Chapter 2: What recent report on media consumption in Australia was discussed?
You're not helping our normie credentials by suggesting that you had a skip in your step because of a digital news report. But same.
But listen, I am a nerd about the media landscape, but I actually was long before I was even a journalist. And I've been reading this report for years because it's such an interesting insight into how people across the country are getting their news, what they think about the news that they're receiving, and kind of the future of the landscape generally.
Why is this particular report this sort of holy grail when it comes to the media landscape?
Just before I answer that, just some quick context. I hollered across the office to Elliot and I said, do you want to do a podcast with me about a new report on digital news? And he looked me dead in the eye and you said, let me do this one. I love this report.
I do. It's true.
But you're right. It is the kind of podcast. foremost authoritative report on how everyone in our country and across the world is consuming media. And for us media nerds, it's obviously super interesting. But I think the reason why we want to cover it today is that it has implications for everyone. everyone, for all Australians. It's not just for us who are in the media.
I mean, it certainly shapes a lot of our decisions, but I think it's just an interesting snapshot nonetheless. So this one is, as we said, not a one-off report. This is the 12th edition of the Digital News Report. So it is a global survey that's run by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, which is out of Oxford University. And so that uses data from across 48 countries.
We here in Australia are one of those 48 countries and here the University of Canberra is the partner who runs it. So we call it the University of Canberra Digital News Report, but if you happen to come across it elsewhere, it's the Reuters Digital Report as well.
And before we talk about what was interesting, I do just want to make a note about methodology because I think in the news there's been a lot of questions, a lot of headlines about methodology Polling. Polling and research and how it's done. And I know that on this pod we've spoken, for example, about One Nation and people have questions about how that polling's done.

Chapter 3: Why has young people's trust in news significantly increased?
All right, today's tidbit is about a little-known actress. Her name is Cate Blanchett. Have you heard of her?
I have once or twice heard of her.
Do you know what this tidbit is?
I think I vaguely saw her mentioned in a pitch meeting, but I didn't follow up on it.
Yeah, so basically she's been announced as a new visiting professor at the University of Oxford.
Wait, can I just say I'm loving that this is just like a professor-themed podcast. We're just going for universities today.
Oh, true. Yeah. And actually... And we mentioned Oxford at the beginning. Yes, it's all connected. That's so true.
Everything was thought out here.
So she's going to teach contemporary theatre at St Catherine's College throughout the 2026-2027 academic year. So she actually joins a list of famous names, including Sir Ian McKellen. And when she was talking about the appointment, she said she was, quote, looking forward to beginning this creative rumpus.
