Chapter 1: What are Michael McKenry's thoughts on Konnor Griffin's chances of making the Pirates roster?

1.212 - 37.185

Fly ball to left field. Michael McHenry! The fort! Oh, baby! Your buckles lead it! Unbelievable! Wow! His first in the big leagues! They're going to bring the house down! I like the music limits. I truly do. It's time for Michael McHenry. The fort. Fan Twitter brought to you by South Hills Kia, Peters Township. Visit them at SouthHillsKia.net. And there he is.

37.506 - 59.687

You can watch on YouTube and see Michael McHenry. And I'm going to ask you the same question I ask every week because it's getting later and later, which means closer and closer to the opener, Michael. Is Connor McGriffin? Connor McGriffin. Oh, my God. Connor Griffin going to be on this team. I thought you were going to say he was going to be on the White House card. Anyway.

0

59.853 - 81.22

Yeah, I mean, I could see it either way. I mean, it really boils down to, you know, what do they think is in the best interest of this kid? Because he has a kid. He's 19. He's still a teenager. It's wild to believe. Is he the best shortstop on our roster? Yes. Can you manage with Alika Williams and Gonzalez early in the season, allow him to kind of get his mind wrapped around being a big leaguer?

0

81.28 - 99.09

Absolutely. I mean... I can't imagine how the hype he's had, guys. I mean, you think about it, he's been a national talking point since February 14th. I mean, since Valentine's Day, the love in baseball has been Connor Griffin and Paul Skeens. It's great for the Pirates. You want to understand what it's going to take.

0

99.07 - 113.907

For him to understand how big that really is, can he handle it right out of the gate? Me personally, knowing him, I think he can. But I think it's an internal decision that's very difficult. And no matter what, we're going to see that kid very early in the big leagues.

116.097 - 132.486

I wonder, Michael, if you do keep him down for even if it is three weeks, do you think that he is the type of guy that might be a little deterred by that? Because one thing that was kind of floated out there with Bubba Chandler is they kept him down too long and maybe he got a little bit bored and disinterested with the minor leagues.

132.787 - 143.914

Do you think there's any way that Griffin might feel a similar way? Uh, no, I don't. I think they're two different personalities. Connor Griffin's got a little bit more level head.

Chapter 2: How does Michael McKenry view the impact of the World Baseball Classic on baseball's growth?

144.455 - 155.892

Bubba's got a little bit more psycho in him, which I love. I think Bubba was down a long time last year, and I think it was more about innings. I think maybe the PR side of that on both sides could have been a little bit better, but at the end of the day...

0

155.872 - 177.812

you know bubba needed a little bit more refinement he he had these runs three four starts in a row where he was absolutely dominant and then he'd lose the zone um so he was still working on things connor griffin he's already the best shortstop on our team um there's no question about that athletically what he can get to um the way he can run the bases he can change the game

0

178.062 - 196.027

Very simply, in an instant. And there's not many guys in the big leagues who can do that. We have two guys on our team that can do that, possibly three if you count Ozuna with his bat. But when you have O'Neal Cruz and Connor Griffin who can change it in a multitude of ways, that's special. And not many teams have two players like that.

0

196.067 - 215.524

So having two guys like that on our team would be really, really significant. Michael, are you watching the World Baseball Classic? And what do you think of the competition? How about Surveillance? Do you want a hat? USA Baseball, baby. Oh, yeah. There we go. Of course. I can see that. I breed white, white, and blue. I'm a part of that organization in the younger levels.

0

217.086 - 236.487

I can't explain how cool it is to watch these guys go out and play like they're little children. I do wish the USA guys were a little bit more animated, like the Dominican of Venezuela and Italy. But they're letting their personality shine. And I think it's such a good thing for baseball. I don't think we talk about that enough. This is going to grow baseball.

236.467 - 258.294

every time it's on it's going to grow baseball i hope in 2028 we do what hockey does take two weeks off and play right in the middle of the summer because that's how cool i think this is right now i was rooting for cervelli i love that team uh the espresso and the dugout and everything else they had going on they were a fun watch and and he's great right Yeah, no question.

258.314 - 277.87

I think he's born to manage and be a leader of men. I think he was great at it as a player. I think what he's trying to do in Italy is incredible. What they did in the biggest stage ever was remarkable. And you could tell they were there to prove a point. And I think they did. They put themselves right in the middle of the talk.

277.89 - 293.416

And I think as they move forward, they're just going to get better and better. So Michael, one thing that a lot of people are talking about right now is that the starting pitching matchup is Nolan McClain for Team USA and not a guy like Skeens or Scooble or Logan Webb or Joe Ryan was floated out there as a potential name.

294.297 - 311.32

Why do you think that that is, that McClain is the guy and is it a little bit of a detriment to the sport that it's not a bigger, more established pitcher? That's why I think the Olympics are so important. Right now, these guys have restrictions just the time of year. They're all trying to get ready for the season.

Chapter 3: What factors influence the decision to keep Konnor Griffin in the minors or promote him?

327.036 - 340.494

Why can't they all go out and throw one or two innings? I mean, it's a Skeens bullpen day, so it does make sense. He could throw one inning. Webb threw, what, six days ago. He's probably fresh. So a lot of these guys could go out and throw an inning and be just fine.

0

340.514 - 358.459

So it's going to be interesting to see what's allowed by the teams and what DeRosa kind of throws at the Venezuela team because it is not going to be easy if those guys throw one or two innings and they're out and the next guy's coming in because that's the hardest thing about spring training, and it'd be the hardest thing to try to compete against if you're a Venezuela team.

0

359.519 - 379.224

So, Michael, we talked about this early in the show today, how a Pirates fan might feel if Skeens takes the mound tonight. And I don't know if he's been ruled out, but even if the manager says he's ruled out, we all know Skeens. If this thing goes 13 innings, he's going to want to pitch, if it comes down to it, an inning. How would you feel about it?

0

379.284 - 400.725

Would it be too risky for him to go out there and throw an inning at this point in the season? Or would it be something that will be cool to watch? Would it would it be sensible? I think it absolutely be sensible. I think he knows himself as well as anybody. And he's not going to put himself in harm's way. If he can do it, why not?

0

401.166 - 424.414

At the end of the day, you could get hurt walking down the street. We've seen guys be in a hotel room and a piece of luggage falls on them. They're out four to six weeks with a broken hand. So I say you play this game for such a short amount of time and life expectancy. So, I mean, at the end of the day, just go out and play. If he can do it, let him do it. I think that'd be fascinating.

424.454 - 445.663

Even if he came in like a Madison Bumgarner type role, like late in the, late in the game and the playoffs and just throw an inning, that would be, that'd be kind of fascinating. But I think guys, the thing is they put it out a plan like what ifs, and they probably don't even have a, what if, if he can't come in in the first nine innings, I don't think we'll see him, you know, in extra innings.

445.683 - 463.32

I think they have enough arms and enough rested arms, but I mean, Bednar's thrown four to six games. So I just think it depends on the guy and what he wants to do. So we saw Henry Davis-Homer a couple of games ago also had an RBI base hit. Do you think he's starting to find something? Is there anything different from what you've seen in his swing now compared to the very beginning of spring?

464.617 - 485.82

I think he's allowing time, or at least I hope he is. Instead of trying to get it all at once, which is kind of his personality at the point, he's seemingly allowing time to happen. What am I feeling? How can I make adjustments? Am I swinging at the right pitches? How am I missing these pitches? The one thing I'll say is he's not popping up as much. He's in a lot more ground balls.

486.181 - 500.277

He's getting on top and scoring it up a little bit better. So, I mean, that's what you want to see in spring training. You want to see hard outs, which he's had. And you just have quality of bats. So if he can continue to move forward, yes, I think the results are going to come. But it's all about the process for me.

Chapter 4: How does Michael McKenry assess Connor Griffin's potential as a shortstop?

512.813 - 526.803

He did not get a hit in spring training. He was 0 for 42. And I said, man, you got him all the way. And sure enough, he did and won the batting title. Is Nick Gonzalez good enough defensively at shortstop to hold that spot down until Griffin gets here? Absolutely.

0

549.943 - 568.947

He was very, very good defensively the last two years at second base. Two years ago, he was outstanding towards the end of the year, really anticipating balls. I think his baseball IQ makes him even better at shortstop. I think he's going to be in the right position at the right time. And then having Triolo. who can really cover some ground, playing third base is really going to help.

0

568.987 - 589.567

So he can kind of venture a little bit more to that second base side, help low, and then Triolo is going to cover more ground than most third basemen just because of his range and how big he is. So, yeah, I think he's going to be great. I can't imagine having Triolo. And Griffin on that left side, I think we'll have maybe the best left side in all baseball.

0

590.569 - 606.505

I think Kansas City may have one that's just as good. But when you talk about size and range, I don't know if there'd be two guys to cover more. The outfield defense concerns me, Michael, because Ryan O'Hearn is not traditionally a right fielder. We've seen the adventure that Brian Reynolds can be in left.

607.206 - 621.799

How do you think they deploy those guys, and could you see Jake Mangum as a defensive replacement that even takes a bat out of that order, even O'Neal Cruz in center? Yeah, I think O'Neal Cruz will be in center. Hopefully 162 to be honest.

622.119 - 641.705

I want to see that guy get every single about every single opportunity because even on his bad days he still has the capability to change the game and one swing in one infield single where you still second still third. There's a throw away. So yeah, he's a dynamic guy. I want to see every single day. The defense, I think I'm going to take it a different route for you guys.

642.166 - 658.632

None of these guys have ever played where they haven't gotten off their feet. And putting Ozuna right in the middle of our lineup, this guy's DHed 162 games in a season before. He's going to get every chance to DH. So not only do we have guys that are going to play outfield more than they ever have, they're going to be –

658.612 - 681.295

literally playing more than they ever have so I think guys like Jake Mangum are going to be huge late in ball games to come in and fill in the gap I think he's going to rotate in and out and give guys the adequate adequate rest that they need I think you're going to see O'Hearn come in from the outfield a lot late in games to play first base so yeah I think you're going to see an interesting um

Chapter 5: What are the defensive strategies for the Pirates' outfield this season?

Limits, I'd say the Denver Broncos might be in a little hot water. And what I mean by that is they better be right about giving up all that for Jalen Waddell. Bob Pompiani tweeting, man, the Steelers deal for Pittman looks better. I guess for now it does. I just happen to think Waddle's the better player.

0

779.418 - 805.192

So as they say, even if whether it's within the same trade or comparing two trades, the team that got the best player wins. You know, I mean, no matter what you gave up, they got potentially, potentially a really high impact trade. maybe number one receiver. The Steelers have clearly a number two. But like I said, I will grant you that the numbers of late bear out what Bob is saying.

0

805.232 - 820.336

I just think that could change this season when you put Waddle in that Denver offense. Yeah, I think sometimes that is true where if you just acquire the more talented player who cares about the picks. I feel that way about a lot of NBA trades and even some NHL trades.

820.736 - 833.153

But the NFL, when you're giving up a first-round pick who's going to immediately be an instant starter for you, that's why I like—or at least could be—that's why I like the Pittman deal so much because you basically gave up nothing. You flipped sixth and seventh-round picks.

833.133 - 850.892

You're just paying him $20 million, and you had that money, and you still have your first-round pick to take another wide receiver. So maybe it's just me being more high on the Pittman trade than some others, even though I like Jalen Waddell a lot. I just thought the value of the deal was just so significant as to why I'd rather have it. All right.

851.312 - 865.772

Coming up last, let's get back to the Penguins and also Jason LaConfort with a new piece on Aaron Rodgers that I found quite interesting. We'll do all of that as we wrap it up here on Very Rarely Pump and Jill.
