem that it was a short-term fix to wake their group up. Now it's on to Ryan Craig. And it's the next guy. And I just... Somehow, you know, I know it's cutthroat, but you kind of got to admire it.
I don't dispute that. I don't dispute that. You know, on a different front, Max Scherzer's on the 15-day IL right before he was about to start tonight with back spasms. And I just wonder.

Chapter 4: What does Laviolette think about the Maple Leafs hiring Jim Hiller?
But... That's one we'll get into later this hour. Like Scherzer was supposed to pitch tonight, and he's not. His ERA's over 10. I don't know if we're going to see him again. Bieber, not a great rehab start today, but when Bieber's healthy, he's pitching. He's coming up, and he's going to play. So more on that later in the hour. We've got some role-play level of concern.
Might have to play the role of... You know, if you're a brewer in the Boston area, are you going to survive the week with Scotland in town? We'll get to that later this hour. But we got a guy on the line. He was an analyst for a while. He was a colleague of ours.
He was our buddy. Two weeks ago, he was our colleague. He was a colleague of ours.
He's going to have a scowl on now.
Chapter 5: What are the implications of coaching changes in the NHL?
He's going to hate our guts. Here's the new head coach of the LA Kings.
Here's Peter Laviolette. How are you doing? I was O-Dog's apprentice. You know what I mean? All I was doing was learning from the master. That's right. It's like full circle, old dog. You know what I mean? Like 20 years later, you're in the room, and now I'm just here taking you in and just trying to be better, just trying to be better.
Before we ask you anything, Lavi, have you done this yet? What's it like looking for a house in Los Angeles, man? It's got to be pretty sick until you look at the price.
Amen.
It's tough. Like I've never rented, you know what I mean? I've, you know, like I've always kind of just bought and, you know, work my way through it, depending on my kids and schools and whatever. And I think every time I've done it, I've come out on the good side of it. And so I feel like I saved that rent money. It didn't, you know what I mean? And so I'm looking at the price of houses.
I got my house down here in Florida. I'm looking at the price of houses and, you know, $4 million and it buys you nothing. Not that I can afford $4 million, you know what I mean? But, like, it buys you nothing. And so you've got to get up into $5 or $6 million to get a three-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot house. And I'm like, okay, let's look at the rentals. Let's look at the rental side of it.
And so you go on the rental side of it. And for that same, you know, for that same kind of a townhouse-y look with a two-car garage under and then there's 2,200 square feet up there, it's going anywhere between $16,000 and $19,000 a month.
Wow.
Oh, my God, dude. I thought you were going to say $100,000.

Chapter 6: How does Laviolette plan to embrace the LA Kings' identity?
When you went through the process, I'm sure you've coached a few of those players on the team already and have a little bit of familiarity with How did that go? And basically, what is your mantra coming in with this group? Kopitar's leaving, so you're going to have a little bit of switch in the leadership group type of thing. What do you make of this team?
Well, you're right about that. You know, that I'm going to have to get in there and see. Obviously, Drew Doughty's been through a whole bunch of wars and championship games and have come out on the good side of it. And there's others there as well. I think I'll get there and start to talk to players. It's been kind of a whirlwind, to be honest with you. I saw a few players when I was out there.
I've texted a couple of players, but I need to have some conversations coming up. I've been kind of working on the staff.
uh just just getting that in place and we were out there and like i said we you know we're out there for a little bit at the press conference met the owner and that was all really good so um now it's time to start getting more into the players and starting to reach out to them a little bit and and talk and communicate but um You know, I believe that there's some really good pieces in place.
I think, you know, some of the things that are obvious, and it's not to talk about their game in a bad way or a good way from last year, but there's things I think that just need to be better. You know, especially teams, I think that when you...
pull numbers and you, you know, if you can get a team that can get up into the top half, I even want to say top 10 and power player penalty kill, you know, that's going to help drive a team offensively five on five contributions to try and drive the game in your way. I feel like That's a big part of it. And so there's room for improvement in some areas out there.
And, you know, coming back healthy, that you're right, losing a guy like Enzi Kopitar, you know, that's a big loss. He was such a staple for that team for so many years and a great leader. you know, went on championship runs with that team back in just, I think it was 12 and 14, but just a successful team. And so, you know, I'm looking forward to get out there.
We're going to have to, like any team, it doesn't matter what the team is. It doesn't matter who it is. And I've experienced this all over, whether it was Carolina or whether it was Nashville or Philly or the expectations, whatever. You have to get in there and build it as a team. Like, Whatever that group does, it doesn't matter what you do the year before and after that year is over.
After this coming season is over, it won't matter what happened for the next year. You've got to go back in and continue to find a way to get it done. And I really, truly believe that the success of a team comes from what you build during that year.

Chapter 7: What challenges does Laviolette anticipate in his new role?
So you sound obviously excited, happy, ecstatic. You're in a great market. Were you at any point close to taking a job anywhere else, not name the L.A. Kings?
Yeah, I mean, you know, in all honesty, like I don't really like to talk too much when I have lots of friends that call and as things are going on, trying to get insight and scoops. But I was talking to a few teams and they were, I feel like I was down the road a little bit with some teams, but not to get into any details about it.
But this is the path that I chose, and, you know, I don't have any regrets about it. But there's always, I think, conversations, you know, inside of an interviewing process. There could be more than one. There was more than one when I went to New York. But I just think those conversations are sometimes better kept between the general manager and the interviewing person.
Sure. Well, if we ever get out to L.A., we look forward to seeing where you're living and where you end up landing.
It'll be a mansion. Yes, of course it will be. I'm up for the Winnebago. I think I'm going to go look. I've been looking at some boats and slips and trying to push it to my wife, but now I think I'm going to go look at the Winnebago and see if I can find a parking lot.
Love that idea. Love that idea. Right on the beach. They'll be very welcoming, I'm sure of it.
it's beautiful out there like it is i agree uh congrats on the gig best of luck with it peter and as always we appreciate you doing this all right guys stay in touch you got it thank you peter laviolette uh yeah head coach of the la kings and transition there anze copetar has been the face of that team for 20 years yeah and the captain and i'd say the I was about to say the greatest king ever.

Chapter 8: What are the best bets for the upcoming U.S. Open discussed in this episode?
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Stevie will make himself very comfortable.
I don't think there's any question that when Kevin Kilbane and Stephen Caldwell get done taking their headsets off, they go right to an Irish pub and drink together and talk about soccer. I know they do. I know that for a fact.
The two of them are thick as thieves, man. They just speak each other's language.
But isn't Stevie Scottish?
It doesn't matter, though.
I've sat in the green room with those two guys. It's my favorite thing on earth. When I'm there at the same time as them, I get my suit on, I sit down in the green room, and listening to those guys tell stories about soccer mates, and I flew to England, and that guy was... It's the best. They're legends, man. They're legends.
I just know that what we're seeing with Scotland and the city of Boston, that's a weekend back home with Stevie Caldwell and his buddies.
That beer probably tastes like trash and it's sold out in the city of Boston.
Imagine coming to the States and saying, I need Scottish beer. That's the only beer I can have.
