What is the concept behind 'Strangers on a Bench'?

Tom Rosenthal 0:04
hello sorry to bother you um can i ask you a slightly odd question um i'm making a podcast um called strangers on a bench where essentially i talk to people i don't know on benches for 10 or 15 minutes um are you up for that do you want to give it a go
Tom Rosenthal 0:38
So you ready? First question? It's an easy one. What are you hoping this first question is going to be?
Lizzy McAlpine 0:52
Is that the first question?
Tom Rosenthal 0:53
It is a question, but it's not the first question.
Lizzy McAlpine 0:56
What am I hoping it's going to be? To be honest, just something easy.
Tom Rosenthal 0:59
Relaxed.

How does the guest feel about their work schedule at the bagel shop?

Lizzy McAlpine 1:00
And it is.
Tom Rosenthal 1:02
Is there a day of the week that you favour
Lizzy McAlpine 1:05
Oh, it's a good one. So I work in a bagel shop and the shift pattern completely changes every week. So I don't have the routine, which means that generally I actually don't have a favorite because every single one looks different pattern wise every single week.
Tom Rosenthal 1:24
The classic bagel shop pattern.
Lizzy McAlpine 1:26
Classic bagel shop pattern. That's what they call it, isn't it? Yeah, that's... In the books.
Tom Rosenthal 1:29
Disorientating. You don't know who you are.
Lizzy McAlpine 1:31
Yeah, every day is kind of a Sunday. Like, this is a day off for me.
Tom Rosenthal 1:34
Okay, well, let's play a small game.
Lizzy McAlpine 1:37
Okay.
Tom Rosenthal 1:39
Let's imagine this Sunday, which could be a Wednesday or whatever, you know what I mean? A day... free of bagels there's not one bagel not a single bagel you've not even think about it but basically basically take me from like waking up all the way through to going to bed what for you is like a really great bagel free day so to speak um
Lizzy McAlpine 1:59
Well, I love being in nature, so I think I would wake up... In nature? Yeah, well, not in nature. Well, okay, if we're talking dream, dream day... Yeah, let's do this. My dream day would be I would be on a through hike with one of my best friends, and we would wake up in the tent, and then we would get out of the tent and have a terrible breakfast, and then we would walk all day... And then we would stop for lunch. And the lunch would probably be like fish out of a tin, which probably doesn't sound like the dream to many people. And then we would set up our tent and go to sleep.
Tom Rosenthal 2:36
After lunch?
Lizzy McAlpine 2:37
No, after walking for the rest of the afternoon.
Tom Rosenthal 2:39
What's happening in this tent? I get it, I get it. Funny enough, I actually did have fish out of a tin for lunch.

What does a perfect bagel-free day look like for the guest?

Lizzy McAlpine 2:45
Did you? What kind of fish did you have?
Tom Rosenthal 2:47
Trout.
Lizzy McAlpine 2:47
Really? I've never had trout out of a tin. It sounds quite bold.
Tom Rosenthal 2:52
It is really nice, actually.
Lizzy McAlpine 2:53
Yeah. Did you just eat it?
Tom Rosenthal 2:55
Yeah.
Lizzy McAlpine 2:55
And you had nothing else?
Tom Rosenthal 2:57
No.
Lizzy McAlpine 2:57
Wow, good source of protein.
Tom Rosenthal 2:59
It's just like gets it done. Yeah. You know?
Lizzy McAlpine 3:01
It really does.
Tom Rosenthal 3:02
Okay, let's go back. It's a through... I'm through hiking. What's that as opposed to hiking?
Lizzy McAlpine 3:07
So through hiking is when you've got a big bag and it's got your tent and everything you need in it and you hike. I'm Scottish. So in Scotland, you can legally wild camp anywhere. So that's kind of my favourite thing to do.
Tom Rosenthal 3:19
What's the only non-essential thing in this bag of yours?
Lizzy McAlpine 3:22
Many non-essential things. Really? Yeah, I'm not one of those ultralight campers that likes to have... You just shove it all in there? They saw a toothbrush in half so that they don't have too much weight. I'm not like that.

What insights does the guest share about through hiking?

Lizzy McAlpine 3:33
The biggest non-essential... I was thinking about this as I walked up here.
Tom Rosenthal 3:37
What? As you walked up here, you were thinking about non-essential camping items?
Lizzy McAlpine 3:40
I was thinking about non-essential...
Tom Rosenthal 3:42
Were you really? Not even essential ones? Because that would be maybe make sense.
Lizzy McAlpine 3:47
What I was actually thinking about is, so, because your hair gets disgusting when you through hike because you can't wash it. But then I was thinking, because the weather's so nice and I'm about to hike Hadrian's Wall, all of it, can I wear this? And then I was thinking, is that an essential item? How much weight would it take up? Would it be worth doing? And then I was thinking, who am I kidding? I'm not one of those ultralight through hikers. It doesn't matter. I'm going to bring the head scarf thing with me.
Tom Rosenthal 4:12
This headscarf thing we should be wearing now.
Lizzy McAlpine 4:15
Yeah, I think it'll come.
Tom Rosenthal 4:16
I think you just shove everything in there.
Lizzy McAlpine 4:17
Yeah.
Tom Rosenthal 4:18
You know, it's your hike.
Lizzy McAlpine 4:19
It's my hike.
Tom Rosenthal 4:20
There are no rules.
