Chapter 1: What historical significance does Scotland's win over Haiti hold?
We are going to America with the chance to be history makers. Steve Clark, what a hero. Live from Glasgow and live with the Tartan Army in downtown Boston. 0141 951 1025. This is Clyde One Super Scoreboard.
Hello and welcome to Super Scoreboard Sunday. Scotland win their World Cup opener 1-0 against Haiti. Our first win at the tournament in over 30 years with John McGinn scoring that all-important winning goal.
Chapter 2: How did the atmosphere in Boston reflect Scotland's football culture?
And now we sit top of our group with a small matter of Morocco and Brazil to go. I'm Andrew McLean. Joining me in the studio are maybe a bit of a weary-eyed Jim Duffy and David Friel. How are we feeling? Because I think... everyone in the nation is going to be feeling exactly the same. Delighted at the fact that Scotland got the win, maybe slightly tired, maybe slightly hungover.
Tired, emotional, relieved, delighted, proud, everything, Jim. As you said, Andrew, I think we waited 28 years for a World Cup goal.
36 years for World Cup win we will take it I think we all wanted more than 1-0 we were being greedy but the pressure was on Steve Clarke and his players to deliver and they did that and I think we now can go into the tournament with real positivity and a draw Jim maybe gets us into the next stage I mean, it was a huge game for Scotland. There's no denying that.
And the pressure was absolutely on them. And, you know, we feel as if we should be beating Haiti. We've got the quality. I think we started the game okay. A wee bit fortuitous with the goal, but we had a couple of chances before that as well, particularly up the right-hand side with Ganon Doak in that side. And, you know, we looked quite positive. But I think...
We didn't capitalise on that lead and I think the players then almost decided themselves, listen, we're going to protect us and we just kind of sat back off them and thankfully they didn't have enough quality to hurt us because they only really had one chance from the header from Piero late in the second half.
but their final ball was poor so regardless of the overall performance the most important thing was getting those three points particularly with Brazil and Morocco drawn in the first game so yeah it puts us in a good position and I think we've got to be as positive as we can be it's a fantastic atmosphere
you know over in Boston and all around the country as you said I mean I got my bed about half five obviously I'm not going to suffer from a hangover but certainly I think like many Scottish fans you know just absolutely thrilled that we managed to get that victory as David said was it 36 years since we've had a victory in the world so that just shows you how difficult it is Andrew so we can't underestimate how important that one is

Chapter 3: What were the standout performances in Scotland's match against Haiti?
People will talk about permutations and goal difference and all that type of thing. But it's Scotland getting a win at a World Cup. The players had that pressure, had that expectation. It was a game that everyone said that this squad need to win to stand any chance of going through. And Steve Clarke's side have gone out. They've done the business. They've won the game.
Yeah and I don't think you can downplay that side of the pressure because you know everybody looked at the scenes last night and I'm sure for the players going out and walking out and seeing the crowd and seeing all the Scotland strips and hearing the anthem it would inspire them but there was also pressure to deliver and it's been that long I think as well if you look at this group of players the last two tournaments let's face it haven't been very good they haven't won any games and
we were talking before we came on air there that would have been terrible yeah exactly that's the thing and we were talking before we came on air Andrew that Scotland being the favourites in any game doesn't really tend to go well so yeah I wanted a 2-3 now I was full of bravado before the game thinking that Haiti were really there for the take and I actually thought they were a better team
then maybe um some people gave him credit for as Jim said they probably just didn't have that quality in the final third but Scotland get the job done we can talk about permutations goal difference and all that I think right now you just want the three points in the bag and look forward 01419511025 I know you are tired out there I know some of you might have a few sore heads maybe you just need someone to talk to you want
to chat about the game you need that comfort we are here for you all the way through until 7 o'clock 0141 951 1025 Scotland winning a game at the World Cup two massive games to go just tell us how you watched the game how did you enjoy it maybe you're listening from over in Boston and you want to get in touch so whatever is on your mind you can give us a call there is huge domestic news going on that we will get on to a bit later on of course the full focus is going to be Scotland at the World Cup at the moment but
Rangers managerial situation it's moved very quickly over the past few days where Danny Rule has had Andrew Cavanagh's full backing to be Rangers manager for next season all of a sudden he's on his way to RB Salzburg and Derek McInnes looks as if he's going to be the next Rangers manager in normal circumstances this would just be dominant but it's almost been an afterthought
a footnote into what's happened in the last couple of days Danny Rule I think it's imminent he's going to go to RB Salzburg Derek McKinnis is a man the Rangers want I think the deal is pretty much agreed and he will leave hearts just like Lawrence Shackling take him to quote Gordon Dale along M8 to Ibrox unbelievable news I mean incredible I mean as you said in normal years this would be headline news but with the World Cup game
Last night, we were not under the radar, but certainly not given the same profile as we normally do, but it was a huge decision by Rangers, one, to lose a manager, two, to take Den McKinnis, and also from Hart's perspective.
you know going so close to winning the title last year I mean I'm sure they'll have a process with Tony Bloom but we all know how to deal with the recruitment for the players I'm sure they've got the same process for a manager so it seems to me as if Hearts aren't fighting very hard to keep him because he's under contract so I'm sure they could have really said no you're not going anywhere and

Chapter 4: How did Scotland manage pressure during the game?
they don't need to take the money but they've obviously thought no this is something that we're happy to do because they must have someone else already lined up so yeah I think there's still a bit of movement to come in Scottish football Andrew but our focus certainly over the next few days will still be on this World Cup campaign and hopefully we can go again against Morocco on Tuesday
Yeah, we'll get on to that a bit later on. So if you want to chat about that, get your calls lined up 01419511025. But we are going to look back on Scotland's match against Haiti last night. As I said, maybe you just want to talk about the experience. Maybe it was the first game you've ever seen of Scotland at a World Cup.
How did you feel when John McGinn scored what is surely going to go down as the greatest World Cup goal of all time? Definitely didn't take too long.
deflections no dubious goals panel here about whether it's his goal or not it's definitely John McGinn's goal and it doesn't matter how it went in we got the goal and that's all that mattered yeah we'll try to work out how many deflections it actually took but look you would take anything and I think there was a bit of a delayed reaction even in the stadium because people weren't 100% sure if it'd actually get in but yeah
Look, I think the water break, the hydration break actually helped Scotland because Steve Clarke got the players together and it seemed as if they started to go a little bit more direct and I felt a wee bit tentative to start with maybe. Great play from Che Adams first, then Ben Garandoke and John McGinn was where you want them to be.
we didn't really build on it but as you said you just had to get the win and we can talk about the goal difference and all that down the line it was a huge moment a historic moment and yeah you could see the Tartan army over there and back here how much everybody enjoyed it yeah I mean the goals we scored the spectacular goals against Denmark to get through into the campaign you used them all up in one
yeah well last night or earlier this morning's goal was you know was a completely different goal but you know there's been many occasions where we've been in tournaments and maybe not had that little you know break where something's run across the goal line and someone slid in and missed it by fractions or we've hit the post or whatever happens to be so last thing getting that wee bit of luck you take it and tournament football is about winning this is as simple as that Andrew it's not about
and you can grow into the tournament provided you're still in it you know sounds obvious but you know many times we say Scotland did really well played really well but lost so yeah we didn't play great I didn't think we were terrible but you know we kind of
as I said almost resigned ourselves in the second half to protecting the lead that we had but as long as you stay with that you know nil on your side of it then great and 1-0 you know we'd take that in any game in the knockout stages of a World Cup

Chapter 5: What tactical changes might Scotland consider for the Morocco game?
It was a night like no other. And we were on air until five o'clock in the morning. The bar, Tapyard Social, that we were doing the show live from, I think was open. People were there until about half past four. I think I maybe left there about quarter past five, jumped in my car, drove home. And genuinely, it was like the land of the walking dead, but all kitted out in Scotland gear.
I was driving along the street and it was just hordes of Scotland supporters that could barely walk in a straight line but were still singing were still having a great time the sun was out by that point it generally looked as if it could have been midday and it was half five in the morning and everyone just seemed to have an incredible time because as I mentioned there's a full generation of Scotland fan that haven't seen this haven't been able to experience it and then there's the generation above that that haven't been able to experience it with
their family and haven't seen it for so long that there was just so many things coming together to make it such a special night slash morning.
Yeah, but it shows you how important that is for the country, you know, because that's exactly what I mean. As you were saying last night, I was dropping some friends off last night.
in the West End, about five o'clock, just after five o'clock in the morning, and then I'm driving back home, and as you say, you know, the throngs of people that were all wandering about, it was so strange, it was like, and it was obviously, as you say, the sun was shining, it was like a Saturday afternoon, it was unbelievable, rather than that time in the morning, but the amount of people, as you say, were going out, and everybody was smiling, even if they were
stagging a wee bit here and there, they were still smiling, everybody was joyous and you know you could still hear a few songs going and you know just everybody's, that feel good factor, you can't underestimate that feel good factor and what football brings in these times Andrew, it just brings that togetherness, that fun, that spirit, you know everybody's on the same page, you see all the various social media clips of all the different pubs and all the different events
where people were going to you know from all the way across the states to back here and everybody's just so happy yeah we can analyse a little bit of the details of the game and how it went but when you're a fan the most important thing is that togetherness that bond with your other fans and that joy that it brings when you get a win and yeah I mean it's incredible and it was an incredible night for Scotland and all the supporters you know all around the world you know the Scotland supporters all around the world
You know how you really knew it was a special night? Steve Clarke was smiling.

Chapter 6: What impact does Steve Clarke's management style have on the team?
Smiling. Smiling at the end of the game. You don't see it often. I mean, we've seen it maybe a bit more in the last few weeks than we have done. Oh, he's got his new contract. He's been a lot more relaxed in the build-up to this game, but you could tell during the game he certainly wasn't relaxed. He was never going to be.
You talked about that first hydration break and the camera closed in on him and he was being really passionate, deliberate about...
His instructions, and that was part of the game management that actually worked in Scotland's favour, as you said, that it's almost, we talked about it last night, that it's almost a sort of Americanisation of this World Cup that the hydration breaks almost turn the game into four quarters rather than...
rather than two halves and Scotland started the game really well then maybe started to fade slightly Haiti got more into the game and Scotland used that hydration break really well to get back in the front foot and eventually managed to get the goal that ultimately won Scotland the game yeah and in terms of Steve Clarke being happy I think he had said himself he wanted to enjoy this tournament
more than he had the last two because he was pretty honest he said he hadn't enjoyed the previous two and Jim has just said I mean no wonder given how Scotland did perform it was interesting you could see how animated he was I think you don't need a lip reader to see what he said to Jack Henry after he pulled out one header he was pretty blunt with him but I think after the game it was just relief for him because he's a Scotland manager that has got Scotland to tournaments but had never won a game at a tournament and he took a lot of criticism probably deservedly so especially after the last Euros so I think for him to get that first win
to just get that monkey off the back almost where you can now go into the tournament and if Scotland get a couple of narrow defeats they might still get through you know it could take one point would well 100% get Scotland through so I think the pressure is off Steve Clarke to a point because he's now a Scotland manager that's won a game at a tournament but he'll want more now he'll want Scotland to go on go into the knockout stages and see where he can go from there
I think we have made a scheduling error with this show because I think the time of the game last night means that everyone is still in their bed. They're now still on American time. Because the phone lines are genuinely quite quiet, despite the fact that it's the same day as Scotland have won a World Cup game.

Chapter 7: How does Scotland's squad depth affect their World Cup strategy?
But I think it genuinely is because people are still on American time. People are probably having a breakfast.
We're the duvet covering the junk food today.
for people to just lie there and just stuff themselves with whatever rubbish they can and just go over the night and yeah I mean there will still be you know people just surfacing after such a long because you know people have been up probably some early afternoon all the way through to the wee small hours of the morning but again in a good way you know everyone's enjoying it it was a happy time and I think that's what we want more of
as I mentioned the other one you know we look at a table yeah it's the first it's the first games but it's the first time that I can remember even and ever probably that we're looking at a table I want to come to and we're top you're thinking that's great yeah
if it lasts for a few days it doesn't even look real does it if it lasts till next Friday whenever it is the next game I think I'd say Tuesday then brilliant I mean it might not last in typical Scotland it probably won't last very long but if it gives us a week looking at this is fantastic and you know I think everyone you know was looking at this World Cup with a wee bit of apprehension with so many things we weren't 100% sure of but
so far in the games I mean Australia beat Turkey last night 2-0 and you know Scotland's winning and there's been a couple of other kind of surprising results so yeah long may it continue and that's another thing about Scotland not taking the win for granted because I think if you look last night at the game before Qatar, Switzerland I mean Switzerland were heavy favourites to win that game
could target the point right to the end 96 minutes yeah and then Brazil Morocco obviously Morocco are a very good team very good team but Brazil favourites didn't get the win and then Australia Turkey as you were saying after it Jim where Australia beat them as well so I think to go in as favourites and do it I think it's huge and to talk about previous experience as well I mean I'm old enough to remember Costa Rica in 1990 and
I'm still scared I was nine thinking I've never heard of Costa Rica Scotland will beat them 3 or 4-0 and it never happened and people will still talk about that so don't ever take this for granted that Scotland have won a game at a World Cup Right I know you're tired I know you're hungover but we've got a game to talk about Scotland are top of our World Cup group we have
beating Haiti two games to go can we make history can we get through to the knockout stages of the competition what did you like about last night what do you think maybe needs to improve going into the Morocco and Brazil games what about individual performances was there any standout performances for you do you think there need to be any changes in terms of personnel or shape for those games coming up as I mentioned we will get on to some domestic matters a bit later on on the show we are here until seven o'clock so

Chapter 8: What are the expectations for Scotland moving forward in the tournament?
Obviously we go into the game with a little bit less pressure than everybody put on us going into this game. So we go to the next two games with a little bit less pressure. If we defend as well as we did there and show the same resilience and hopefully play a little bit better with the ball and create a little bit more, we'll be okay.
How much pressure do you think it takes off the next two matches? Because there certainly would have been a lot more pressure taken off if Scotland had got those extra couple of goals that people have talked about. But certainly having three points on the board gives Scotland that buffer.
But there is that expectation that Scotland either may need another point or may need to just not lose by a certain number of goals in the next two games. It's a kind of strange dynamic situation.
yeah but I do think there's huge pressure off because I think if you even look at the last two tournaments Andrew losing the first games meant Scotland were always playing catch up you were always having to win a game you know if you think back to the first Euros it was losing to the Czechs and then get a draw against England but you go into the Croatia game you have to win that and then the Germany game in Germany was just you know let's not even go there
so I think it takes huge pressure off in that sense look two tough games two of the toughest games you could get at this World Cup you know everybody knows about Brazil and they might not be the Brazil of previous but they've still got world class players and I thought Morocco were absolutely outstanding at points last night I think they'll go I mean they got to the semi-final last time don't know if you saw much at gym but they're a really good team and
I don't know I'm not saying Scotland are definitely going to get through but I think getting that win takes a lot of pressure off and you know what you're after now I think that you would probably think it would take a minor miracle for Haiti to take anything from Morocco and Brazil so you're going to say right
they're both going to beat Haiti and probably beat them comfortably so you know Scotland's got to take something from Morocco and Brazil to have the chance of maybe finishing either second or best place third finish you know eight teams can qualify through that way so I think but
It puts a little bit more pressure on these other teams as well because the expectations for Morocco and Brazil, as the players had said last night, they're two of the top ten teams ranked. So their expectation is, and they've probably looked at that group before the ball was kicked, their fans, their media, anybody that looks at those countries and thinks,
you'll qualify comfortably from that group but the fact is that with Scotland winning and both of them drawing it's put a wee bit of pressure on them so yeah I think it has helped it's helped us enormously of course it has but I think the players should go into the game and we are I think at times better being underdogs I think he will change the team I think he will change the system because I think I don't think we can just go 4-4-2 against these type of teams I don't think we're good enough and I don't I think we would be
