Quantum bits, or qubits, can exist in multiple states simultaneously, thanks to a property called superposition. This means a qubit can represent a 1 and a 0 at the same time, making quantum computers exponentially more powerful than classical ones.Majorana 1 is built with a breakthrough class of materials called topoconductors. These materials allow for the creation of topological qubits, which are small, fast, and digitally controlled. The significance of this is huge. According to Chetan Nayak, Technical Fellow and corporate vice president of quantum hardware at Microsoft, Majorana 1 can scale to more than a million qubits on a single chip. This is a critical step towards achieving reliable, fault-tolerant quantum computing.Imagine solving complex problems that currently take classical supercomputers longer than the age of the universe to solve. That's what Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently highlighted when discussing Google's own quantum research milestones. However, Pichai also noted that practical quantum computers are still five to ten years away due to the challenges of error correction and the need for extreme conditions like near absolute zero temperatures.Microsoft's Majorana 1 addresses some of these challenges. The topological qubits in Majorana 1 are designed to be more stable and less prone to errors. The company has also developed digital switches that can measure the quantum state of these qubits with an error probability of just 1 percent.
