Chapter 1: What were the major highlights of the 2026 Grammy Awards?
The 2026 Grammy saw major wins for artists like Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga, and also served up an impressive number of live performances. But beyond the spectacle and the awarding of Grammy statuettes, the night also highlighted the bridge between headlines about immigration policy and ICE and how music often defines our most challenging cultural moment.
Hello and welcome to USA Today's The Excerpt. I'm Dana Taylor. Today is Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026. Joining me now to discuss the biggest night in music is USA Today national music reporter Melissa Ruggieri. It's good to have you here, Melissa. Thank you so much. Before we talk about his acceptance speech, let's talk about Bad Bunny's historic night at the Grammys. This year really belonged.
to Bad Bunny, right?
It really did. I mean, you know, there was hope for Lady Gaga to maybe win one of the first of her three top awards, which she's never won before in record album or song of the year.
But I think everybody knew going into it that this was going to be a cultural year and that Bad Bunny, who absolutely deserved to win, was going to become the first artist in Grammy history to have an all Spanish album win album of the year. And the funny part is the last time that that might have happened was for his last album or his album two albums ago. So
So, you know, it was going to be Bad Bunny one way or the other, I think.
It wasn't surprising that he addressed immigration rights from the stage. Bad Bunny made a passionate cultural statement that is, of course, part of a larger cultural moment. Tell me about his acceptance speech, Melissa.
Well, the first speech when he got up there, he was very passionate about talking about ICE and the community and, you know, telling people, look, these aren't aliens. These aren't savages. We are human beings. And I thought that he stuck a really unifying tone when he said, you know, the only thing that comes out of hate is more hate and that he's about love.
And I think the people who, you know, have raised the controversy about the Super Bowl halftime performance show that we'll see him in this coming Sunday, I think are going to see some more of that on Sunday, too. I think that his whole thing right now is unity. And, you know, when you listen to his music, his music is fun.

Chapter 2: How did Bad Bunny make history at the Grammys?
And everybody's pretty tight lipped about it because they wanted to be surprised. You know, last year with Kendrick, I don't think anyone was expecting to see Serene Williams. You know, SZA might have been a little more expected. But with Bad Bunny, there's a whole bunch of people that he could have. He could, you know, Cardi B, people that he's worked with over the years.
Daddy Yankee, his, you know, his big mentor as far as music. So I think we're going to see a lot of people that are going to come out, maybe even Shakira. I mean, people sort of forget sometimes that Bad Bunny actually did do the Super Bowl a few years ago when he popped up with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez the year they did it. So
You know, it'd be kind of fun to see Shakira repay the favor and come out. So I think we will see people. But no, we don't know yet who any of them might be.
Speaking of last year's headliner, Kendrick Lamar, he also made Grammy history this year, right?
He sure did. He is now the most awarded rapper in Grammy history. He has 27 wins. He surpassed Jay-Z's 25. And five more awards for Kendrick. You know, he was the leading nominee. He came in with nine. He actually only could have won eight because he was nominated twice in the same category. And, you know, unless he tied with himself, he was only going to win eight.
But to win five of those is really incredible because he had such a huge year last year. And typically what we see in the Grammys are these cyclical things. You know, an artist has a big year and then the next year you don't really hear from them much, much like with Taylor and Beyonce. And then, you know, maybe two years later, three years later, they're going to come back.
But for Kendrick to do this back to back and SZA actually came backstage and talked to us and was asked about the longevity of Luther and how, you know, the song had come out a pretty long time ago and the fact that it's still, you know, being awarded and recognized now.
And that really just kind of speaks to the durability of the song and the fact that, you know, so many people loved it, that it was still able to be in social and public consciousness all these months later.
As the young female pop artists continue to rule the roost from Sabrina Carpenter to this year's Best New Artist winner, the lovely Olivia Deen, some of them have an important element in common though, and that's a massive social media platform. Is this the moment where we're seeing the music industry fully embrace social media stars?

Chapter 3: What cultural statements did Bad Bunny make during his acceptance speech?
actively working much anymore. But I said, you know, if you were going to sign anybody today, who out there is someone you would sign? And he didn't even hesitate. And he said, Olivia Dean. He said, if she auditioned for me, I would sign her right now. And I said, why is that? And he said, are you coming to my party Saturday? I said, I am. And he said, she's good and you'll see that.
So, you know, everybody's looking for something different, but I think someone like Olivia certainly has so much, you know, flair to her at such a young age. And Sabrina, you know, Sabrina is sort of the Olivia Rodrigo of the past year as far as the preteen girl following and, you know, even even older than that, going into, you know, 20 something year old women.
So, yeah, I mean, I think because the Internet is such a way for them to connect with their fans so quickly that that's the outlet that a lot of them are going because they could say whatever they want. They don't need an intermediary like a reporter to get the word out. And, you know, fans feel connected to them that way.
The Ozzy Osbourne tribute brought out some heavy hitters, also pyrotechnics. Who showed up for The Prince of Darkness, Melissa?
The Prince of Darkness was well-fetted the entire weekend. He also had a tribute at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy gala with Jelly Roll and MGK performing for him. And the Osbournes, Sharon, Jack, and Kelly were in the audience there, just as they were at the Grammys on Sunday. And Post Malone really kind of took the lead on this Grammys one.
But, you know, he had some help, you know, with Slash and Chad Smith and the Red Hot Chili Peppers on drums. You know, all you want to do is rock really hard. When it comes to remembering Ozzy, because that's what Ozzy would have wanted. And I, you know, being that I was at both events at Clive's party and at the Grammys and seeing the reaction of Sharon and Jack and Kelly.
I mean, that's the thing that really makes you know that they so appreciate that. How many artists in the music community remember Ozzy and loved Ozzy and Youngblood, especially who won a Grammy for his performance from Ozzy's big concert that they had, the Black Sabbath concert last July, shortly before Ozzy died.
And Youngblood has really become another part of the Osbourne family, as has Jelly Roll. You know, he came backstage and talked about how the Osbourne kids call him their brother now. And Sharon's a straight up gangster was his quote.
about sharon so you know it's just really cool to see how many artists revered ozzy and how you know i don't think he's going to be forgotten anytime soon that's for sure and then lauren hill led tributes to two of the artists we lost last year how did that go That was an amazing moment as well. You know, when I'm in that Grammy press room, there's a lot going on. There's artists coming back.

Chapter 4: What can we expect from Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime performance?
She's not just about being outlandish. She really has a voice and she really has substance. And now she's at the point in her career that both of those things we see all the time. And I thought her performance was actually one of my favorites of the night. So really happy to see her there, too. I just wish she had won one of those big three awards finally.
And then Bruno Mars, who performed twice on Grammy night. Are we calling this a comeback?
Absolutely. Although in some ways he didn't really go anywhere. You know, he's got this big album coming out. He's got the stadium tour that kicks off in April in Las Vegas. But Las Vegas is a place that's been very good to Bruno the last few years because he's had a residency there for several years.
He has a new club that opened, I think, opened about a year and a half, two years ago at the Bellagio. So, you know, Bruno has been out there and he's also, you know, obviously been doing a lot of collaborations with Rosé and then with Lady Gaga last year. They won for Die With a Smile. So it's not like he really went anywhere from the public consciousness.
But the fact that he's back now as solo Bruno for the first time in almost a decade and he's just a consummate entertainer. You know, this is this is a guy who can you know, he's he's. You could see the soul elements in what he does with Silk Sonic and just even in his new songs.
And I'm really excited about his new album that's coming out and just to see what the stadium production is going to be. I think we got a little taste of that.
And then finally, since I have you, Taylor Swift's The Life of a Showgirl. That came out too late for a Grammy run this year. I know Harry Styles has new music out. It's early, but there's so much coming this year that's going to generate Grammy buzz in 2027. What are you watching out for?
Well, Harry definitely. And I do think that next year's Grammys are going to be really, really big on star power. I think Kendrick might take some time off. So we might not see as much Kendrick next year. But with Harry's album coming out, who knows what Taylor is doing?
You know, she may very well be getting married as the plan is, but that also could mean she drops four albums as well because we know how prolific she is. And Beyonce's also, you know, been talking about the next installment of which she's been working on these last several years. So, It would be really, really cool next year to see if we've got, you know, Harry, Beyonce and Taylor.
