Chapter 1: What fertility challenges are addressed in this episode?

0.959 - 10.108 Sophie Hallwright

Just a heads up in this episode, we'll be touching on some fertility challenges. So if this topic hits too close to home, we totally understand if you need to sit this one out or proceed with care.

14.358 - 27.021 Victoria Harris

Hi everyone, today's episode was meant to be about what does it mean for women, the economy and all of our financial planning if we look at the idea of having kids earlier in life or later in life.

27.803 - 38.442 Sophie Hallwright

We came across a story that we were originally going to cover in the Curve Weekly and essentially the headline was that US birth rates have hit a record low in 2025 and

But what's quite interesting is that while there's all these media headlines that are talking about the fact that, you know, women are having less babies and we've got this fertility crisis and there's a whole lot of fear mongering going on. Actually, if you look at the statistics, 88% of women who are 45 today are mothers. And that's actually more than 20 years ago.

So today's conversation originally, we were going to unpack a lot of these statistics. where we're going to talk about the financial implications that this can have. So whether you choose to have kids earlier or later, because there's so much to consider with this conversation in terms of personal finances, financial planning, as well as looking at the whole economy and what's happening.

84.319 - 98.557 Sophie Hallwright

And we recorded this conversation this week. We edited it and we were really excited about putting it out in all honesty. And then Vic sent a note this morning to our team Slack saying, And it said, guys, I'm feeling a little bit worried about this episode.

Chapter 2: Why did the hosts decide to pause the episode on fertility?

98.698 - 121.397 Sophie Hallwright

I feel like perhaps we haven't done it justice. And so rather than making a decision in the echo chamber of the curve, we sent this episode to a bunch of people we really trusted. And that was mothers. People have had difficulty with fertility, people of different ages, and what came back was really interesting. And I'm so glad that we paused before putting this out.

What it made us really realise is that Vic and I have a specific perspective, experience, angle to bring to this conversation, but... We're also two mid to late 30s women who don't have kids, and we're both in heterosexual relationships.

0

139.093 - 158.472 Sophie Hallwright

We've both focused on our career and not had kids yet for various reasons, not just because we're focused on our career, but because we hadn't met the right person until later in life. And What we realized was actually to have this conversation and to do it justice, we really need input from the community and from other people who are in all sorts of different dynamics.

Because to truly talk about this conversation, like, yes, we've got a huge amount of research. I mean, our prep sheet is like, God, how long is it? It's like eight, eight pages long. That's kind of just the nature of it.

content and podcasting we really try and make these things timely to talk about them when they're in the news but we also want to make sure that the quality of what we're putting out is up there and this conversation with just Vic and I talking about it would not have been that so we would really love to ask anyone who is listening who perhaps has considered or gone through adoption who is in a same-sex relationship either considering or not considering kids and the reasons why you

197.958 - 218.282 Sophie Hallwright

Anyone who, for fertility reasons, hasn't been able to have kids or experienced miscarriages, perhaps chosen by choice not to for financial reasons. Anything that you have experienced or someone you know has experienced that might give this conversation a more well-rounded perspective, we would love to hear from you.

218.322 - 241.279 Sophie Hallwright

We have the hotline, the Curve hotline, which is where you can leave a voice note. We can totally make these anonymous. You can also send us a DM on Instagram. You could also send us an email, hello at thecurveplatform.com. We would really welcome any and all perspectives, thoughts on this conversation so that we can make sure it is as educational as possible. So thank you in advance.

241.259 - 261.251 Sophie Hallwright

If you could send this episode to anyone you know who might be able to offer some kind of insight, that would also be great. So thank you for bearing with us while today is not a normal episode. And we will be back from Monday with the Curve Weekly. But in the meantime, we will continue to work on this episode and make sure when we put it out that everyone is really happy with it. So thank you.

261.752 - 263.757 Sophie Hallwright

And we will be back in your ears on Monday.
