Chapter 1: What are Jed Hoyer's thoughts on the Cubs' pitching injuries?
I'm concerned.
Yeah, I mean, we're in a rough spot. Yeah. You know, and we're going to have to, I think we can get through it, you know, through the All-Star, you know, it's through the All-Star break, you know, to the All-Star break, and then I think, but, yeah, we're going to have to, it's going to be a little bit of a puzzle until then.
That was Craig Council before we heard about Ben Brown going to the injured list. So it's gotten worse. This is Rahimi Harrison-Grody on 104.3 The Score. And Ben Brown's injury, I think, has gotten to the point where when everybody knew the severity of what happened in 2024, where he had a benign growth, and we understand that his neck is yet again a concern.
I feel like the overall opinion about this Marshall is just from fans, from listeners, from everybody. We're all just hoping he's okay.
Chapter 2: How severe are Ben Brown's and other players' injuries?
Could this be something that derails his entire career if this is persistent? That's to the point where I'm at with this. I would have loved to have seen him have a season where he really was putting it together. And that is also really sad that it's not happening. But at the same time, I've gotten to the point where I'm wondering how this is going to affect his whole career.
Layla, if you go back to 2024 and understand that that happened in June and that we are in June and that he didn't pitch again the rest of that season. Yeah. The first thing that came to my mind is, well, he's definitely not going to pitch again this season. And I'm not saying that that's true. That's just like what the expectation is now.
Chapter 3: What strategies are being discussed to stabilize the Cubs' pitching rotation?
Because as you said, this is serious stuff we're talking about.
The group think recently, I want to say in the past year, has typically I'm not one to like go with the mob unless it's the Twitch mob. But take, for example, the attitude toward Kyle Tucker and how everybody seemed to be just like, we're done with this. You know, we've all moved on in some way, shape or form. Or with Justin Steele, when we all read the tweet, we were like,
oh, this doesn't sound like this guy's pitching this year. Now we hear Jed Hoyer confirm that that happened earlier this week on Mully and Haw. And then he said he doesn't expect him to start again just to have that clarity of the discussion. And then we hear what Craig Council had to say about Ben Brown's injury and how he won't be re-evaluated for a month.
And I think that is more than fair given what he's going through.
Chapter 4: How does Pete Crow-Armstrong impact the Cubs' performance?
The state of the pitching continues to get worse and worse as we've seen. So Jed Hoyer talked to Zach Zaidman. He was in New York yesterday, which I think is the right thing to do as the president of baseball operations. You travel with the team. You address the questions that need to be asked. He sat down with Zach. We want to play the whole thing. We're calling it the full Zaidman.
It's a Friday. We can be a little funny on the score.
Chapter 5: What is the current state of the Cubs' pitching staff?
But we want to play it for you to listen to how he talks about everything and just understand that I feel like a lot of us are in the same place when it comes to how we look at this season right now.
It's been a strange week. Certainly, it's nice to see us playing better. We are scoring runs. I feel like we went 35 games or so and just couldn't seem to put things together. And now, like the last 10 or 12 games or so, we've been hitting well. This is kind of what we usually look like. But yeah, it's challenging. On Tuesday, we lost two of our best pitchers for quite some time.
We've had injuries before that.
Chapter 6: What are the Cubs' plans for the upcoming trade deadline?
So you've got to play the hand you're dealt, and that's just the reality of the season. I thought our guys did a great job yesterday knowing about the injuries and going out and sweeping a doubleheader and playing really well. So guys are going to have to step up, both pitchers and hitters, and we're prepared to do that.
You made a trade late last night, announced today. You get David Peterson from the Mets. Is that just to try and stabilize the rotation here?
Yeah, you know, he's a guy that we've been talking to him about for a while. It didn't just come about because we're in New York. You know, he's a guy, he's a ground ball guy. He's been somewhat unlucky this year if you look at his numbers.
Chapter 7: How do injuries affect the Cubs' chances this season?
We feel like he fits with our defense and the way we pitch. And so, yes, hopefully he can help stabilize our rotation. There's no question. But it wasn't just a move that we made because we had a couple injuries. This is something we've been talking about for a bit. And with the timing of our injuries, it made sense to pull a trigger.
What can you share with us about the latest on Ben Brown and Edward Cabrera and then with some of the other guys that are dealing with injuries like Jamison Tyne?
Yeah, so with Ben to go first, he has a stress reaction in his neck, sort of a similar injury to 2024. We're going to get second opinions on this. We don't know exactly what we're dealing with, but there's going to be a period of pretty significant rest, no matter what the second opinion shows.
Chapter 8: What lessons has Jed Hoyer learned from last year's trade deadline?
So we're going to be out without Ben for a bit. With Edward, he had a moderate hamstring strain earlier. He got an injection in that, and he's going to start working his way back. But he's also going to be out for some time. Jameson has been throwing. He threw an up-down bullpen the other day. He'll continue to progress, and we're hopeful that progression continues.
And obviously it's nice to get a guy back tonight, which is nice. I feel like Matt's only made five starts this year. He was so key for us last year, and it's nice to see him out there tonight.
realistically what can you do while those guys are out to stabilize the rotation and give yourself a chance to do the things you want to do this season well we were able to get peterson that certainly helps but um you know we have about five weeks till the deadline and um
Right now, the second wild card in the American League is two games under .500. So not many teams feel like they're out of the race. There's not many pitchers available. So right now, I think we need to figure this thing out internally. Guys need to step up and pitch well. We need to play great defense and win some games. And there will be a point that's more transactional.
But in the meantime, this is our group.
When we talk to Craig, it's always about winning that day, and you can understand why. You have to look at the big picture. What changes now for you when you look at the big picture because of everything that's transpired?
Well, I think the degree of difficulty is a little harder, but I think Craig's right. You have to win with what you have that day. We did a great job of that these last three days. It feels like we played three games and
kind of rapid succession and won all of them and you just have to yeah you have to play that day you know candidly in the middle of april we had all of our relievers hurt i was concerned about the run we're going to go on and we went up winning 10 in a row so this is a funny sport that way um i didn't expect to win 10 in a row with without any healthy relievers at that point so um you never know what's going to happen in baseball you got to focus on that night's game um
And then, you know, go from there. But certainly, you know, Craig and everyone, they've been earning their money going through the pitching possibilities for the next week. And the doubleheader didn't help things. So this is a challenging week, but we're going to get through it.
