Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
A Listener Production.
Hey, it's Chris Spear with you. Welcome to The Weekend Briefing, where we chat with the humans behind the headlines. And my guest this weekend is someone who a lot of us first met as the breakdancing teenager from Western Sydney, who, with his twin brother and a bunch of other guys, won Australia's Got Talent back in 2010.
He and the group then signed a massive record deal, even though they weren't professional singers, and managed to tour with artists like Janet Jackson, Pitbull and One Direction. They even broke music records along the way.
Hey!
Then, a few years ago, he swapped his boy band badge for a purple skivvy to join one of the most famous kids groups on the planet.
To see you, are you ready for a song? I wear purple and my name is John.
It's John Pearce, or Big Strong John, and in this chat we talk about what he did with his Ozgot Talent Prize money, how he found his way into the Wiggleverse, whether twin telepathy is real, becoming a dad, and his feelings around being known as the Hot Wiggle.
And of course, a little later on in the show is The Weekend List with Sasha Barbagat, where we recommend what to watch, see, do, eat and listen to.

Chapter 2: How did John Pearce transition from busking to winning Australia's Got Talent?
But first, here's my chat with John Pearce. I don't even know how to introduce you because you're wearing the purple, so it is big, strong John sitting opposite me right now. But John Pearce, welcome to The Weekend Briefing. Yeah, thank you. Thanks for having me.
Look, I said to you before, my nephew's going to lose his mind that I'm talking to you, and I'm sure you get that reaction from a lot of people because the kids love The Wiggles. Very common, yeah. Thank you. Appreciate it. I want to start with... We're going to get through a few things today. I want to obviously talk about Justice Crew.
Chapter 3: What experiences did Justice Crew have while touring with major artists?
I was going to say Justice League. Justice League is even better. I was Superman. I don't even know if he's in Justice League. Sorry if I got that wrong. We will talk about Justice Crew, but I want to talk about your upbringing. You were born in the 90s and like a lot of 90s kids, you had a dream of becoming a Power Ranger.
I did, yeah. What colour? How did you know I was a dream of Power Ranger? I love the red Power Ranger. Red and blue were popular between me and my brother, but we loved the green range, green and the white Ranger.
Oh, interesting. What era of Power Ranger were you watching? Were you like a Mighty Morphin? Mighty Morphin, yeah. We're going to geek out now for a second. Okay.
Chapter 4: How did John Pearce become a part of The Wiggles?
So I wanted with all my heart to be a red Power Ranger, but I'm the second born. So I was never allowed to touch anything red. That was my brother's. So a lot of the times I ended up either in the blue or the pink. Not that we had a sister, but somehow I ended up in the pink. The love of the green Ranger. Yeah. I know.
A bit rogue. I know. No, I love the Green Ranger and he had the, you know, the gold, the gold thing.
Oh, that's what it was.
I want to bring it into the Wiggles. What if a big strong John had this? Oh, the armour. Yes. It gave him my superpower. No, I thought it was something cool and he had that flute and he called the dragon.
Yeah. So you're big on the perks. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is what I'm sensing here. You like decking it out a little bit and shooting it up. Talk to me about growing up in the 90s, obviously loving the Power Rangers. Yep, yep. Home life?
Yeah. I had a twin brother, so I had a great childhood. I had someone to play with all the time. Yeah.

Chapter 5: What unique challenges does John face as a dad and a performer?
We loved to race each other on the street. We often played backyard footy. Classic. I had a younger brother and younger sister and an older brother in a two-bedroom house. So we were very close. We had nothing else to do but play sports in the backyard or run around and make a mess of the lounge room. Yeah, we had a quite conservative childhood and I had a great time.
I just remember having a great time.
Yeah. I want to know when it comes to twins. So I went to uni with someone who alleged twin telepathy is very much a real thing.
Yep, it is. Is it? I don't know if it is. We put this to the test. Me and my brother did a video. Yeah, we did a video and there was a trend where you had a door separating two identical twins and someone would yell out like, put a finger up or do a dance move or do something and we would not see each other and do whatever came to mind first. And we got every one of them right.
Oh, dude.
And we didn't rehearse this.
Oh, my God. I gave her so much shit. And I was like, this is not a real thing. You are lying to me. But maybe it is.
Maybe we'll answer something. I don't think we can speak to each other like that. I think we think of things similar. Like, similarly.
like the same we have the same perspective and view on things yeah so if someone wants to say something i think the process of thinking is the same yeah so then talk to me about the transition from your your your running races you guys are like very athletic i understand that was a big part of your childhood and school life and stuff and then becoming dancers and learning how to dance yeah were you both on the same wavelength then you're like oh this is cool let's do it or one led and the other one followed how did that happen

Chapter 6: What was the significance of twin telepathy in John Pearce's upbringing?
They love karaoke. Oh, they do.
Yes.
Yeah, the Magic Mike microphones. It's actually called Magic Microphone. It's weird. Magic Mike is a nickname. Yeah, you can choose the songs you want and they've all got one in their houses. And my mum had one. No way. My auntie had one. What was your mum's go-to song? Do you remember? Ben, Michael Jackson. No way.
Yeah, so karaoke is a part of the culture and it's fun and most Filipinos can sing and there are a few that my mum is probably one of them that couldn't really sing in tune. Oh, sorry, mum. She didn't care. Like, they care. They just have fun. That's what it's all about. But yeah, so the singing and dancing came a little bit later. We watched a movie called You Got Served, which came out in 2005.
It's a breakdancing movie. And me and my brother and a bunch of friends went and watched it and we copied every move in that movie. And we taught routines from that movie to our school friends and made a crew at school. And that's what started us into hip-hop dancing. And then... we actually went to dance competitions from there just for fun.
And we met another group called Psalms, and that's the two groups. Our high school group, athletes, and Psalms combined to form Justice Crew.
That's where it came from. Okay, so then Justice Crew is formed. You guys are still self-taught dancers, which the way y'all dance, let me tell you. So, okay, a bit of controversy. I watched you guys on Australia's Got Talent. I watched you win Australia's Got Talent.
You guys moved in a way that looked like you'd been dancing your whole lives, but that was self-taught, which is incredibly impressive. Yes, self-taught, yeah. Talk to me about the journey to Australia's Got Talent. I understand it was your mum who nudged you after seeing the prize money. Yes, yes. You're right there.
So we had a dance crew in school. So we formed Justice Crew. So we were a new group. It was 2010. Nine, maybe. We tried to make a routine with this new group called Justice Crew to compete in the World Hip Hop Champs in Las Vegas. So we had to compete in a local competition, the Australian Hip Hop Champs, which we placed first and qualified. Great. So we went over to Las Vegas, self-funded.

Chapter 7: How did Justice Crew's journey shape their identity as performers?
And just opportunities do arise and just being open to take them sometimes. Whether it's not a clear destiny or where you want it to be, sometimes it's not clear where you're supposed to be. And I believe in the power of the universe and things all happen for a reason.
Talk to me about then becoming... I don't know if it's offensive to call you guys this, but it was like Australia's top boy band group. I don't know what's the proper title. No, no. At the time, though, you guys were the group that became a boy band.
It felt weird at the time. We didn't like it because I felt like... boy band felt so young and we were like, I was, we were the youngest, we were 20 and the oldest was 26, which is pretty reasonable for a boy band. Yeah, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC.
I think it did feel like we're imposter syndrome because we were like a breakdancing group that became this music artist signed to Sony and it didn't feel natural, but I guess we just ended up owning it and just doing us and just being there for each other and we all kept each other grounded through this whole process and just have fun with it and we had fun. You had fun. We learned a lot. Yeah.
And yeah, it was an introductory to the music industry. And I guess we had no expectation on what it was supposed to be like. And we lapped it up. We had fun.
You smashed Aria Records. Yeah, I know. Aria Records, I think previously held by like Savage Garden and Gautier, which had the biggest song on the planet at that point. Crazy. Yeah, it's insane. To it with some huge names. Yeah, I know.
When you say it, I'm reliving it all. Like with Kesha. We toured with Kesha and Pitbull. Pitbull. Yeah, across America. Like Janet Jackson, I read.
Janet Jackson. I forgot about Janet Jackson, yet we did. What was that like? Tell me about Janet Jackson just for one moment and then we can go on to something else.
She was like a queen. Oh, man. Yeah, we walked into the room and she was standing right there. This is when we just got our opportunity to meet her and say hello and get a photo. And it just, we all... didn't know what to say. Yeah. I felt like this is the closest you'll get to Michael Jackson. Legit.

Chapter 8: What insights does John Pearce share about the impact of fame?
I've never seen a wiggle doing push-ups and doing a wiggle. Correct. I think that's the contrast. I think it's so different.
Yeah, well, I also think it's a lot of maybe young girls who might have had crushes on you when you were in the Justice crew and then they're like, oh, he's now keeping my kid quiet while it's crying. Again, they thank you for your service.
I very appreciate that too, the Justice crew fans that now have children. Very grateful, thank you. That's crazy though, right?
You've been in the media or at least you've been in the entertainment industry for that long. That's crazy that you've grown up but also your fans in some way have all grown up.
Very scary that life is just going. It's just happening. And I still feel like I'm 15 years old inside. I feel young. I feel the way I think. Still a child. But, you know, life is moving on and everyone's getting older.
And I'm very grateful for the people that have followed my journey and have been there and also for the new families and everyone that's followed the new series, the new generation of The Wiggles.
Well, I feel like The Wiggles, at least of late, the diversity of the Wiggles is something that can't be underestimated and the way that the Wiggles have represented so many different cultures. My former job, I worked at a place called the Greek Herald.
Yeah, wow.
They lost their mind when you guys dropped your Greek series and I can tell you there is not a single Greek family with kids that has not put on what Anthony and Lucia really lead, but you guys are all part of it. There's a lot of nods to different cultures in the Wiggles. Do people talk about that with you guys? Is that something that comes through?
