What did Craig Counsell say about the Cubs’ chances in the NL Central?

Matt Spiegel 0:01
Rahimi and
Vinny Rotino 0:01
Grody. Let's go live to our hotlight, Nicrow Armstrong. What's going through your mind right now? Why should profanity said top of the mind? You gotta let it flow. And I feel like that's exactly what happened. Our poor producer Ray spilled his coffee, so thanks for christening our studio.
Matt Spiegel 0:18
Middays 10 a.m. to two on the score. Score score score. There's the 1-0 pitch. Bounce to short. This could do it. Arias will throw to first. Ball game over. Cubs win game one. 17-3.
Vinny Rotino 0:34
That is courtesy of Pat and Ron on our Northwestern Medicine Cubs Radio Network. This is Rahimi and Grody, but today it is Rahimi and Spiegel. Matt Spiegel 1:13
We ordered the same beverages. Same. And that's when we became a team today. I love it. Yes.
Vinny Rotino 1:23
I already I already felt that way with Christine, your wife, because I see her all the time out and about. You guys have hung out
Matt Spiegel 1:29
at at sluggers way too hammered. And and actually I shouldn't say that. As hammered as you want to be. It's it it's your it's personal preference.
Vinny Rotino 1:37
We we both enjoyed our presences greatly.

How likely is the Cubs’ chance to win the division according to the analysts?

Vinny Rotino 1:40
But I I'm glad to see that you and I are finally on the same vibe as Christine and I, that's for sure. We just we just love baseball and day games. Is that is that wrong? Is that is that wrong?
Matt Spiegel 1:48
Well no, you you love baseball. I love talking baseball with you. Always have. And uh and there's like I mean you know, th there's a lot of interesting things about this series because Cubs Brewers, you know, just like last year, when they were one game back on the first of August, and by the time that five game series began on August eighteenth, they were eight games back. And Cub fans remember what that felt like. This month feels the same, right? You pulled to within three games, then all of a sudden this series starts that you've been looking forward to and you're eight games back. So are you really going for the division or not? I think Fangraf's had him at two percent chance to win the division.
Vinny Rotino 2:28
So you're telling me there's a chance?
Matt Spiegel 2:30
There is. I I I I hate that I just brought up those division percentage things 'cause they drive me freaking crazy. Like Cool Standings was the first one. You remember Coolstandings dot com?
Vinny Rotino 2:41
No. Oh,
Matt Spiegel 2:41
Dan Bernstein really knew a lot about cool standings.
Vinny Rotino 2:44
I'm sorry to be deficient in this area. I was probably just watching games. No, yeah, right, you're just watching I just watched games. That's how I learned things. You were
Matt Spiegel 2:52
Feeling a season. Yeah. You were looking at a box score. You're reading the stage. They were cool enough as they were. All right. Boy, that felt good to get that out. Um but it's
Vinny Rotino 3:03
baseball tonight.
Matt Spiegel 3:04
So eight games back um of the Brewers, what's Craig Counsel's approach? I don't know if he talked about it in the pre-game media scrum, but I was alerted by a friend of the show that he did talk about it with our guy Ron Coomer on the pregame.

Why do the hosts think the team should focus on winning each game instead of the division?

Matt Spiegel 3:20
And there's a a different kind of trust and chemistry there. Listen to Craig Counsel describe yesterday in pregame how he's looking at this. Brewer's series.
Craig Counsell 3:30
Here's how I'm looking at this. We've got twenty-five games left. Um we're trying to win as many games as we can. Um whatever team is in front of us. Um so it it doesn't you know that this team's in front of us. You know, we're we're a waves behind them. Um and the and you know, we've got our work cut out for us in terms of catching them. And it's frankly it's improbable that we catch them if if you're being real. Um so we serve sacrifice future games for current games here. I think it's i really important that we just think about today, play a good game, play it straight, play it hard, um, know that this is a really good baseball team and then move on to the next day.
