Chapter 1: What prompted Matthew Boyd to join the Cubs before the WBC?
Rahimi Harrison-Grody. Could you imagine Lovey Smith doing the whole good, better, best thing and saying bleep the Packers? Come on, guys. Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Never let it rest. I'll see you on Tuesday. Middays 10 to 2 on 104.3 The Score. That's how he became a left-handed pitcher. Shot to right at Judge. A 1-2-3-7 for Boyd after the long six. Then we stretch.
This is Rahimi Harrison-Grody on 104.3 The Score. That is courtesy of Fox Sports. Matthew Boyd getting himself out of a jam in that seventh inning before he headed on back home, back to Arizona, so he can get his timing right for the opening day starter job, which he was named last week. This is Rahimi Harrison-Grody on 104.3 The Score. Mark Grody, Marshall Harris, and Layla Rahimi with you.
Yep, yep. And that's part of the deal is we understand that for some people involved, especially pitchers, when it comes to the World Baseball Classic, like Matthew Boyd, for example, Tarek Skubal, another one, you've got responsibilities to your home team. And so Matthew Boyd, with the earning of the honor of opening day starter, is now back as part of the understanding.
I love it because even though I thought that the starting pitcher on opening day would be different, I wanted Cade Horton. I understand why he's the guy.
Chapter 2: How did Matthew Boyd perform in the World Baseball Classic?
My question is... If he's the opening day starter, do you think the Cubs look at him as their ace? Because I don't see him as the ace. I don't think they want him to end up being their ace. I think in theory, they probably look at it as Kate Horton, right? That's the guy that they feel like will be the ace. But who knows? I mean, just because Matthew Boyd kind of fizzled out at the end.
Also ran out of gas. Also ran out of gas. And I'm guilty of it, too. The guy was... awesome last year. He is 35. They pitched a lot of innings last year, but it's not inconceivable that the guy could be great again this year.
Chapter 3: What does being named opening day starter mean for Matthew Boyd?
We touched on this a little bit while you were broadcasting the state championship games, Marshall, but you hadn't gotten to give your opinion about it. We talked about who would be the one through five in the starting rotation. We'll worry about Justin Steele when he's available, but in the meantime, I think for us, the distinction became Edward Cabrera and also Cade Horton.
How do you stack those behind Matthew Boyd? But I feel like it is a ceremonial honor. Them giving Matthew Boyd the opening day nod was a respect to his service last year. Like the fact that he was an all-star, he had his best year as a Major League Baseball starting pitcher. Okay, I could see that.
One of the reasons why I thought he would be the second starter is to go righty-lefty-righty off the gate as opposed to going lefty-righty-righty out of the gate. We kind of just did it as who your top five guys are. So who did you come up with? How did you order it? I think I went Caleb Horton as number one. Kate Horton, Caleb Williams. Yeah, Caleb Williams, Kate Horton. Football brain.
Chapter 4: Why is there debate about Matthew Boyd being the Cubs' ace?
Did I say that? Did I just say that? Wow. But it's okay. It's live radio and football brain is still a thing. Kobe White, Kobe Bryant. Don't do that. You're going to mess me up with that. You're going to mess me up with that. So I would go Cade Horton. I would go Edward Cabrera. I would go Matthew Boyd. I would go Jameson Tyone. I would go Shota Imanaga. Yeah, I think that's... Does that work?
And then Justin steals, of course, the wild card. Also, guys... Tyone has given up two home runs in every one of his spring training appearances. Do you remember the first half from last year? Like, your regular season first half? Home run, home run, home run. It's like he had a home run baton. We were at Wrigley'sville Dogs, and we were talking about the home run propensity.
The sign says Wrigley'sville. Oh, he does? Yes. We went outside and looked.
Chapter 5: What factors influenced the Cubs' starting rotation decisions?
Wrigleyville dogs, the S is silent. So he had a home run baton, which at the All-Star break, he passed off to one Shota Imanaga. Is that not how it played out? Because he stopped giving up home runs and Shota Imanaga said, I will pick up your burden of giving up a whole bunch of home runs. Usually you want the offensive player to get that home run baton, but you know, I can't make the rules.
I got good news for you guys, though. What you got? Jameson Tyone got it out of his system yesterday. Oh, is that the belief? That's the belief. The fifth time's a charm. He gave up 10 earned runs, two home runs, including two local guy, Jack Sawinski, who hit a three-run homer. But yeah, he looked awful yesterday, Tyone. I mean, there's like a legit 10 earned runs.
I wasn't concerned until we started adding them up, and I was like, oh. That's every single one of the spring training appearances. And that's when I started to get concerned when it came to giving up the home runs. In the meantime, Matthew Boyd was on because he got back from the World Baseball Classic.
He came in to figure out how his setup was going to be with the Cubs before he was going to be the opening day starter. And then he talked to inside the clubhouse as the dad who steps up. You know, there's only so many days in the calendar, right? And I wanted to say with Team USA, there wasn't any innings left when it came down to it.
You know, they got schemes going tomorrow, and they got a plan for the championship game with Nolan, and they got Joe Ryan available too, and they got a stable of just dude relievers, guy after guy that's just, you know,
firemen and closers that are just um top of the game right and uh they're just basically it came down to being ready um for you know what what do we need to get ready for the beginning of the season and how um you know i haven't haven't thrown into the fourth inning yet so if i if i delayed that any longer you know especially with no guaranteed innings it would be
starting to just put that commitment with the Cubs, you know, in jeopardy. Right. And that was never my goal. That was never my, you know, I just thought something I didn't want to do from the jump. And when the situation shook out, it just, it was a hard decision because I love those guys in that, in that USA clubhouse and to wear that uniform.
And we want nothing more than to bring the gold home for the, for the United States. But I also love the guys in this clubhouse and I love this organization that, you know, takes care of me, and, you know, being a Cub is just amazing. So, you know, we made that decision, and, you know, I feel like it's the right decision.
And pulling for those guys, you know, pulled for them last night, going to be pulling for them tomorrow. But, man, I'm happy to be back on the pinstripes, and I just love this group that we have here, and we're going to do something really special this year. Aww. That's why he's the father who stepped up. It's a perfect answer, really. Answers like that. It always is. Yeah.
