Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Hi, Sasha Barbagat with you. Welcome to this breaking news episode of The Briefing.
Chapter 2: What announcement did Trump make regarding the Iran ceasefire?
Donald Trump has announced the ceasefire between the US and Iran will be extended. In a post to Truth Social, the US president said mediator nation Pakistan had made the request to push out the deadline as Iran puts together a unified proposal.
Chapter 3: What role did Pakistan play in the recent ceasefire negotiations?
Trump says the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will continue as well until this proposal is submitted by Iran.
The ceasefire, which both sides have accused the other of violating, had been due to run out on Wednesday night, Washington time. That's tomorrow morning for us here in Australia. In his post, Trump claimed the Iranian government is seriously fractured and that the further peace talks are still on the cards.
Chapter 4: How has Iran responded to the US's actions and ceasefire extension?
A US delegation had been preparing to fly out to Islamabad for a second round of discussions, but the trip was put on hold overnight our time. At the time of recording, we have not heard a response to this news from Iran, but we know officials hadn't committed to new peace talks.
The country has, however, issued a call to the UN for a condemnation of the US seizing one of its ships over the weekend, saying it constitutes a breach of international law and their fragile ceasefire.
Chapter 5: What updates can we expect regarding the US-Iran situation?
The US has already defended the move, saying the ship tried to evade the naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz. Now, as always, this situation continues to evolve and you can keep up to date on all the latest developments with us here at The Briefing with episodes every day at 6am and 4pm. And we also post breaking news updates to our socials at The Briefing Podcast on Instagram.
