Chapter 2: What happened at the Geelong oil refinery fire?
And I'm Larissa Huntington. It's Friday the 17th of April. In your quiz today, another hit to our fuel supply, Dan Duggan loses his extradition appeal, Live Golf is up in the air, and a wild wolf chase. This is your quiz today. After burning for around 13 hours, a huge fire at Viva Energy's oil refinery in Geelong was brought under control just after midday yesterday.
But Larissa, the damage was done. With the war in the Middle East already stretching our fuel supplies, Energy Minister Chris Bowen admitted the disruption at one of our two working refineries is not great timing.
And that's because the refinery has been working at full capacity in recent weeks to supply half of Victoria's fuel and 10% of the whole country's. Bowen says that as a result of the fire, petrol production may be impacted for some time.
We'll link to a good explainer about what happened, but to summarise, reports say that workers found a gas leak shortly before the fire broke out at around 11pm on Wednesday night and Thankfully, no one was hurt, but after an early investigation, Fire Rescue Victoria said that the fire was an accident and appears to have been caused by an equipment failure.
Yeah, the refinery's manager, Bill Patterson, called it a failure that they have to thoroughly investigate and learn from. Viva Energy's boss, Scott Wyatt, said that production will only ramp up again when they're confident they can do it safely. And if you're like me, thinking, where does that leave our fuel supply? He seems confident that any shortfalls will be covered by imports.
He says they're quite full for the next couple of months.
Yeah, so we're set to be even more reliant on imported fuel until production catches up again. And on top of that, sorry to be the bearer of more bad news, experts reckon that we could see an immediate jump in petrol prices of 5 cents to 20 cents per litre, especially in Victoria.
But Victoria's Premier Jacinta Allen pushed back on calls for our national fuel plan to be lifted to stage three yesterday. She says that it would only cause stress and uncertainty and we have enough imported fuel on the way to cover us.
To that end, PM Anthony Albanese has been on his diplomatic blitz of Southeast Asia to shore up our fuel supply chain. We've spoken about that a couple of times this week. He was in Malaysia yesterday and he announced that we've locked in an extra 100 million litres of diesel from Brunei and South Korea.

Chapter 3: How will the refinery fire impact fuel supply in Australia?
And the reason that it's such a big deal is because Nuku is part of a program for the Korean wolf, which is now extinct in the wild. So he's pretty important in keeping the species alive. But still, he is a wolf. And so authorities aren't taking any chances when it comes to people's safety.
No, they've closed the zoo and to try and lure him back, they're playing wolf howls over its speakers. Even South Korea's president, Lee Jae-myung, has weighed in. He's hoping for no human casualties and for Nukgu's safe return.
Yeah, straight home, no snacks.
And that's us almost done. But we're not signing off without Friday Lights, of course. You've got a cake recipe for us today.
I do. So we're about to have another teenager in the house. So send thoughts and prayers, Alice. Got another birthday this weekend. He's asked for a red velvet cake. It's one of my favourites too. It takes me straight back to New York where I tried it for the first time at Magnolia Bakery. It's a bit of a famous one and I was instantly smitten.
So I got home and went on the hunt, as you do, to find a good recreation. And Melbourne baker Natalie Paul's version comes pretty close. So we'll link to that in the episode notes.
Yeah, I saw it has a white chocolate, custard and cream cheese icing. Can't go wrong there. Don't forget the Weekly Wraps out tomorrow morning to get you across the week in news. You'll find that in the News Club channel. But for us, we're done. Thank you for listening today. Have a great weekend and we'll speak to you again on Monday.
