Chapter 1: What recent events are affecting the NBA?
Good morning and welcome to the NBA Daily for January 10th, 2025. Coming up, the Cavs were playing the Raptors in what could have been a letdown game, but luckily Darius Garland exists. Kelly Yuko stops by to talk about the Rockets and the Grizz and to let us know which team is a better fit for Jimmy Butler. Good morning, everybody. Good morning, S. Morning, morning.
A little bit of, we got some bad news to just start the show. First, the Hornets game against the Lakers out here in LA postponed due to the massive LA fires, which if you're listening or watching, you no doubt know about. We wanted to send out our thoughts and prayers to everybody affected by these fires.
I've had a lot of friends, you know, personally have a lot of friends who have had to evacuate. Me too, yeah. We learned today that Lakers head coach JJ Redick, his house was lost in a fire. You know, so it's a very sad time around here, but generally everywhere. So definitely want to send out our thoughts to everybody affected by the fires. The basketball game. Guess what? They can make it up.
Some of it does not matter.
Not a big deal.
Exactly. Other bad news. Sixers bright spot. Jared McCain going to be out for the year with that torn meniscus after surgery. We had gotten an update that he was healing pretty well. But, you know, about a month ago and we got the news today that he was not going to make a return this season. A lot of people are thinking about the Sixers as this dark horse.
If they're a play in team or if they're the sixth seed. I wonder if people feel.
as strongly now that they know jared mccain is going to be back for a potential playoff run yeah i mean he he and spurts here was their x factor right uh especially as a score working well next to maxi uh it's a shame that he's going to be missing the season but also makes sense given the fact that it's a knee injury so you want to give him that time especially as a young guy to like get back to full strength before pushing him in the postseason um
In terms of them being a dark horse, I actually think the thing that's affecting them the most is Paul George not being what he's supposed to be. Truthfully, just not being as good as you'd hope he'd be when you signed him in the summer. In terms of being a dark horse, I think that's it, man. You've got to get Paul George to be the guy that you signed, and that will change things. But who knows?

Chapter 2: Who is the better trade candidate: Bradley Beal or Zach LaVine?
Chapter 3: What are the implications of Jared McCain's injury?

Still a little bit of season left for him to turn it around. Yeah.
And also Embiid dealing with a foot sprain. You got to get him healthy again. Yeah. Just been a rough season for them. The Cavs were set up in what I can only describe as the ultimate letdown game. I mean, this is the second night of a back-to-back for them. Almost there. They had the Super Bowl last night, you know, against the Thunder. And the game was close.
I got to tell you, I was sweating a little bit. They wind up pulling it out, 132-126. Darius Garland just... Just clutch time. By the way, no Donovan Mitchell in this game. They gave him the night off and Darius Garland had a great clutch performance, hit another clutch shot. Just again, back to what we say about the Cavs. They just have a guy who steps up every single night.
Totally. Yeah. It felt like when the Cavs put the gas on the, you know, put the pedal on the, whatever you want to call it. Like they just were running away with things. Second quarter, it was Jared Allen just dominating. And then in the fourth quarter, it was Darius Garland just carving everybody up. I will say, I think that the Cavs need, need, need to have four All-Stars.
Like, I think they have to have them. When you think about what Jared Allen has done this season as a rim protector for them, obviously Evan Mobley is going to get his first All-Star nod. Donovan Mitchell is going to get his All-Star nod. And the way Darius Garland has performed this season, the bounce back that he's had, we talked about, like,

Chapter 4: How do the Rockets and Grizzlies match up for the playoffs?
Chapter 5: What role does Desmond Bain play for the Grizzlies?
Chapter 6: Can the Cavs maintain their winning streak?
If you're the Pistons, right, who just lost Jaden Ivey, who knows how long he's going to, you know what I mean? Go after Zach Levine.
And with Levine, I guess it's a shorter contract because he's likely to opt out after next season. But my expectation would be that if you trade for Levine, you're agreeing to the extension, at least a wink and a nod that, you know, is, hey, if the wheels don't fall off next season, we're going to keep you. And honestly, he's going to be going into his age 30 season next year. So I get that.
But for me, it's Beals under contract for two years. No option.
But also a no trade clause also.
But the no trade clause. So you are stuck with them. But I don't know. Guys, if you're watching on YouTube, let us know in the comments. Would you rather have Bradley Beal or Zach Levine? We've been trying to figure this one out all night. Guys, stick around after the break. Kelly Eco is here to talk Memphis and Houston.

Another night, another marquee matchup, maybe playoff preview in the NBA. So we had to get Kelly Eco in here. Kelly, the NBA Daily Curse says every time we invite someone who covers a team onto the show, their team loses. And tonight the Rockets won. They beat the Grizzlies, but you also cover the Grizzlies. So technically, no curse. Yeah.
I got to ask you, because I'm assuming that this is the question that everyone has on their mind. Right. Did Taylor Jenkins blow the end of this game down the stretch? It's a three point game. Desmond Bain has the basketball and Memphis is in like semi transition rocket scrambling on defense. And Desmond Bain pulls up as Taylor Jenkins is taking the time out. So you tell me, Kelly, did he blow it?
He messed up. And this isn't the first time he's done that this season. You know, when you have a Memphis team that's so good in transition and given how the last five minutes of that game had shaken out, you know, it was anybody's game really for at least a good two and a half minute stretch down there.

Chapter 7: How has Alperen Şengün improved defensively?
Chapter 8: What strategies will teams need for playoffs?
There's a lot of people with mustaches they don't need. Look, he scored 49 points without a green light. 49 points without a green light.
okay so as uh you know you you cover the draft and you do prospect work um what do you think like where does he wind up you know i don't know if it's going to be houston but like where does he wind up positionally like is he going to play more off the ball like is he going to be able to play on the ball like i'm not i'm not sure how this works out for him he's such a good shooter do you see like the value of him running around off screens and
I think one of the things that you got to be curious about is like the defensive side of the ball, because if he's if he's being asked to guard twos and threes, then that's trouble. You know what I mean? And so, yeah, I think the question you have read moving forward, it's like, yeah, he's an incredible shooter. I think learning from a guy like Fred Van Vliet is going to be interesting because.
Yeah. Right.
Smaller guy. Great off ball. Like spent a lot of time in Toronto being this off ball menace, too. So learning how to move without the ball, being a guy who I think grew into a good facilitator, has been a good facilitator for the Rockets now, too. All of those aspects is something that Fred can really help read with.
So to your question, I think it just depends on the defensive side of the ball of if he'll stick.
Yeah.
But as a guy who can just be a flamethrower, like you've got Peyton Pritchard on the Boston Celtics, who just is like probably going to win six man of the year this year. Just comes in and changes the game.
Yeah.
