What are the first impressions of the brand‑new Madrid circuit?

Matt Gallagher 0:05
Hello everybody and welcome back to the B1 Podcast with Matt and Tommy. New track alert. New track alert. The sirens are here, and it is very exciting indeed. To see it in the flesh, isn't it, Tommy? They they built it. It's complete. The whole rumours leading up to it was it's not gonna be ready here, it's not gonna be ready there. I have seen some weird pictures of people having to sit on like literal gravel where GA's supposed to be, but we won't talk about that right now. We'll talk about the circuit, because that is done and we saw some action today.
Tom Bellingham 0:40
We did. Yeah, the the circuit did exist. We saw it. A lot of rumors suggesting that it wouldn't be ready on time, but we're here racing and uh my word, yeah, it was the Trek Evolution Day, very much so, wasn't it?
Matt Gallagher 0:55
Oh track evolution day. Absolutely. Maybe that should be a day. Right, so before we get into everything Spanish Grand Prix related and Madrid, the new circuit, we need to do a bit of a a news update. Because there's been sort of some some rather large quotes, things spoken about after Monza, first and foremost, about the team that I am currently wearing, and Charles admitting that he could have done better. In the Lewis Hamilton incident at turn two, lap one. Uh yeah, every But screams
Tom Bellingham 1:25
the teachers told him off and then he said, Yeah, it probably was me.
Matt Gallagher 1:29
I mean I am sure 'cause that there were clear the air talks, Hamilton saying there's no bad feeling now, things like that, you know, we're all moving forward. But I can also imagine that Ferrari would have done some stepping in. Uh you w we were speaking about before, weren't we, Tommy, how the the higher powers may well have uh had a little word with their drivers to make sure that they they play nicely, especially at their home race. And what has come of it is Charles Leclerc in the media saying Yes, we w I I will take it on board and I'll do better next time.
Tom Bellingham 1:58
Yeah, it needed to happen, didn't it? They needed to have a discussion about it. Um, because obviously it got very messy last time out. The the quotes that we didn't kind of cover in the podcast all too much as well was we heard Charles Leclerc kind of saying, Oh yeah, we both should have done better and then Hamilton pretty much did the the breaking bad quit of we, who's who's we? Um, by saying that, you know, he was ahead. So yeah, they've they've cleared the air, um and so much so you could tell we'll discuss this moment later, but there was a moment in uh F P one where uh team radio uh happened that very much uh screamed This is not what I really think, but I'm thinking about what's happened before and I'm going to be broadcast so I will be careful what I say.
Matt Gallagher 2:47
Absolutely. Uh before we get into all of that, of course we are still pre weekend at the moment. Charles Leclerc Well, it's not pre-weekend, it was today what we saw. Um, is the fact that he is running an old spec engine as far as what we've been told in commentary and and uh and so forth is the fact that basically the big crash in Monza, they're going to roll that out in free practice one Baku to see if it works or not. And therefore for this weekend so that they don't take a penalty because it's not going to be an easy track to overtake. Uh instead LeClair will be running Aduo One engine. Um uh which I would be more upset about if it actually brought anything particular uh i of of of advantage to the Aduo two because Ollie Behrman's come out and said that the the engine's not really done a huge amount.
Matt Gallagher 3:38
Uh so I really don't see it maybe uh affecting Leclerc all too much this weekend, but it will be my sole excuse should he be slower than Hamilton this weekend for sure.
Tom Bellingham 3:47
Yeah, I look forward to an extra five points in drive ratings because of the uh the argument. Oh yeah, hundred percent. Yeah. He's saying you only
Matt Gallagher 3:53
can get up to
Tom Bellingham 3:53
the sixth gear. It is not a a power trek, is it? So of all the the places you want this to to happen, um yeah, they'll they'll obviously test it in Baku. Hope it all goes to plan. Um but it's a sensible choice for for Ferrari. Obviously there'll be maybe some slight advantage, but it didn't.
