Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

2.63 - 27.593 Natarsha Belling

a listener production. Hi, Natasha Belling with you and welcome to the afternoon edition of The Briefing. Coming up in our deep dive, Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party has made history, shaking up Australia's political landscape after winning the by-election in Farrah over the weekend. We speak with Senator Hanson on what's next and why she's ready to govern.

0

28.113 - 51.334 Natarsha Belling

But first, let's check the afternoon headlines this Monday, the 11th of May. One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce is warning the party is now looking at winning votes in Western Sydney after candidate David Farley won the Farah by-election over the weekend. One Nation won the rural New South Wales seat, which has been held by the coalition for more than 70 years.

0

51.314 - 68.19 Natarsha Belling

The by-election was forced after local MP Susan Lee resigned from politics when she was dumped as opposition leader. Mr Joyce warning the party is focusing on a number of other key seats now, including Western Sydney, in the lead-up to the 2028 federal election.

0

68.63 - 76.037 Barnaby Joyce

We are very much in the mind for Western suburbs of Sydney. I was talking to people from the Western suburbs of Sydney last night, both on the ground.

0

Chapter 2: What recent political changes did One Nation experience in Australia?

76.658 - 79.06 Barnaby Joyce

To be quite frank, I was even talking to potential candidates.

0

79.833 - 97.673 Natarsha Belling

High-profile media boss Anthony Catalano did not appear in person in court today because of concerns over his mental health. The 59-year-old appeared via video link for a short hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court on charges of assaulting and threatening to kill his wife.

0

97.653 - 115.695 Natarsha Belling

Mr Catalano's lawyer told the court his client had expressed remorse and was on drugs at the time he allegedly assaulted his wife in March. Mr Catalano also recently attended a 28-day rehabilitation program. The matter is set to return to court in June.

116.198 - 136.504 Natarsha Belling

US President Donald Trump has rejected the latest peace proposal from Iran, taking to social media to say of Iran's plan, quote, I don't like it, totally unacceptable. President Trump's comment reportedly came just hours after Iran sent a counter-proposal to the US. and it extends the uncertainty around the Middle East.

0

137.085 - 157.249 Natarsha Belling

The US president will be travelling to China later this week for a two-day visit, where he'll meet with President Xi Jinping. The two are expected to discuss Iran, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and nuclear weapons. Australian pharmaceutical giant CSL has recorded its biggest one-day loss on record.

157.73 - 180.182 Natarsha Belling

The company's share price is down around 17% in just a single day, meaning that the stock has fallen by almost 60% over the past 12 months. The losses follow revised revenue predictions for the company and the ongoing fallout from the Middle East. And Delta Goodrum has dropped a sneak peek of her performance ahead of the semi-final for Eurovision.

180.343 - 186.012 Barnaby Joyce

Welcome to Vienna, Delta Goodrum and the delegation of Australia.

188.796 - 210.879 Natarsha Belling

Delta is set to perform her recent hit single Eclipse in front of a global audience of more than 160 million viewers. She'll take to the stage early Friday morning, our time for semi-final two. Now it's time to get into our deep dive with Senator Pauline Hanson on One Nation's historic win in the Farah by-election on Saturday.

211.46 - 228.167 Natarsha Belling

Senator Hanson says the voters have spoken and now the party has its sights on other key seats with a stern warning for the major parties. Senator Hanson, thanks so much for joining us. How do you feel after the election result on the weekend with the by-election in Farah?

Chapter 3: What are Barnaby Joyce's comments on One Nation's future in Western Sydney?

228.4 - 245.729 Pauline Hanson

Well, I think the same as people in Farah, jubilant, excited and thrilled with the result that we got. We had a 32% swing towards us, which is extraordinary, absolutely extraordinary for the seat to have been in the hands of the coalition government for 77 years.

0

246.75 - 254.323 Natarsha Belling

What do you think was the deciding vote for people in Farah? We know rural people are broken right now. What do you think was top of the agenda for them?

0

254.742 - 273.719 Pauline Hanson

Well, it was a factor of many things. I think they feel completely ignored by the major political parties. They promise us all the time nothing happens. What's happening in the electorate is the water issue. Now, the Murray-Darling Basin is a huge issue. The farmers are not getting the water that they need. The buyback system that's happening, it needs a full investigation.

0

274.119 - 294.125 Pauline Hanson

We've said we will call for a Royal Commission into it, which is desperately needed. The cost of living is another driving factor. So people having... issues with that, but that's all around the country. The other one is healthcare. In the electorate, the Albury Hospital is run down. It's passed. It's used by date.

0

294.285 - 312.61 Pauline Hanson

There's talk about putting money into it to bring it up to date, or there's also the report of a new hospital. The government's broke. Everyone's broke. You're not going to get the half a billion dollars to build a new hospital at this time. So it's about working with the community. The best way to move forward, do we actually

312.877 - 332.838 Pauline Hanson

you know, put money into it to give them the services and, of course, the beds that they need and try and get the country out of this debt that we have. It's just a combination of a lot of things. I spoke to a farmer there. He said, I'm going under. I'm going to have to sell. He said, I don't want to, but I have to. So it's a combination of so many things.

332.898 - 344.088 Pauline Hanson

They've just lost faith in the government, this net zero, the restrictions, the control that the government's putting over the farming sector. It's not on anymore. People have had enough.

345.149 - 366.677 Natarsha Belling

Senator Hanson, many of your critics would argue that One Nation may have done incredibly well in this by-election, but you don't have strict policies on how you're going to make a difference to make sure hospitals are right in rural areas, to make sure we have affordable, reliable energy. What would your response be to that, that there's no devil in the detail with your policy?

367.062 - 376.153 Pauline Hanson

Well, I think people have failed to go to the website and look at my policies, which there's about 29 or 30 up at the moment. I'll be releasing my gas policy early next week as well.

Chapter 4: What allegations are facing media boss Anthony Catalano?

405.627 - 427.533 Pauline Hanson

So you tell me, has the major political parties got the policies that are working for us? And the answer is no. So I criticise One Nation. If you haven't really gone to have a look at the policies, what I intend to do, to bring about, to change the way it is now, the first thing I do is cut the mass migration. That's what's destroyed the housing sector and the rental accommodation.

0

427.874 - 444.465 Pauline Hanson

Common sense will tell you that. My policy has been to get out of the net zero. Rise in electricity costs, shut down over 1,400 industries and manufacturing over the last few years, and 50,000 small businesses have gone insolvent. So tell me, has their policies worked? And I'll tell you, it hasn't.

0

445.085 - 463.708 Natarsha Belling

Senator, in regards to you just mentioned just then about migration, Barnaby Joyce has been out on a media blitz today saying, watch out, we're coming for the seats of Western Sydney. We know so many of those residents there are immigrants. How do you balance that by being tough on immigration, yet getting the migrant vote in these crucial seats?

0

464.178 - 474.388 Pauline Hanson

This is where a lot of people underestimate where the support from One Nation is coming, is from a lot of the migrants that are here in the country. Why do you think they left their countries to come here? They want that better way of life.

0

475.049 - 496.307 Pauline Hanson

Our country has gone down so much, especially in the last five to 10 years, due to these policies overpopulating the country, which we can't deal with the infrastructure. And that's why people are saying, well, they can see this country becoming like the place that they left. And that's why they're supporting One Nation. And that's what's happened in the UK.

496.688 - 519.042 Pauline Hanson

Why do you think even Nigel Farage was going on about migration? That's why reform has won over 1,400 seats in the UK and most of these are from the ethnic vote. So you're underestimating the ethnic vote out there. These people see themselves as Australians and love this country and want a future for their generations, for their kids as well.

519.022 - 538.532 Natarsha Belling

Senator Hanson, you've spoken today about the arrogance of both sides of politics here, the arrogance of both parties, the Coalition and the current Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. I mentioned before you're going to make a play for the Western Sydney seats. Do you think they're underestimating the power of One Nation and how many people will support your party?

539.002 - 562.967 Pauline Hanson

It's not the power of one nation. They're underestimating the people themselves that are so angry and have had to wear the policies that have been implemented by both the major political parties over the last 10, 20 years. That's what they're angry about. I'm offering them something different. The sheer arrogance of the major political parties is their attitude that the elitist attitude is

563.875 - 575.675 Pauline Hanson

that the people, they're the only ones entitled to govern in this country. Well, people want to change. And this is what's happening. There's a people's movement that's happening. They want change.

Chapter 5: How did Donald Trump respond to Iran's peace proposal?

576.116 - 583.624 Pauline Hanson

They want their politicians to represent them. not doing everything they can to ensure their security of their own seats on the floor of parliament.

0

584.145 - 600.767 Natarsha Belling

Senator, the Prime Minister has been quoted today in the media accusing the Liberal and National parties of legitimising One Nation, saying it was a big mistake that they led to then thousands of voters in Farah switching their allegiance to you and to One Nation. What's your response to the Prime Minister's comments?

0

601.658 - 622.255 Pauline Hanson

One Nation was legitimised long before this. You know, I've got four senators. The last election, we doubled our numbers in the Senate. We've actually, you know, outpolled the others in even South Australia, outpolled the Liberal Party. I just saw seven members elected and sworn into Parliament last Tuesday. They're both scared, have no doubt, the Labor Party is scared about this.

0

622.335 - 644.197 Pauline Hanson

They didn't stand a candidate because, you know why? The Prime Minister was too scared to stand a Labor candidate in the Faro by-election because he knew they wouldn't even pull the 15% that they got last time. So the whole fact is Labor allows the Greens to legitimise them because they wouldn't hold as many seats as they have without the Greens' preferences.

0

644.758 - 662.584 Pauline Hanson

So they're all very concerned about the vote that One Nation is getting. So I think it's gained. It proves my point. The sheer arrogance, because it legitimises us, we have been legitimised. I won my seat in 2016. So the people voted for me 10 years ago.

662.624 - 677.262 Natarsha Belling

You've had an incredibly challenging career. We know you've spent time in prison. We know you've been attacked by both sides of Parliament that made it incredibly personal. How did you feel over the weekend for you personally, winning FARA?

677.545 - 701.033 Pauline Hanson

It was, I think I've been vindicated by a lot. I'll just tell you, my imprisonment was terrible. due to false charges being laid against me, which was started by Tony Abbott and a slush fund. And then the Premier, Labor Premier of Queensland changed the legislation from a fine or six month jail term to make it seven years retrospective. So both of those have been responsible.

701.393 - 719.793 Pauline Hanson

Then after 11 weeks and maximum security on third appeal, my sentence was quashed. So I just want people to know that, you know, you're just saying I've been in prison and people have to understand why I was imprisoned, because I was a threat to the major political parties. So, yes, it has been a rollercoaster ride for me.

719.813 - 741.657 Pauline Hanson

The litigation that's been thrown at me over the years, the court cases that I have had to battle, you know, before the human rights, discrimination, everything that's been brought against me. But I stood true to my values, what I believe needs to be done for this country, because the people out there need a fair go. They need to be stopped being, you know, trolling their throat all the time

Chapter 6: What caused CSL's significant stock drop recently?

741.957 - 761.247 Pauline Hanson

You know, they're not a cash cow for the government to just waste and spend the money wherever they want to. There has to be more accountability and consultation and bring the people on the journey with you. And that's why I want to consult and talk to the people. You know, it's their country. It's our country. We're only here as servants for the people to represent them.

0

761.748 - 778.29 Pauline Hanson

But it doesn't appear to be happening that way. That's why people are screaming out for change. They're in fear for their safety. They're in fear for their kids and future generations. They're in fear that, you know, are they ever going to own their own home? There's so many factors in all this.

0

778.31 - 793.227 Natarsha Belling

Senator, for you, would you do a deal with the Coalition? We know over the weekend, Angus Taylor has been decimated. The Coalition, the Liberals, the Nationals have been decimated, especially with the rise of One Nation. Would you do any form of deal with the Coalition?

0

793.628 - 814.741 Pauline Hanson

Well, you know what? I saw Tim Wilson come across on TV and he said, we will never, never, never, ever, ever do a coalition with One Nation. But I tell you what, Tim Wilson is only there in his seat because of One Nation's preferences. I know at that election he put us last. He's only there because he came down to the wire with 100 votes to win that seat.

0

815.121 - 818.971 Pauline Hanson

That's the sheer arrogance I'm talking about. They're not prepared.

Chapter 7: How is Delta Goodrem preparing for her Eurovision performance?

819.372 - 839.801 Pauline Hanson

I'm not the enemy. If you really are conservative, really care about this country, the one that's done the most damage is the Labor, Greens, Teals. And yet he's talking with that language. Well, I tell Tim Wilson, I'll never, ever, ever consider giving you preferences again at the next election. So they need to change their attitude towards One Nation.

0

839.841 - 851.679 Pauline Hanson

You know what, Natasha, is that One Nation is going to go for government. I'm not going to keep playing the tail on the dog and thinking that I need to be there to prop up the coalition government.

0

852.26 - 873.906 Pauline Hanson

I'm going to prove to the people that we have the policies to pull this country out of the mess, to pay down our debt, to make people prosperous, to get the younger generation pride in our nation, who we are as a people, as a country, and give them hope for the future because too many people come up to me and say, you're our last hope. I don't know if you realise how...

0

874.274 - 896.333 Pauline Hanson

That makes me feel, but also it's also a responsibility that I have to try and do the best that I can for the people and get the right people around me. And people will say, oh, well, she hasn't got the knowledge or experience. No one has full knowledge and experience of everything. But what it tells me is I get the right people around me that do. And that's what One Nation is about.

0

896.414 - 908.587 Natarsha Belling

Senator, I think it was pretty clear over the weekend that you had a resounding victory in the Faribault election. Some critics argue that people that vote for One Nation are racist. What would you say to that?

909.608 - 928.892 Pauline Hanson

They're really, that's all they've ever thrown at me over the years, but they can't define what racist is. Is wanting to protect your country with overpopulation. Is, you know, being concerned about the type of people bringing in the country have no regard, don't want to assimilate in our nation. you know, and to call it out for what it is.

929.433 - 952.476 Pauline Hanson

Do people feel safe in our nation with some of the other ones that have migrated here? I'll call it out for what it is. That's not been racism. That's been a true leader and prepared to call it out for what it is. These other people who want to throw that barb at me have no idea what they're talking about. They can't argue or debate with me on my policies and why they won't work.

952.827 - 958.233 Pauline Hanson

So that's one way I disregard it. And I look at the people out there that are supporting One Nation.

Chapter 8: What does Senator Pauline Hanson think about her election win?

958.253 - 969.024 Pauline Hanson

We're growing in numbers, in our membership, in our vote, in our support. So are you going to tag all Australians as racist who support One Nation? I think they're a fool if they do.

0

969.084 - 978.714 Natarsha Belling

Senator, it is certainly a fascinating time in Australian politics. We really appreciate your time. We know you have a very, very busy schedule. Thank you for joining us.
