Chapter 1: What insights does Pete DeBoer share about the Winter Olympics experience?

0.166 - 26.784

Hour 2 Overdrive continues, powered by FanDuel. Brian Haziodog, Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles, McLennan, Peter DeBoer coming up. Sure, Pete is dying to come on and talk about Craig Berube's comments from the other night, but... He's been in that spot where he has been just not happy with anything and calling out his team. Pete famously has called out individual players.

0

26.844 - 50.231

He's called out the team in general. But Berube's postgame the other night was... Pretty telling. I mean, basically saying no heart, no brains, no anything, just going out there and playing. That's tough. What did you make of it? I mean, you know, you watched the game the other night. It was like Ottawa played really well, but the Leafs are better. You know what I mean? Better than that.

0

50.411 - 68.476

Better than that type of effort. Better than that type of determination. And you knew it was clockwork. You're going to come out and be stupid and try and show everybody, hey, I care in the third period. It was too little too late. You know what I mean? It was predictable. I was talking to somebody after the second period. I said, you watch.

0

68.496 - 86.306

They're going to try and start a line brawl or do something and show everybody they care. So waste everybody's time. Yeah, that's exactly what it was. And, you know, Stolarz was in there and he wasn't happy. Listen, they had to react. I think it was, was it, it wasn't Cousins that jabbed at him. I can't remember who it was. No, it was Ridley Gregg. It was Gregg who did it.

0

86.346 - 102.311

Yeah, you know, there better have been a reaction, but you're right. It was completely meaningless at that point. But, yeah, I mean, this is what we're going to get for the next six weeks. You know, is it the coach? Is it the players? Has he lost the room? You know, do you let the players off the hook?

Chapter 2: How did Canada perform in the gold medal game against the United States?

102.712 - 119.256

Because that always comes up. Like, we just referenced what's going on in Edmonton, right, where it doesn't mean they're going to move off Knobloch or they should move off him. Or another coach for those guys. But that's the thing, though. In Edmonton, they have fired through a lot of coaches in the McDavid era. A lot of coaches. Yeah.

0

119.236 - 141.121

Like the Leafs have – Matthews has played for three coaches. You know, it's not out of the realm of possibility that you look at a scenario and say we just need to change it or freshen it up or whatever. And I don't know. I don't know what the answer is. I don't know what it's going to be by the end of the year. You talk about freshening it up. If it goes – what is it, 21 or 22 left? 22.

0

141.662 - 160.487

If there's 22 and 17 are like what we just saw on Saturday night with the players' comments, the coaches' comments – That becomes a dreadful scenario, man. For the coach, I would think. From a security standpoint, how do you possibly come back? It's almost like the players get a hall pass where it's like, ah, nothing to see here. You guys stunk. Nobody cares. Season's over.

0

160.747 - 179.457

But the coach has got to answer those questions, and it's painful, man. Do you guys think, like... The team played tentative the other night. Are they waiting for a shoe to drop? Are they waiting for a trade? Are they waiting for something? They looked uninspired, and it happens. We've talked about it. I complained about it all year long.

0

179.817 - 209.716

The product is not good some nights where teams look tired, teams look uninspired. After the Olympics, it's just been a weird... Hockey's been back to weird, weird product again. I expect them to play better tonight in Philly. I really do. I expect them to. But what does that mean? I think those two games in Florida, it sunk in. That's it.

Chapter 3: What challenges did the Canadian team face during the tournament?

210.077 - 226.838

They may have been able to build themselves up coming out of the break. 25 games left. They're six points out. You got to go on a heater. They were probably all doing the math themselves. And then they get beat up twice. They did not play well. They deserve to lose both. And I'm sure the flight home was like, all right, boys, that's it.

0

227.119 - 246.783

You know, internally, not saying it obviously out loud, but internally. And that's what it looked like on Saturday. Like the game on Saturday almost looked like game 82. Like, I don't want to get hurt. Let me get out of here. My summer's coming up. And you mix that with the trade deadline, which I'm sure is leading to a lot of nervous energy and anxiety.

0

247.163 - 265.967

You know, like guys know they're going to be traded or they could be traded. You know, as for the Craig Berube situation, I don't know. I mean, it certainly didn't look like a team that was dying to play for their coach. You know, I mean, that's just a reality. When you're playing like the way they played out of the shoot coming out of the Olympic break.

0

266.69 - 285.006

It doesn't look great in terms of the connectivity between the players and the coach. But it's ultimately going to be up to the GM, I guess. Moving off a coach right now, I don't know what that... No sense. You're not salvaging anything. In L.A., they moved off Hiller because they can still make the playoffs.

0

285.747 - 301.681

I don't know if they will, but it's obviously been troubling out there, and the Pacific is so bad, 92 points might get you in. 93 points could get you in. With the Leafs, it's over now. Like, with Berube, without Berube, Scotty Bowman in his prime. It doesn't make a difference. They're not making the playoffs.

301.921 - 326.363

Well, yeah, and they're going to move away from players potentially this week, right, in seller mode or at least retool mode, don't you think? Again, that's not confirmed, but I just feel like, you know, reading between the lines of what Pierre was intimating at is like, hey, you know, there might be some moves you think that are weird, but that's more for the future, for next year type of stuff.

326.343 - 349.576

Yeah, that I find curious. They're linked to Robert Thomas or something like that. Is that what they need? Robert Thomas is a good player, but we have all looked at it and said, this defense core needs to be completely overturned. And you're going to go get Robert Thomas? Since I've been working at TSN, I started looking at Trey.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Craig Berube's coaching style?

349.616 - 373.223

I wouldn't say differently, but sometimes I just take a step back and take a different angle, and I'm like... If the St. Louis Blues are like a young core, what in the hell is the reason that they want to move off the player? And you've got to do a deep dive because there's something there that he's not going to be a part of the fold. So what the hell is it? Is it inconsistency?

0

373.283 - 394.856

Do you know what I mean? Yeah, why is St. Louis moving off the young player? It's like Santander. He hit 44 home runs for the Baltimore Orioles, and they didn't want to retain his services. Tell me why. Or do a deep dive into the why. Because anyone else that hits 44 dingers, the team can't wait to write a blank check and say, fill in the numbers.

0

395.617 - 416.766

And we found out why they walked away from him, didn't we? Yeah, I would say now we have a pretty good answer. Yeah, it's curious. It doesn't mean they're going to do it. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors out there right now. Well, what do you give up? That's the other thing, Hayes. They have nothing to give up, Jamie. You can be linked to a lot of players, but what are you giving up?

0

417.127 - 443.458

They need picks and prospects. Obviously, the live roster needs to be shuffled a little bit, but they need picks and prospects. where I was talking to an AHL coach yesterday, and we were going through other teams. Montreal is in unbelievable shape. It's crazy how they've done a really good job because Montreal has a very good NHL team,

0

443.438 - 464.283

But you look at every position has a young player coming up as well. That's right. Goaltender, defense, everything. Goaltender, defense, forwards. So Montreal is not only set right now at the NHL level that they're going to add to, but they've got some prospects that can play in the NHL right now. They might be able to use them for currency to add to their NHL. That's exactly right.

464.904 - 485.038

And that's, again, what is deflating for Leaf fans is that Montreal – knocked them out in 21 in very embarrassing fashion, and then said, we got to completely reset. And now they've flown past them, and they're in a much better position for success today and over the next three to five years. They got everyone locked up. They're younger.

Chapter 5: How are the Toronto Maple Leafs handling their current season struggles?

485.098 - 501.32

Their cap situation's set. They got depth. They've got a management team that's got a plan and they've stuck to it. The Leafs, I just get the impression, are just flying by the seat of their pants. They're just like, what are we going to do now? It's the worst position to be in. You want to retool, reshuffle.

0

501.34 - 520.083

You've got no picks, no prospects, and a bunch of guys on the roster that ain't cutting it. That is death, dude. It definitely can be. And if you're desperate, you're going to dig yourself even deeper. And that's another core element of all this. How much desperation is in the organization right now? How many guys are trying to just keep their jobs?

0

521.047 - 543.529

We don't know the answer to it, but it could lead to some bigger mistakes. All right, leaves Philly tonight. There's a bunch of games in the NHL. There's a game at 11 a.m. this morning. Yeah. Detroit-Nashville at 11 a.m. for some reason. It's crazy. Here's a guy that has been around the NHL for a long time. He was over there in Italy, and he's back home now.

0

543.589 - 567.974

Here's our good friend Peter DeBoer joining us on the Maple Toyota Hotline. How are you doing, Pete? Good, man. How are you guys doing? Oh, we're doing pretty well. We're doing pretty well. We're trying to settle into what's going on in the NHL right now. Have you settled back into North American lifestyle or what? I have. I was 34 days on the road. Longest road trip I've ever been on in my life.

0

568.375 - 592.443

I left, I think, January 26th or 7th for Milan and got back home last night. So it's been... It's been a grind. I got a lot of dirty laundry, a lot of really good memories, you know, and obviously didn't end the way we wanted it to, but pretty special event to be able to participate in.

Chapter 6: What factors are affecting the Blue Jays' starting pitching lineup?

592.983 - 619.437

Pete, before we dig into the hockey, did the coaching staff find a deal or a bargain on haircuts over there? It should have been like 30 bucks for all you guys combined to get your hair cut. Talk. Todd brought his shearer, so we all lined up at his door and took care. Actually, Coop's got a decent head of hair, and Butch has a decent head of hair, but Todd and I use the same barber.

0

621.819 - 642.479

Yeah, well, listen, man, you've got to be in style over in Milan, right? That's pretty high-end stuff over there, Pete. You guys rocking a Lululemon every day, or did you mix it up? You know what? It was awesome. I mean, it was my first Olympic experience. I was on the staff to go to Beijing. We didn't get to go because of COVID.

0

643.46 - 667.153

And because I'm not working this year for the first time in decades, I actually got to go over a week early. I moved into the Olympic Village. Lived a week in the village, walked in the opening ceremonies in the Lululemon outfit. I was near the back. I didn't charge to the front. I let the athletes that are supposed to be seen get up front there, but I did get to walk in the back a little.

0

667.133 - 696.869

through the stadium with 80,000 people there. It was an unbelievable life experience. Once the hockey tournament started, it became more of a hockey experience, but there were some spectacular life experiences in there that I'll never forget. Pete, I was talking to James Duffy, and he said he was so focused on the hockey, obviously because he was working so much, but it was rink, hotel.

0

697.611 - 719.949

Did you actually get to go see some other events and experience stuff, or were you just doing meetings, hockey, hockey, hockey? Yeah, you know what? Oh, that's a great question. It was a really spread out Olympics. I mean, the skiing was three hours on a train up into the mountains. In Milan, we had speed skating, figure skating and hockey.

720.67 - 741.775

I did get to see the short track speed skating, which is phenomenal to see live. TV really doesn't do it justice. It's roller derby on skates. And those guys are absolutely flying. The one I saw was nine laps around the rink.

741.755 - 763.277

And I liken it to, you know, I can remember bag skating teams, you know, and you do four laps one way and you remember, I mean, the lactic acid, your legs are straight after four laps. These guys at nine laps aren't even aren't even sweating hard yet. It was it was incredible. But I did see some short track. I did get up. We had a day off.

Chapter 7: What is Bryan's FanDuel Best Bet for the upcoming games?

763.357 - 790.74

I did take the train up and saw the big air jump. The female one where the Canadian girl won on her last run, which was awesome. So, you know, I did get to see a couple other events. So, Pete, we're talking about the hockey and the experience overall. You know, one thing I remember talking to, you know, teammates and friends recently about their Olympic experience was, did you feel the pressure?

0

790.78 - 812.682

Did you feel like, you know, everyone was watching? Like, once you get into the games and that, did you, you know, was there another layer of pressure that you felt just because of what was at stake? I think being part of Team Canada in men's and women's hockey, I think that comes with the territory.

0

812.722 - 839.616

Especially with the political environment and everything going on now, I think we all felt that weight and that responsibility and What I would tell you is I thought our guys wore it as well as anybody could. I was really proud of our effort. I was really proud of the fact we played our best game of the tournament in the gold medal game when it mattered most.

0

839.596 - 867.2

You know, a little bit of karma in the four nations final. I think the U.S. was without Quinn Hughes. You know, they had some injury issues. This key guys, you know, this time around, you know, we lost Morrissey in game one and Sid, obviously, in the final. quarterfinal. I think the injuries probably went against us this time around. Credit to the U.S. for finding a way to win.

0

868.161 - 897.503

I was really proud of our group's effort when it mattered most. A lot of Canadian hockey fans, they were loving the three-on-three after Mitchie scored against checks, and then when you guys lost 3-on-3, they thought 3-on-3 in overtime was stupid. So, where does the coach stand on it? You know, I hate elimination games at anything less than 5-on-5.

897.523 - 923.579

I can live with a power play in overtime that's warranted where someone wins because the other team took a penalty, but I have a hard time with it. I think that's the beauty of the NHL playoffs. Yes, we could play all night. Some of the most epic games in the history of the NHL playoffs have been those double, triple, quadruple overtime games.

925.562 - 942.646

It sounds like sour grapes now, and you're absolutely right. We were on the right end of it earlier in the tournament, but I'm more of an NHL playoff traditionalist. I think hockey should end the way it starts, which is five on five.

942.807 - 963.309

Well, I think the one thing they have to do is, I don't think they're going to look at any change, but you've got to have the gold medal game on Saturday because they were wanting that thing done because of the closing ceremonies right afterwards. So it's like, if you want to do it normal, do the game on Saturday and you're not worried about it. Yeah, no, you're 100% right.

963.349 - 970.843

That's the exact reason they wanted a firm ending to it. And I don't believe they're going to make a change from everything I've read.

Chapter 8: What final thoughts does the team have about the NHL landscape?

970.903 - 997.005

And, you know, that's fine. You know, I think as Team Canada, I believe the next Team Canada can play any way you want to play. uh and we'll be prepared for that but uh you know it would have been nice to to have that game continue five on five because i really felt we were we had tilted the ice for the majority of that game with Pete DeBoer here on Overdrive.

0

997.666 - 1023.051

So prior to having you on, we were talking about coaches speaking with the media after tough games or bad games. I know you've had your experience in that field many times, Pete. Can you take us through the process of getting off the bench knowing I'm going to face the media in, what, seven or eight minutes. Does a PR guy get to you? Yeah, what happens? Do you care about that?

0

1023.451 - 1045.689

Yeah, take us through the whole process. Your head's ready to explode. Something happened. Your team played terribly, whatever it was, and you know what's coming. You know the media's waiting for you, and they've got some daggers out. What's that seven, eight, ten-minute process like for a coach? Yeah. Well, you know, it's not easy. And I can, you know, I'm speaking firsthand of that.

0

1045.769 - 1066.652

And someone who's obviously, you know, hasn't handled every one of those situations exactly the way you'd like to. I can tell you, you know, from what I've heard, I haven't been involved with teams like this, but there are teams out there. I think the city you're living in might be one where the coach actually gets some talking points from,

0

1066.632 - 1096.47

uh prior to going out in front of the media you know whether they're analytics based or uh you know messaging based um i haven't worked in that type of environment i'm not sure i'd want to i i think i think uh the the genuine the the genuine message i think is always more important um you know having said that i think you always you always have to check your emotions too um

1096.535 - 1124.367

But, you know, it's not easy because a lot of those nights you're walking into, you know, situations where guys are trying to lead you or get you to say things that either are taken out of context or you're trying to be honest and they're going to use it against you. And, you know, that's just the reality of the sensationalism of today's media. So there's a lot of traps there.

1124.687 - 1154.46

And it's not easy to navigate when you're walking off a bench and you've got the emotions of having just lost, you know, or your season just ended, you know, within minutes before. So, you know, it's one of the toughest parts of the job. In this market, you know, people chitter-chatter about everything, and Hazy B here complains about everything, the players, the coaches.

1154.48 - 1179.24

Can you just, in your own thoughts and words, as a coach, if there's three basic principles that you think the head coach in the National Hockey League is kind of responsible for, what would you say those would be? Do you think defensive responsibilities is the coach or... Is it just you've got to deliver the message and the players ultimately are the ones that got to do it? Yeah.

1179.941 - 1201.601

I mean, the short answer to that, oh, is winning. You know, I mean, that's what we all get judged on, you know, and nothing else really matters but that. I can tell you, I think as a coach, I haven't done this for a long time, the places... You can probably have the most influence on your team is on how you defend.
