My name is Tess Palomo. And my name is Claire Donald. Today we had to do Hilary Duff. Well, let's just put it out there. You know, there's not really much of an intro. Rather, to say I know that everyone has wanted Hilary for a long time. I have wanted Hilary for a long time. And we thought it'd be fun for Women's History to talk about a childhood icon. Of course.
Someone that a lot of us grew up with. I guess for me, I always associate you with your Disney Channel journey with Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus more. Well, of course. And I loved Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus. But... Well, actually, Boy Meets World was the first Disney Channel show I ever watched. And that also gave me jumping beeping very early in my life. One of the first shows.
I remember I was in a hotel room. I was like, what is this feeling? You just were like these three boys that are on my screen all the time. And I think Topanga and Corey were making out. And I was like, whoa. This is a lot of people's first jumping beeping. If you guys don't know what jumping beeping is, you got to do the work and listen to our other episodes. Because we'll explain it.
I think you can assume what it is. Yeah, but to sum it up, being turned on, as a kid. So anyways, but Lizzie McGuire was like my second like real Disney Channel show, long story long. I loved Hilary Duff. I saw her in concert. I had her Walmart line skirt and shirt. Skirt and shirt? Skirt and shirt. So girl in a skirt and shirt. We'll talk about that later too. We're going to talk about it all.
We're going to talk about her music, her movies, her dating life. I can't wait.

Chapter 2: How did Hilary Duff become a Disney Channel star?
The drums, the controversy. But first before we get started, we're going to... We're going to go back in time for a second. We're going to paint a scene. Let's go back, back to the beginning. If you will. I will. So Claire, the year is 2003. Your mom just picked you up from school and casually drops the news that you can go to Barnes & Noble and finally buy your Metamorphosis CD.
You've been waiting for this day for months. You run into the store, past the Brittneys, the Christinas, the Mandys, a blur of pop princesses. And then you see her. The cover. Hilary Duff. Blonde hair, perfectly messy, a soft but confident stare. She looks like someone older than you, cooler than you, but not unreachable. When you crack the CD open, the plastic hinge squeaks.
Inside the lyric booklet, glossy and pastel, filled with tiny photos of her smiling, mid-laugh, mid-becoming. You rush home and play it on your computer, a thrilling new development since stereos are officially so yesterday. The songs pour out, turning 16, finding your inner strength, a kitschy song about math that somehow makes you feel triggered.
You dance in your room alone, catching your reflection in the mirror. You are 13 and you want to be just like her. You don't know it yet, but this is the beginning of growing up alongside someone who always felt just a few steps ahead and letting you follow along. This is Hilary Duff. I am not okay. That was so stunning. Thank you so much.

But to me, she didn't feel like a Britney – of course, iconic, loved Britney. But she didn't feel like someone so far away. Like she felt like someone –
that's just your best friend totally that's why i still like her like i've always followed her fashion and her makeup tips and she likes martinis and we're going to talk about later like some of her traits with relationships like i just feel like we're very connected i can't wait so we love our girl okay so claire let's get into her childhood and her backstory Hillary Earhard Duff. So she talks about her Libra tendencies a lot, and she's very much like, I am 100% a Libra. I am super balanced. I want to see justice in things. Well, we love our Texas pop stars.
We've covered so many of them. Her dad, Bob, co-owned some... convenience stores, like, a chain of them. And her mom, Susan, was a housewife turned OG momager before Kris Jenner even claimed it. Oh, wow. Do you remember, like, seeing Susan Duff in, like, the tabloids with her? Like, she was very present in her early career.
Not really, but, like, I feel like every child star at this point, their parents were their managers. 100%, and I will say for Susan, that woman kept Hillary so grounded and kind and...
like appreciative of what she's had like she did a very good job and she even says like a lot of that had to do with my mom and like justice for Susan because she is still very like normal and has not I mean of course she's gone through shit but like She's one of the few child stars that we can still look at today and be like, you made it. A hundred percent.
And, like, has never really had an era, which it's, like, none of those girls' faults who had eras where it was a little wild. But, like, she really has not. No. She had, like, a couple, but they were kind of subdued in a way and maybe talked about in a different way because of, like, how people placed her, which we will talk about.
And she has her older sister, Haley, who is two and a half years older than her. Mm-hmm. The Hayley Duff of it all. The Hayley Duff of it all. So Hayley was very protective of Hillary. She was like, you are my little sister. She's like two years older than her. Two and a half. Yeah. So Hayley was the one that was doing plays. She took acting lessons. She took dancing lessons.
And there was this acting workshop that was not far away from their house. And Hayley was like, this is my dream. Like, I want to be an actress. I want to be a singer. You guys. No, I know. There is something heartbreaking about this whole story. But, like, okay, listen. I don't know where Hayley Duff is in this... Who Hayley Duff is in this world now and, like, what her politics are or whatever.
But I will say I have always felt for her because... I mean, we can leave it at that. I have felt for her, too. I mean, like, this definitely wasn't an easy situation or career for her to be living in the shadows to bring it back to sisters of someone else's dream.

Chapter 4: What controversies surrounded Hilary Duff in the early 2000s?
Exactly. At least Ashley Simpson could, like, carve her own name out, but Hayley Duff never really could. Well, she tried to, and then Paris Hilton got in the way. We will talk about it. Oh, my God. Mm-hmm. So Hillary's actually more of a tomboy grown-up. She likes playing sports. She's like, eh. My sister Haley's off doing acting lessons like that's not really for me.

So she joined the acting classes and Susan was like, hmm. She's like, I'm noticing that both of the girls are in classes. And she's like, but what I'm really noticing is that Hillary is gaining so much confidence. And like from taking these classes, she is more social. She's like a little bit more present. She's like, I think this is really good for her. And you know what?
Both my girls are going to be stars. Wow. She saw, you know. The impact of Susan. The impact of Susan. And then Bob Duff also spotted an opportunity. So there was this Angelina Jolie movie that was filming. It was like this very indie early 2000s movie that they came to Texas and they were location scouting. And they saw their – they had, like, a ranch in Houston.
And they saw this, and they were like, well, we want to film a scene here. And Bob was like, okay. He was like, you can film. But Hillary needs to be on set somehow. We want her to be an extra. And they were like, yeah, okay. Not Hayley, though? So I looked at the IMDb, Claire, because I was like, there has to be. Both of them were in this.
the answer was no it was just hillary was was at least she was the only one that is credited on imdb oh my god no wonder this is hayley duff's villain origin story like literally just like looking out the window watching hillary on set like everyone like clapping literally yeah so they filmed there and bob was like okay i'm gonna schmooze a little bit susan's like i'm gonna schmooze and hillary is like i really like being on set she's like this is fun she didn't have any lines or anything but she got to see how the sausage was made right and she liked it
But what do you think the girls felt about staying in Texas? Where do you think they had to go? Well, Hollywood, of course. Hollywood was calling. They were like, anywhere but here. If you know, you know. So they go to L.A. And Susan apparently pays scammers thousands of dollars to get them auditions and meetings. I mean, I almost fell for that in 2014.

Chapter 5: How did public perceptions affect Hilary's relationships?
Thank you, Cindy, to my mother for allowing us to do this, like to these huge like conference things where all these agents would come. Like it was like a week long thing. And it is essentially a big scam. For sure. Because they're just taking your money. Yeah. It's a little tough. But we have all learned our lesson. Yeah.
I think I went to something that I paid for once and I was like, oh, no, this isn't. No. This is not it. Yeah. It's not a great situation at first because they're so green. They don't really know what they're doing. Susan ends up losing a lot of money. Nothing was set up. There's no auditions. There was no managers waiting for them. But they're still like, OK, let's start renting.
Let's rent like six months at an L.A. place. Susan's like, I'll start homeschooling you guys. Like, let's actually take this like let's we're going to be here for a little bit. Did they say Oakwood? Yes. Did they really? Yes, they did. Oh, my God. They are so Oakwood to me. They stayed at Oakwood, and she was with Penn Badgley. Hilary Duff grew up with Penn Badgley in Oakwood.
If y'all don't know, Oakwood are these apartments in the valley, and it's very haunting. It's where all these child stars and their families come and live, and it's pre-furnished apartments. Yes. Yes. Wow. So she's an Oakwood kid. Okay. And you know that she lives in the Valley now. She does live in the Valley now. I think she's like comforted by the Valley. Yeah.
And I think a lot of young childhood stars are because I think they were there. They grew up there. Exactly. So Hillary was doing fine. She booked some commercials. But the biggest thing is that she booked a made for TV movie, Casper Meets Wendy. And that was her first onscreen movie.

Chapter 6: What challenges did Hilary face as a child star?
That was made for TV? It was made for TV, which I didn't know because I always used to watch that. On VHS. Yes. Definitely the same. No, because it wasn't on the Disney Channel. No. I don't know. I don't think so. No. But even bigger than that, I think with the movie, she's like, oh, this is fine.
But she was really excited because she had just booked a pilot called Daddio on ABC Family where she was the lead kid. She ends up being replaced by twins. By twins? Because they could work more hours. Oh, God. This town is so dark. It's... Literally, they're like, ah, sure, we can get them for 12 hours without many breaks. That's so crazy. Put the twins in there. Oh, that's heartbreaking.
Well, she said that she was so... She already told all of her friends about this. She was so embarrassed and discouraged. And in a recent interview, she was like, I, like many child actors, are like dogs. Like, they were just like, we want to please... We want like instant gratification. We will do anything, any tricks, anything you ask to be able to like perform.
And she's like, this was mortifying. And she was also like, when you're fired at 10 years old, that does something to you. It's just like showbiz is no place for kids. Like when you're working at 10 years old, like it's just a crazy mentality. Yeah. So Haley's like, well, I'm fine. Like I'm booking. I think she was booking some like commercials and doing okay. I forgot. I forgot.
Forgot Haley was here. No, Haley is still there. But Hillary is like, I hate this town. I'm so embarrassed. I'm just going to go back to Texas. I want to be with my friends. I want to be back at school. She kind of was feeling homesick. She must have been so lonely. So lonely. So she goes back to Texas and stays with her dad. But then Susan stays out in L.A. with Haley.

Chapter 7: How did Hilary transition from acting to music?
So they separate for a little bit. But she had auditioned for this role called Lizzie McGuire. Oh, yeah. And as she's like, she literally just gets back to Texas and then they call her and they're like, we want you for Lizzie McGuire. That's crazy. But she was like, I'll believe it when I see it. And they were like, we still need to film the pilot and we still need to get picked up.
But like, we want you. You did a great job. Apparently her first audition sucked because she was like. She said she'd been hanging out with friends the night before and like didn't look over her lines. And then they were like, you know, you didn't do a good job, but you'll come back tomorrow and you'll do a good job. And like, we do want you for this part. So you better show up. Oh my God.
Well, thank God she got that second opportunity. I mean, truly. Remember pilot season? Like it does not exist anymore. It is of a different time. It's such a different time. Like in LA in January, everyone would fly in from all over the country to audition for all the new TV show pilots. It's a different time. The city's different now, isn't it? It sure is, Jess. Hollywood has changed.
And we have cigarettes and sunglasses. It sure is. And we're just trying to adjust to it as we can. So this, of course, really starts the Lizzie McGuire mania and the Hilary Duff mania from really an early age. If you guys don't know Lizzie McGuire... Gen Z probably didn't watch it, or maybe they've watched it ironically now. So is it available on Disney Plus? It is.
I've got to go back and watch. Donna, Molly, and I watched it recently, and we watched a couple episodes, and it's actually really well written. It's fun. It's quirky. The actors are all really good. The synopsis is, Lizzie McGuire, a clumsy middle schooler, navigates through teenage issues while enjoying her tween years with genuine friends, an annoying younger brother, and loving parents.
It's like a coming of age. It's dealing with everything that young girls related to, like not being in the popular crowd, buying your first bra, being embarrassed around your crush, not wanting to hang with your parents, all of the things. Being an outfit repeater. Being an outfit repeater. Also, those jeans will live forever in my mind that have like the jewels on them, the famous jeans.
I know exactly what you're talking about. All of her hair, like accessories, her headbands, her clips. Remember the orange bouncing balls? Oh my God, what's the theme song? What is the theme song?

Chapter 8: What is Hilary Duff's current perspective on fame and motherhood?
I can like... Each figure it out on the way. That's the end of it, right? I don't remember the theme song, like, at all. Oh, my God. Oh, but I loved it. I remember having a vivid dream about Aaron Carter after watching that and being a little bit like, and I remember my mom was like saying goodnight to me the next day. I remember this so well. And she was like, okay, like have sweet dreams. And I said, I'm so excited to dream. She was probably like, okay, you creep.
Shut the door. Shut the door. Turn out the lights. Thank you. But I was like that man. May he rest in peace. Well, I remember our whole school was talking about like Aaron Carter is going to be on Lizzie McGuire. I miss you. No, I know. It was like one of those shows that you just cannot wait to go home and watch. It was like that. Even Stevens for me. Oh, well, even Stevens was huge.

Guys, this was in like 2001.
This is, again, everyone sitting down at the same time to watch the show. Yes. And she made $15,000 an episode. Okay. Okay.
