Chapter 1: What happened to the Australian flotilla activists detained in Israel?
a listener production. Hello, happy Friday and welcome to The Briefing. I'm Sasha Barbagat. Controversial personalities and veteran TV hosts Carl Stefanovic and Eddie Maguire were this week announced as the hosts of a brand new show on radio stations across the country.
The pair have been parachuted into the role at ARN, the same radio network that's been in the headlines recently following the highly publicised divorce from Carl and Jackie O.
This partnership is a lot about that, which is we have two people that are recognised within the industry and have had success over a number of years are now joining the ARN team. I think that from a corporate perspective, that looks really good for them.
That chat is coming up in the second half of this episode. But first, let's get into the headlines with Chris Spirou on Friday, the 22nd of May.
Morning, Sash.

Chapter 2: What are the implications of ISIS brides returning to Australia?
Eleven Australians who were part of a flotilla bound for Gaza when they were detained by Israel have now been released. The group was among 428 people on more than 50 vessels that were intercepted by the IDF, with state officials confirming all detainees are now in the process of being deported.
It's understood the Australian activists have been met by consular officials in Israel before they boarded flights to Istanbul overnight. Their condition is not yet known at the time of recording.
Now, the activists have spent three days in custody in Israel while footage of their arrest and detainment sparked global backlash. So a video posted by far-right Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir showed him taunting the flotilla members as they were forced to kneel with their hands cable-tied behind their backs.
And he posted this footage himself, which drew a rare rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the actions do not represent Israel. Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong condemned the treatment of the activists as seen in this footage, recalling Israel's ambassador to Australia.
Yeah, he criticised the footage as disgraceful, but also had this to say.
That was Hillel Newman speaking in Canberra there.

Chapter 3: What energy policy did Pauline Hanson propose?
Staying overseas and another group of Australian women and children linked to Islamic State are believed to be on their way home. It's understood seven women and 14 children have left the al-Raj refugee camp in Syria and are currently travelling by bus to Damascus, where they're expected to board a flight back to Australia.
The exact timing of their arrival isn't known just yet, but when they do land, they will be the second group of IS-linked Australians to return in recent weeks. Earlier this month, four women and nine children made the same journey. Three of those women were arrested and charged on arrival in Melbourne and Sydney.
Two have been charged with slavery offences and the other with joining a terrorist organisation and travelling to a declared terrorist area. All three of those women remain in custody.
Yeah, and it's not yet known how the Australian government or Australian officials are going to react to this latest return of so-called ISIS brides. As you said, the last group, a number of them were detained and we had that warning before they had touched down. We had government officials coming out saying...
Chapter 4: How did the Queen influence Prince Andrew's career?
a number of these women are going to face charges. We haven't had that same commentary just yet. So it remains to be seen what will happen when they do actually arrive in Australia. But we do know the government has repeatedly insisted it is not helping bring the women and children home.
To politics now where Pauline Hanson has slammed campaigns calling for a tax on gas exports and has instead offered up her own energy plan.
This won't be some socialist takeover. This will be a great financial investment.
Speaking at a major energy conference in Adelaide yesterday, the One Nation leader outlined her pitch for the government to fund exploration rebates for new offshore gas projects. and in return take up a 30% stake in those projects. So in plain English, what she wants is the government to give gas companies tax breaks or cash refunds in exchange for owning up to 30% of new projects.
Chapter 5: What led to the radio move of Karl Stefanovic and Eddie McGuire?
So the profits would then flow into a Norway-inspired sovereign wealth fund, which would support things like domestic fertilizer production, fuel refining and local energy supply. But the board, she says, will consist only of successful oil and gas industry experts, not government-appointed bureaucrats. So there are big questions around who might sit on that board, Chris.
Yeah, I mean, the name obviously being thrown around is Gina Reinhart. Famously, she doesn't love government intervention in the industry. So this is something that, you know, can kind of bring someone like Gina Reinhart to the table.
Pauline Hanson also yesterday spoke about how the public was rightly unhappy about the return to taxpayers from Australian resources, but she was critical of that proposed 25% tax on gas exports. She called it economic vandalism, even though recent polling shows overwhelming support for it, even among her voting base. Um,
Chapter 6: What challenges does ARN face after losing Kyle and Jackie O?
Also yesterday, we got a little bit of a look into how One Nation is navigating the media. On the eve of the Farah by-election, we had her chief of staff boot ABC journalists from a press conference. I'll play a little bit of that for you.
Bye-bye to the ABC.
See you later, guys.
So what, yeah, that was quite viral at the time because if you couldn't quite pick it up, Pauline then questions James Ashby, her chief of staff, and says, well, why are we booting out local ABC? They're rural and regional. And Ashby replied, because they're reporting back to ABC Canberra.
So that was an interesting exchange to witness. Yeah, and we got, you know, something similar yesterday.

Chapter 7: How does the new radio pairing impact the Australian media landscape?
We had one of her media advisors actually tell a journalist to shut up.
Is Ashby ready for the stand at the next election? No, shut up. We're done. Did you just say shut up? Yes, I did tell you to shut up.
Yeah, so unfortunately, this is something that we're going to continue seeing. This isn't something that we have seen, I think, in Australian politics, at least when it comes to Labor and Liberal governments of the last decade or so. We haven't seen... Ever, ever.
Chapter 8: What insights did Craig Bruce share about the future of ARN?
And this is the thing in this place. It's exactly what we've seen Donald Trump do in the White House with the press gallery there is that they've let a bunch of others in and then they've started trying to restrict legacy media. And the whole point of press freedom is that you can't restrict anyone and you can't make rules around that.
Everyone, you know, obviously there's security protocols, but in terms of journalism and reporting and press freedom, Everyone gets a seat at the table. You don't get to pick and choose who comes into your press conference. That's the whole point. It's the fourth estate. It's holding them to account.
It's been revealed the Queen was, quote, very keen for her son, the now disgraced Prince Andrew, to be given the job of UK Trade Envoy. New documents released by the UK government show conversation records between the Chief Executive of British Trade International and Her Majesty's Private Secretary about the appointment.
The monarch in those documents expressing her desire that the former prince take on a prominent role in the promotion of national interests, according to the papers.
Yeah, so these documents have been released just months after Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
He hasn't been charged at this stage, but British lawmakers say this release proves there was very little scrutiny given to his appointment to the role of trade envoy, which is something that Keir Starmer is facing criticism over the PM there over his appointment of Peter Mandelson to a very plum gig as well.
So big questions at the moment in the UK around government and the monarchy and high society and these opportunities and roles that are kind of being divvied up and handed out with very little scrutiny. Lawmakers have also accused Mountbatten-Windsor of putting his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein above his duty to his country by forwarding him confidential government reports while in the role.
So that was what that arrest was related to. It
earlier this year but yes still no charges laid in that space don't know if they're building a case don't know if they've found nothing uh he has always maintained that he's innocent of any of these accusations yeah and i mean it's long been speculated that prince andrew was the queen's favorite child so some are saying that you know these documents are more proof of that
