Yeah, you're very welcome along to Tech Talk. This is Jess Kelly with you here on News Talk. Coming up over the next hour, Google's Fitbit is coming for a whoop. But who wins out in the battle of the wearables? We'll review the latest gaming titles, including a very exciting 007 First Light title. And as ever, I'll answer your tech questions. If you want to get in touch, you can do so right now.

TechTalk at Newstalk.com is the email address or you'll find me on Instagram at JessKellyNT. I do hope you're well and that you've been enjoying the glorious sunshine over the last few days. Of course, the weather has turned in time for me to take on the VHI Women's Mini Marathon tomorrow in aid of Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, but you're looking to listen.

Over the last few days, I have to say, I have found it almost impossible to do anything in the evenings other than sitting in the garden. And later on the show, I'll have some tech tips for gardeners that I have been using over the last while, as I have been staring lovingly at my lupins, which have made a comeback from last year.

84.478 - 94.307 Jess Kelly

But before we get to my version of what I did on a week of summery weather, let's say hello to our dear friend, John Reilly of TheEffect.net. John, how are you?

94.547 - 95.428 John Reilly

Good, Jess, and you?

95.408 - 112.81 Jess Kelly

I'm very well, thank you. We have so much to talk through over the next wee while. And as we always say, if people have any questions for you specifically, or if they want you to review a certain game, you can email us techtalk at newstalk.com. And we are going to talk about some games a little bit later on.

112.79 - 133.043 Jess Kelly

I'm very excited you're here because I know we've both been testing out the new Google Fitbit Air, which I have seen plastered all over my Instagram as being the whoop killer or the real whoop rival. And I want to get your thoughts on feelings on the initial first period that you've had the device for.

Chapter 2: How does the FitBit Air compare to the WHOOP device?

477.644 - 501.07 Jess Kelly

Yeah, like it's funny, the wireless charging capability, which Whoop does have. So you get this little pack that you sit on to the device itself. Then you can charge the wireless charger so you can have it topped up and then you can wear it out and about. But what I found and what happened to me this week was I lost the flipping pack. So I've broken my 500 and something day streak.

501.11 - 514.59 Jess Kelly

And a shout out to Ger Gilroy, who has heroically brought his charger in for me to top up my... my whoop whilst I wait. But I actually like the notion of having a set non-wireless charger for this because it's another thing to lose.

0

514.63 - 529.015 Jess Kelly

And as you say, because it is a specific charger for the specific device, if you don't have your charger, if you lose it or if you misplace it or whatever it is, you're absolutely goosed. So that is a point of frustration and it's a curious design choice by Google, I would say.

0

529.552 - 555.272 John Reilly

Yeah, I guess it's, you know, we've seen the USB-C being somewhat forced on every brand and it kind of suits the consumers that I think there could be a day that we see similar kind of charging capabilities for devices like this, that yes, it's a USB cable as such, but the fact it's not a USB port on the device or it's not wireless charging compatible with kind of multiple, you know, the more general Qi wireless charging pads that everyone seems to have nowadays.

0

555.252 - 578.965 John Reilly

that's that functionality i hope kind of trickles into future generations that we can just pop this little puck onto any charging wireless charging pad to give it a top up rather than going oh no i've left it because you know you say you've lost the puck but the cable is just as easy to lose because it is what it is it's just a little usb cable with a with a specific end charging port at the end of it that charges the device but that's a first world problem that we're having here but yeah just something to be aware of

578.945 - 594.45 Jess Kelly

Yeah, it is something to be aware of. So let's talk about then the functionality of it, because the key selling point of the Weep or indeed the Google Fitbit Air is not the look and the feel of it and all the rest. It's the functionality. It's what it tells you. It's what it does.

594.49 - 613.84 Jess Kelly

So when I set up my app, you put in sort of basic information, you put in whether it's a fitness goal or a health goal or a sleep goal, whatever it may be. And from there, then, you're brought into this fairly busy interface, in my opinion. What was your experience? And talk us through some of the key functionality of the device itself.

614.781 - 630.383 John Reilly

Yeah, I think, as you said, the setup process, I did actually like, given that it was almost conversational from the get-go. So there wasn't loads of kind of information you had to type in. You're already having a conversation with Google's AI, kind of Google's health coach, powered by probably Gemini and their AI platform. But

630.363 - 644.079 John Reilly

I think anyone that picks up this device will get three months, if I'm correct, of the Google Health premium plan, which is kind of a 10-hour month, but you'll get three months free. And then that kind of, as you said, lets you kind of set out the stalls of what you want to achieve with this. Do you want better sleep?
