Ladies and gentlemen, joining us now is a man who's got a massive brain.
Mike Florio.
He used to be a lawyer, then he decided to take his talents to the internet.
NBC Sports. I'm sorry I'm late. I was talking to Robert Kraft. That isn't the time for an airing of grievances. Pro Football Talk. I got a lot of problems with you people.
No, you're going to hear about it. On Chicago Sports Radio, 104.3 The Score.
I want to keep talking Legos.
Mike Florio is kind enough to move his weekly visit to this Friday at 1 o'clock because we had a very short show at the Cubs doubleheader on Wednesday. He's the creator and editor-in-chief of Pro Football Talk. He's at Pro Football Talk on X. And he now joins us on our hotline and on Twitch, twitch.tv slash thescorechicago. Mike, how are you today?
They still play doubleheaders?

Chapter 2: What recent felony charges are affecting the NFL?
He is part of the call of Cubs and Brewers tonight on Apple TV. Ryan, thanks for joining us.
Yeah, apologies. So I travel a lot. I'm usually in God's time on Mountain Time Zone. I'm in Milwaukee today.
Chapter 3: How did the investigation into Terrion Arnold unfold?
And for some reason, I thought I was on East Coast time. And so it gives you a good idea. I might be good at baseball analysis, but I'm God awful at geography and time. So apologies. I was an hour late.
Baseball players never know what time it is. That's like one of the first things I learned. Time or day. Those are the two things that they always get thrown off by.
Yeah, well, that's exactly right. I mean, we're such creatures of habit. We just kind of, you know, we show up in a new city and we have, you know, like our phones, hopefully they adjust to the right time zone. But, you know, in your mind, you have, you know, when I, this happened to me last week, I had another phone call that I had to make. And when I scheduled it, I was on Kansas City time.
So I was like, yeah, 10 o'clock, no problem. So then when I flew back to Denver, the 10 o'clock was really 9 o'clock.
Chapter 4: What is the significance of the Lions' cornerback's legal troubles?
But in my mind, I knew it was at 10. So, yeah, so this happens quite a few times to us baseball players.
Well, Ryan, one of the things you are good at is foreseeing things because you told us about this time last year thatā that Pete Crow Armstrong was probably going to fall off, and there was going to be not as much production as a guy who was at one point on pace to have, what, a 40-40 season, if not a 50-50 season. What did you see then, and do you foresee something similar happening in 2026?
So one of the trends with PCA was he swung at more pitches and chased more pitches than anybody in baseball. It was him and Michael Harris. And when you have that combination, if the ball looks big to you, your timing's good, you're going to rake. If you lose timing or if pitchers start expanding the strike zone, you crater, and you crater quickly.
Now, this year, you know, I happened to see PCA ā quite a few times in the last couple weeks when he got locked in. And what I see now is, you know, ever since he lowered his hands, and if you see he's kind of been resting the bat on his shoulder, he's a lot more calm. So you can see that, like, the demeanor.
Because any time when you're in the big leagues or at any stage, you've got to picture, like, getting into the batter's box is the equivalent of a field goal kicker with everybody's eyes on that field goal kicker to kick it, or a golfer getting ready to tee off with his driver in front of the gallery.
So that's the feel you get every time you go up into the plate is all eyes on you, and you have this moment. And guys that are really good at it, they're calm. It's a moment, but there's a sense of calm. They're breathing.
And you can tell, like, when the game speeds up, bases loaded, two outs, late in the game, you can tell from the mannerism, body language of a player if they're calm or if they're geared up. You don't want to be geared up. You want to be in that happy place of aggression but calm. And what I'm seeing now from PCA is that there's a calm about him. I think he understands...
if the game doesn't allow him to have a pitch, he doesn't have to swing. He can pass the baton to the next hitter. And that's what I've seen in the last couple of weeks. Now, the problem that you've had with this Cubs offense is that you've had multiple guys that are struggling. Like, I've never seen Dansby struggle this bad. I've never seen Alex Bregman struggle this bad.
I've never seen Nico Horner looking lost at the plate. Like, I just haven't seen that before. And of course, you had Seiya dealing with the arm issue. So you had multiple guys in the lineup where the main focus is gonna be PCA. And, you know, PCA can carry the team. But if he gets pitched to properly, like if I was pitching to PCA, he might see one strike.

Chapter 5: What updates are there on the NFL's disciplinary actions?
This has been a day fraught with technical difficulties, I feel like. Thanks for hanging with us, Ryan.
Yeah, Ryan. Yeah, no problem. Sorry.
Chapter 6: What is the status of Brandon Sorsby's football career?
It looks like one of my computers just decided to quit.
I really hated the discussion about hitting.
I wanted to make sure. Yeah, well, I mean, some people love it. Other people hate it. Apparently my device is like, stop talking, hitting. Yeah.
Ryan Spielberg is the former Rockies outfielder, now a Rockies TV analyst, and he will be on the call of the Cubs Brewers tonight on Apple TV. I need, because you're good at foreseeing things, show me the road to the Cubs winning the National League Central because right now it's hard to see a road where they make it there given their pitching situation.
Yeah, you bring up a good point. One of the challenges that the Cubs have, and I've criticized it. It's not being like criticizing the Cubs to criticize them just because I'm anti-Cubs. I'm not. But one of the things that stands out is, first off, the injuries to the starting rotation is real. Losing Kate Horton, that stinks. Losing Justin Steele in the setback there.
It was great to see Matthew Boyd back yesterday. But overall, this is not a swing and miss pitching staff. There's just not a lot of strikeouts. Even the bullpen doesn't have a lot of strikeouts. And part of that's by design because the Cubs have an elite defensive group. But the problem that you have is you need punch. You need to have some swing and miss.
And that's one of the things that I think Jed Hoyer is probably looking at right now, how do I add some pitching depth, whether it's a starter or whether it's some bullpen arms, but looking for the punch. Ideally, you're looking for somebody that has strikeouts per nine over nine, so you're a bit higher than the league average with a low walk rate.
Those guys aren't... They don't just hand those out to you. There's a cost to it. Now, there's... there's teams out there that are starting to fall apart, right? Like you can see this with Boston, you can see it with, you know, Colorado's, you know, not a, team by a win-loss record. So there are arms, bullpen arms. You can look at the Angels.
You can look at the Minnesota Twins and start figuring out of those teams, are there players that you like? That's going to be the big challenge for Chicago. If they're going to end up pushing forward, I think it's going to be a little bit more
