Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

2.461 - 21.211 Kane Cornes

Yep, we've got a big one coming up for you. Stick around for a busy last hour. Tom Morris, I'm sure, is in the building standing by to join us live in the studio for his thoughts, all the news, as well as the agenda and your feedback to finish the program. But right now, the Melbourne Football Club, while on the ladder, they are equal fourth.

21.271 - 40.893 Kane Cornes

They're officially seventh on percentage, but at six and three with some big wins, they've been the surprise packet of the year. There's no doubt about that. Their new coach joins us. For Powerbay, Powerbay delivers eco-friendly heat pump solar systems and batteries to cut energy costs and support sustainability. Stephen King, Kingy, thanks for your time. Kingy.

40.913 - 59.528 Kane Cornes

Kano, Kingy, thanks for having me, guys. Pleasure, and thank you for joining us. Did you ever reflect on the sort of the sliding doors moment that you went for the Eagles job, you fell a bit unwell and couldn't get there, and they went in a different direction, and now you've landed, it seems, exactly where you should. Yeah, I'll not really reflect.

I think every experience you have in footy prepares you for the next opportunity. And I just feel like I'm exactly where I'm meant to be at the moment and enjoying this role, mate. It's been a great start. I get to coach a great group of players and work with a really good, positive group of people. So just enjoying the journey at the moment.

78.23 - 90.922 Kane Cornes

Any coaches that want to get a senior gig, what advice would you give them in the selection phase? What was important to you and what made your presentation as compelling as it was?

90.942 - 106.296 Steven King

I think for me, Cain, it was more just time in the game, experiencing different organisations, coaches that I've coached under and with. In that moment, I just felt like when the Melbourne job popped up,

106.765 - 126.175 Steven King

just try to be true to myself and authentic and, and almost remove the pressure of failure and just, if, you know, if myself and my values and the way I see the game aligns with the Melbourne Footy Club, then so be it. But if not, you know, I'll just continue on with my journey. But, um, that certainly helped in the preparation phase and, and the actual interview process. But, um,

126.745 - 136.896 Steven King

I just think the way I see the game and the way I want it played and the way I want my environment, it probably married up exactly where Melbourne were at, which is great for me and good for the footy club.

136.916 - 151.791 Kane Cornes

I promise you we'll get to the footy shortly, but a part of those experiences probably prepared you for having a CEO, then not having a CEO, then having an interim, then the interim going away and another interim stepping in and a new one that you've got to form a relationship with. How challenging has that been for you?

Chapter 2: What sliding doors moments led Steven King to coach Melbourne?

218.765 - 237.074 Steven King

The days you get just to speak about strategy and footy just by itself, they're ones you really cherish because there's so much more that goes to strategically management, dealing with everything that comes across your desk, whereas as an assistant, you pretty much just lock into the game, your area, your group of players.

237.715 - 257.373 Steven King

So yeah, the corporate realities of dealing with corporates and speaking to sponsor engagements, your schedule gets filled up pretty quickly, but I understand the importance of the role I've got to be the face of the club and help sell the message of what we want to do inside the footy club and get our members and sponsors and supporters on board.

0

257.493 - 275.177 Steven King

So, yeah, but I must admit, when I first got the job, I think going for the job is one thing, and then you sit in the seat and you're like, okay, what's... I feel a bit like George Costanza on my first day, sitting there going, okay, I've got this office now, how do I get this ball rolling? So... then the reality hits and you think, okay, how do I actually bring this to life?

0

275.277 - 289.006 Steven King

But luckily enough, mate, as I said before, I've got Troy Chaplin and Nathan Jones and Jared Rivers there. I've got a good coaching group that, you know, it's helped sort of bring this to life. So it's certainly not just one person myself. It's a whole team of people.

289.747 - 314.55 Kingy

As a former ruckman of note, I must say I was hoping you'd go with the two rucks set up. It took you a little while to get there. Can you take us behind the scenes in how you arrived at that decision to play Max Gorn and Max Heath in the, or Tom as we call him, the other Max, in the same team? What was the one thing you were trying to achieve by bringing the dual ruck in?

315.408 - 336.296 Steven King

Well, firstly, Max Heath was knocking the door down at VFL level. So there's an integrity piece where you want to try and reward consistent performances. So he was dominant at VFL level. And then I just think we had Brisbane into a five-day break. We had a couple of breaks where it was like, okay, we've mapped out there's a Richmond game of five days. Then we go up to Sydney.

336.876 - 353.428 Steven King

And so it's almost, do we just rock from the bench and just to relieve Max a bit, have that threat there? And just the way it's sort of gone a little bit and evolved, Gourney's been able to spend a bit of time forward. And with the Majercek injury last week, that was one we had to spend more time forward. Gourney did. And then even yesterday, it was just an opportunity for us.

353.668 - 371.275 Steven King

You know, we lost Turner before the game. Majercek out. We thought, could we get some height in front of the ball to stretch West Coast a little bit and just look at a few different things and see how that evolves a bit. And to Gourney's credit, I mean, he's been really open and transparent with me around, you know, giving... big moose and opportunity.

371.596 - 379.722 Steven King

And part of my role is to obviously win now, but I've got to make sure I get games into some of our younger players to make sure they get some experience as well.

Chapter 3: How does a change in CEO affect a football club's dynamics?

683.755 - 703.953 Kane Cornes

What a game that is going to be. Two of the most watchable teams in the league. Stars everywhere from the Wizard to Pickett. These fans, grab your membership, grab your tickets and get there. I don't know. There should be 65,000, 70,000. Saturday, twilight. It's a great time slot to go and watch the footy. Kingy, good luck. Well done on the start to the season. Appreciate your time.

703.973 - 706.017 Steven King

Appreciate having me. Thanks, guys. Appreciate it.

0

706.132 - 735.421 Kane Cornes

Stephen King, the Melbourne coach. My phone's sort of personally been blowing up just about a few things this morning on Fireball. You got problems? No, no, not at all. We got no problems at all, but I'm just telling you that JK is getting noticed from the level five and a half. Are you going to direct line? Some of the heavy hitters are noticing his great work behind the microphone.

0

735.441 - 738.345 Kane Cornes

Is that right? I think there's big things on the horizon.

0

738.385 - 743.291 Kingy

Well, is there a Friday night footy opportunity?

743.471 - 746.355 Kane Cornes

Yeah, well, there may be some higher opportunities.

746.535 - 749.359 Kingy

I would nearly come out of retirement from Friday night footy.

749.879 - 750.52 Kane Cornes

You, me.

750.6 - 753.604 Kingy

If you and I did a game with Jake, I would do that.
