Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Breakfast with Gary and Tim.
It's a busy day. Um, we got the rabbit hole podcast coming up after this and Joe Watson's going to join us on that. Talk about, uh, well, the landscape, but also what it's like, uh, in out there in the coaching market and the job that he did. around the Melbourne Footy Club. He was an integral part of the appointment of Stephen King.
So nothing surprises us in footy these days, and I don't reckon it'll surprise our next guest either. He's been in the cut and thrust of it for long enough now. Adam Kingsley, the coach of the Giants, joins us. Welcome, Kingers.
Chapter 2: What insights does Adam Kingsley share about the coaching market?
Morning, gentlemen. Busy day. No great surprise. It's just the cycle of life in the footy world for coaches.
Yeah, unfortunately it is. I just caught up with the news, yeah, so it's not good.
You know what the three certainties in life are, don't you, Kingers? What are they? Death taxes, and if you coach, you get the sack eventually. You need to remember that. Speaking from experience, Tim.
Not if you keep delivering 14-goal third quarters. I know there's so much more to your season to date and what you hope to achieve going forward, but yesterday and today, it's the talking point. Everyone I talk to want to know what you said to them at halftime. You can bottle that up and away you go.
Yeah, not much. Maybe that was the answer. Don't talk to them. We just watched a couple of clips of doing some good stuff. You know, how we wanted to play against the Lions and then the boys went out and certainly delivered on that.

Chapter 3: How does Adam Kingsley describe his coaching philosophy?
They did. They delivered in spades. Do you still record what you say at halftime to the players or not? I know some clubs do that. Do you at Giants or not? No.
No, no, no. We don't record it. Yeah, I typically come in with a plan and, yeah, we execute the plan based on how the game's going or not. That might change, but for the most part, it looks pretty similar week on week.
What was the fundamentals? I mean, we talk about Brisbane all the time and the basic premise is take away their uncontested ball and want to use it by foot. What was your plan going in?
Yeah, well, that's it, isn't it? If you allow them to control the ball, then they'll generate a lot of territory and they're very, very hard to defend and they're hard to beat. So I think the plan is kind of out there. It's one thing knowing it. It's another thing doing it. You know, we've been able to do it
um often against the lions which is pleasing um you know we feel like we um we play well against them for the most part and um you know maybe that plays into our psyche of our players that are up for the game um we need to be able to deliver that week on week now how have you handled jake stringer um well i mean he doesn't need too much handling he's an experienced player and he's
He's certainly got a want to be a great teammate and to deliver on how we want him to play, the role that we ask him to play. I'd say this year has been very effective in that. The fact that he's hitting the scoreboard as well is a bonus. And he did that last year too for us in the games that he did play where he was on with the sub or starting the game.
So I've been really pleased with how he's had an impact on the group.
I ask that question because at Essendon, the concern that they had, and even when he left, it was about he can never get himself fit, he never looks right, but in the time that he's been up there with you, he's looked showroom. He looks like he should look like.
Yeah, he's fit. He's in great shape. I don't know if that's just a change of the club, change of environment, a different stimulus, a new opportunity. Maybe he's late and he figures it's his last opportunity and needs to needs to capitalise on.

Chapter 4: What was the halftime strategy that led to success against the Lions?
He has this appetite to learn and grow. You know, the moment he stepped in, he was, you know, how do we do things? How can I improve? You know, his attitude is first class and it's very much appreciated by his teammates.
And what about Cogs? Is he at least alive? Has he got his body right? He just looked at me on top of the ground?
Yeah, Cogs had his best pre-season he's had since 2023. Obviously he's compromised the last two years with a knee and a glute and a face and a shoulder and just everything that could go wrong went wrong for him. So his pre-season was really strong. We've settled him in as an inside mid the last fortnight, and that sort of, I think, has helped him.
But he just has this fierce attack and feet that allow him to impact. You know, he's got his speed back. He's got that desperation that we see in it. You know, he laid that massive tackle. I think it was on Darcy Fort in the centre bounce, and, you know, that's inspiring to his teammates, and that's the type of player that he is, has been, and hopefully continues to be.
Is the timing of this game in Alice Springs, is it good for you or do you think it presents challenges that you'd rather not be confronted with at this stage?
No, I've got no issues with travelling to Alice Springs to play. We've done that three years ago, I think it was, and had a really good result. Enjoyed ourselves playing in front of it. It's a big footy town and so the turnout is always great, both at captain's run and at the game. So, yeah, we're looking forward to getting over there. It's, you know, we've got the bye following that game.
So, you know, we'll be able to, on the way back, rest up and recover for a fortnight's game against St Kilda. But looking forward to it.
I would join Adam Kingsley, coach of the Giants. I don't know whether you caught up with this or not, but we had Tom Green on our program last week. We asked him a question about Toby, whether or not he's going to stay there at the Giants or what he might want to do. He said, well, I'll be catching up with him during the break. I'm going to have a chat with him.
Are you going to catch up with him during the break and have a chat with him? A three-way chat between them?

Chapter 5: How does Adam handle experienced players like Jake Stringer?
Yeah, that's a little less, you know, there's no damage there. It's just a bit of tendonitis type of injury. And it just sort of flared up at training on Friday. So there's every chance that he could come back into the team this week. But we'll see how he trains and pulls up from training throughout the week.
One final one from me. Toby to Cozzy.
Toby Bedford. Yes. Oh, it's a strong chance, I would suspect.
You get into the Alice, a little bit of sightseeing, King is?
No, we'll be there for captain's run. We'll go early and captain's run, but normal game day prep, normal pre-game prep and pretty quiet, lay pretty low and get the game done and then... Into our bye.
A little two-hour bicep curl session just before the game.
Kept myself busy somehow.
I know you spoke about Neil last night on 360, but at Essendon when you were there for that time, did your paths cross there?
Briefly, yeah, he was there for probably six months. I was an 18-year-old. Yeah, that was my first six months in there. And then he, I don't know what happened, but he left. Yeah, so that very briefly. But I did cross paths with him in the level four. He was an outstanding person. A lot of great advice given to me at that point in time. This is 10 years ago, 11 years ago, I think it was.
