Chapter 1: What does it mean to work hard?

0.209 - 16.08 Dan Martell

I know this might offend you, but you're not actually working hard. Even if you're putting in 14 hours a day, seven days a week, like I was when I was building my first company, that's not hard work. That's just work. Now you might be asking yourself a question. What's hard work? It's not doing the thing you already know how to do.

And it's the kind of hard work that's allowed me to go from broke 17 year old to a multimillionaire today. So I'm going to share with you what it actually means to work hard. Welcome to the Martell Method. I went from rehab at 17 to building a $100 million empire and being a Wall Street Journal bestselling author.

Why am I not working hard?

0

47.654 - 65.319 Dan Martell

You're probably not working hard because you're scared that you're gonna have to sacrifice the things you enjoy doing, which is watching TV, hanging out with friends, playing video games, scrolling on social media, lazing around. Those things will have to go. People ask me all the time, it's like, what have you done to be successful? It's actually what I don't do.

65.859 - 79.603 Dan Martell

I don't sit around and do nothing. I don't smoke vapes. I don't gamble. I don't watch sports. I don't watch the news. I don't do a lot of stuff that created the space for me to actually win. Most people don't wanna work hard because it means actually killing off those things that are distracting them.

79.823 - 99.555 Dan Martell

The way I think about it is make a list of all the things that you say, I'm not willing to sacrifice. Those are the reasons why you will not win at the level that you want to, if you have big ambitions for your life. Don't tell me you have crazy big dreams of being mega wealthy and then act small. Those things do not correlate. That's why people are scared to work hard.

100.296 - 118.151 Dan Martell

Or they might've worked hard in the past and it burnt them out because they didn't have the right psychology to deal with that level of stress. Maybe they were under stress because they were working on something that they didn't even wanna do. See, when I'm pursuing a goal that I'm after, my mission, my crusade, then it doesn't feel hard. It doesn't feel like work.

118.292 - 129.439 Dan Martell

It feels like I'm building the building blocks to actually achieve. So don't allow past moments where you felt the pressure to stop you from stepping up again today.

Chapter 2: Why are you not working hard?

711.719 - 721.985 Dan Martell

Now you have to do the work first. So if you don't feel like you're good with your money, you're not good at selling, you're not good at marketing, like go work on those skills. Become more valuable to the market, to the world.

0

722.665 - 740.33 Dan Martell

So start with a skill and decide to be best in class, not good, not okay, but actually going deep and saying, in the grand scheme of things, I wanna be one of the top people in the world. And you might be part of a thousand other people, but if there's a hundred thousand people in that market, then you're gonna be the 1%.

741.81 - 757.874 Dan Martell

Striving for that, making that decision, that's how you prioritize what you need to go work on that will be hard, that will make you more valuable. And then from there, the world will show you where you're not free. Wherever you have emotional issues,

0

758.254 - 780.968 Dan Martell

Wherever you have emotional frustration with the world, it could be in the relationship side, in the team member side, with your family members, with your community. It could be investors. It could be wherever it is. If you have emotional response to interacting with other people, that is the world showing you uniquely where you're stuck. And that's hard work. That is the work, all caps.

That is where you have to decide, am I willing to put my ego aside to go humble myself, to become better so I can remove this from my life? Because I'll tell you what will happen. If you actually are lucky enough to be successful, that behavior, that emotional shrapnel that's present when you run into those situation will be the downfall of you keeping that success.

803.271 - 809.398 Dan Martell

I've seen too many people get wildly wealthy only to lose it all because they didn't do the work.

810.319 - 827.168 Dan Martell

sabotaging their decisions, by showing up, drinking too much and getting in the car, by having a mistress, by fooling around on their wife, by screaming or overreacting in a meeting and causing key people to quit on them, having investors they've chosen to work with where they knew inside that they shouldn't take their money.

827.548 - 836.933 Dan Martell

They took it anyways because they didn't have the self-worth and determination. And that person takes their company from them. I've seen every permutation because they didn't do the work.

837.335 - 840.658 John Smith

You're already rich. Why do you keep working hard?
