Blotting and war, getting in fights everywhere they go and they're scoring. But they're going to be in the St. Pat's gear tonight. Yeah.
Which, I like it. I actually think it's pretty cool. Like, I do... I like... I appreciate that... I guess they pay homage to the history of the team, to the city, and to being the same pads. And I think the colors are cool. I think they pop. You can only do it the one night. It's too over the top. It's a little bit too obnoxious for anything more than one night.
It's weird to have a different themed evening when I think most people that are going into the building tonight are going to watch Matthew Schaefer play. That's why you're going down to watch. Of course. You want to go see Schaefer play tonight. Yeah, you're right. And it only kind of underlines the things that Leaf fans start to say when the team goes sideways.
Oh, green's the color they're wearing? Well, that sounds about right, because they're all about one thing, the green. And they're going to make a lot of money tonight. They sell a lot of St. Pat's gear down there. Right. They make a lot of money. Yeah, they're not exactly. They're paying homage to the history. They're paying homage to profit. Yes, they are. They're not giving it away for free.
No, they're very good at paying homage to profit. It's not being sent back to Ireland or something like that. Exactly. But you know what? We're at that point, though, Hayes, where you're right. People aren't pretending to care about the team anymore. They're... They're in that cynical mode. Cynical, apathetic, call it what you want, resignation.

Chapter 2: How does the Leafs' current situation reflect fan sentiment?
He also might understand this is where it's going. I've been around the game for a long time. Nothing I can do. I'm going to work hard the rest of the way, and we'll see where it goes. And I've got two years left on my deal. And I'm making money anyway. If you want me to leave... Pay me. There you go. And I will be paid on the way out, which he will be.

But the guys, the people at the top, the ones in the suits, and this is what is particularly scary for the average fan, is they're the ones that really have to make the right choice here. They're the ones that need to breathe.
They need to figure out what the right play is, who should be at the wheel, And there's so much emotion and just negative energy that there's a very good chance they get swept up in it and just say, forget it. Everyone's out. Everyone's gone. Get rid of everything. And then you ask the question, which would be a reasonable one after they would do that. Okay, what now? Right.
Like, what are you doing now and who's doing it? Exactly. And I don't know if they have that clear vision right now. No, there's no easy vision, right?
That's the problem is that if you say, well, we gave it 10 years with this group, and on top of the fact we didn't make the playoffs this year, on top of the fact that they showed their gutless, heartless, you know, runaways in big moments again and again and again, their captain riding on the ground, Anthony Stolarz ripping a shred off him for Mason Marchment, running him and just lying there and nobody bothering him.
I mean, you go through the list, right? The list is incredibly long, and we just started it. even if you kind of just say, yeah, let's just move on. First of all, it's not your choice because all the important characters that you would want to move on from have no trade clauses. So you're going to have to involve them in some difficult conversations.
They're going to have complete control over where they go, if they go, or if they don't go. Because guess what? If they don't want to go, you ain't moving them. So that's the difficult part. And then the other thing is if you pivot to, Let's go younger. You have no youth. You literally have almost zero youth. Yeah, they don't have anything in the prospect pool. No picks, no prospects.
So there's no easy path. No, it's very difficult. They're in a very tough spot. Listen, objectively, you could take a step back and realize this is not shocking, not unpredictable. When you basically go all in for a decade, at the end of that, the light is going to dim a little bit. The bill comes due. Yes, at some point it comes due.
You trade picks and prospects and go for it and give that guy the deal and that guy the deal. Fire this guy. Okay, we're going for it. And in the moment, it all made sense. The problem is they never got the payoff. You know, they had the decade of going for it mentality without the banners that are going to sit there afterwards where you can say, well, we'll never forget that.

Chapter 3: What does the future look like for Brad Treliving and Craig Berube in Toronto?
Yes, he's not perfect. Not perfect. But he brought an edge, and he brought a little bit of puck moving. He skates better than most. All those things are great, but yeah, you're right. You can't have them both back. And by the way, we were saying this yesterday, all the sort of venom that was spit at Brennan Shanahan retrospectively for what he did in his lame duck year as team president.
When he was... Right. Go in, get him, pay it, pay it, go get Carlo, go get Lott. Yeah, a lot of people... Like, Tree Living wears those. Tree Living wears the Carlo... Shanahan was pushing. Shanahan was right there. And he knew that it was now or never. I got to get to the conference final or I'm out of a job. Pelley essentially told him that.
And Pelley later on said that, that you had to advance to a conference final for Shanahan to be back. And so the idea that you bring... Radtree living back in a lame duck year, after you just spent all this time complaining about what happened when you had another executive in the lame duck year, you don't want that energy around. I got to make it happen now or never.
Guess what happens when you do that? Then you put yourself in an even worse position to move forward if you got to blow it all up. Yeah, it's a very difficult sales pitch, internally and externally. And your players are looking at it. I know no one wants to hear about what Matthews thinks or Nylander thinks. The fact is they have a big say.
They're huge pillars of the organization, and they want to know. Now, they're responsible for a lot of this, or some of it. They're part in it, and they have a huge chunk in terms of the pie chart, in terms of player personnel. Best players, highest paid guys. They're responsible for not showing up in the biggest moments for a decade.
not playing well enough this year, but when the dust settles, their voice is going to be heard. And I'd have to believe if the plan is we're keeping those two guys moving forward, then they're going to want to know what the hell is going on here. Wow. Who's coaching. Who's the GM. How are we going to improve this team? Like I look at the Matthews stuff and forever.
It was like, well, you only got this much time and then his deals up. And I actually look at, look at it, you know, almost as an in, in the inverse. Now, Not as in like, you got two years to win before he's gone. If the plan is you want him to be a Leaf for life, then I could get behind that plan.
I think it's you got two years to prove to him why the next seven or eight are going to be worth it for him to stay. Which may be, hey, we're not going to be that good, but we're going to reload the system. We're going to get bad deals off the books. We're going to bring in the right coach. We're going to bring in the right GM. We're going to bring in a president of hockey operation.
We're going to invest all this money into all these different areas. So I don't look at it necessarily as the clock is ticking before he leaves. I think it might be the clock is going to start on July 1st in two years. If you want to pitch to him, this is why we want you to stay around. Yeah.

It gets better, I think, every time it comes back around. I mean, I'm sad for Canada. At least they got into the playoff. But I didn't realize that it was an Olympic qualifier. Canada can't make the Olympics now. In baseball. Really? I did not know that. I didn't know that. I realized that retroactively, that this was the qualifier for the North American teams. Wow.
