Who is Josh Nelson and what does the Sox Machine podcast cover?
This hour is brought to you by Menards. Save big money at Menards. Menards. Menards? Menards.
Socks machine.
You know that music? Machine! Wait, where's the Jason Benetti We Want Machine? Does that get into too much of a s of a similar open? The point is, Josh Nelson is here and we are excited to see him. Joining us in studio is Josh Nelson. He is the host of the Sox Machine podcast. It is now part of the Foul Territory Network. AJ Pierzinski and them just scooped y'all up, didn't he?
They did. Yeah, it was a great offer. Uh fantastic so far experience. Jim Marglas was just with uh Foul Territory this afternoon, so you guys can check that on the YouTube channel. Everybody wants to talk about the Chicago White Sox. How fun this is. The bandwagon.
How different this is.
Bears training camp comes along and we're worried that everyone's gonna check out. And here we are talking about two playoff teams in the Crosstown Classic this week.
How did the White Sox sweep the Tigers and what does it mean for the team?
I mean that's it. We were talking about this. I think it's the question of the week is how the when was the last time this late in the season? 'Cause we talked about June in two thousand eight. This late in the season that both the Cubs and the Sox have very meaningful crosstown series meeting up with each other.
Yeah, it's been a very, very long time. This could be a first for them being playing in August. I I kind of went on my soapbox and on our show today. And I feel like the buzz of this series for this second part is not as much so much happened this weekend in Chicago, right? Right. The Aaron Water show, Bears kick off their preseason. Cubs and Cardinals, and then everyone's like, oh yeah, it's the Cubs and White Sox. I feel like this series should always be on the weekend moving forward. But it's still pretty critical for both teams because the White Sox have an opportunity to continue for all the doubters to prove them wrong, that they are not going to fade. And for the Cubs, they really need to a get right series, especially on the pitching front.
They really got beat up by St. Louis. this weekend.
Yeah, I think I think you're right. And for the Cubs specifically, they've got a big road trip after this. And if they can't kind of write the ship There could be trouble lying ahead for two teams that they face on the road that are fighting for playoff spots in Seattle and Arizona, but this series specifically, first thing I'm looking at is those probables and uh trying to figure out who's doing what for the White Sox.
Shruggy. Uh you know who also's doing that is Will Venable. Yeah, this is going to be interesting. And I think this is a good postseason test for the Chicago White Sox because you're one of two types of teams when you do reach the postseason. You're either a team that you are confident in your starting pitching and you really lean on them. We saw this with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, that they knew that their strength was with the starting pitching, so they really leaned on them. There are times, though, as a team that you can be successful, understanding that we just Don't have the starting pitching depth, so we really need to lean on the bullpen. This is going to be a test for the White Sox bullpen, especially Sean Newcomb and Grant Taylor, who this past weekend pitched multiple innings to help close out wins for the White Sox.
What can Jordan Hicks provide to the White Sox? Hagan Smith will be tested in this series. He's yet to allow a hit or a run in his four and two-thirds innings starting his career. It is seven strikeouts. But this bullpen is going to be tested, and I think this is where the White Sox as a franchise can learn just how playoff tested they are, especially when it comes to the bullpen.
Well, Hagen Smith yesterday, let's stay on him for a second. Record one and two Thursday records those those five outs. You're right. Effectively wild. What do you think about him? What do you think about his delivery, which has received some some criticism and what where does it stop with Hagen Smith? Because you were the one that told us the last time you were in here that they were working out Hagen Smith and Tanner McDougal as relievers in down in the minors and now
