Why does professionalism matter more than you think in the pet industry?

Chenelle Conquest 0:02
Welcome back to the Pet Industry Mentor Podcast. If we haven't met before and today is your lucky day and you have stumbled across my podcast for the first time, my name is Chanel. I'm a pet industry mentor, podcast host, obviously, and former owner of a multi-six-figure pet care business that I built and sold after 10 years running teams. Managing a whole lot of chaos, building systems myself, and learning the hard lessons that come with running a real business in this industry. And most recently, I purchased a let's call it failing grooming salon, which I am sharing my journey of that as well. Rebuilding and seeing how that goes, learning new lessons along the way, of course. Share with you. And I work with pet business owners all over Australia, the US, Canada, and the UK, helping them turn chaos back into cash by building businesses that are not only profitable, because that's not everything, but also professional, sustainable, and respected.

And today's episode is one I'm gonna love because it's going to ruffle a few. feathers, but honestly, I just think it needs to be said. I think a lot of people want the income of a professional business owner because it sounds really nice to say Let's do a 10k, let's do a 20k, let's do a 50k month. Like, oh my goodness, the end golf everybody. But so many people I'm seeing are trying to do that without actually holding themselves to professional standards. And you just can't. I'm gonna tell you right now, you will not get there. Not holding yourself to professional standards. Everybody wants the same thing. They want to be fully booked. They want to have the premium pricing, the best clients, the most loyal clients.

And obviously, in this industry that is still seen to be a joke by so many, everyone wants to be taken seriously. But you know, the second things are like uncomfortable or emotional or stressful or inconvenient, s for some reason a lot of professionalism just goes out the window. Like, it's just gone. I see too many people. lashing out unprofessionally the second things build a little bit of pressure. I want you to understand, because it's very important, is that professionalism is not Only tested when things are easy. Okay, you can't call yourself a professional. if you're not remaining professional even when you don't want to be. It's always gonna be tested when a client annoys you or your pricing is questioned or when you get a complaint because they suck and it can be very hard to deal with.

How can you stay professional when clients are demanding or complaints arise?

Chenelle Conquest 2:56
Like genuinely a complaint feels like shit, especially when you're a solo operator. Um, it goes hand in hand if someone leaves you a bad review, if a pet is difficult, when you're stressed and you're tired, when things don't go your way, those are the times when professionalism actually matters. And if you know that you remain professional during those times, then you can call yourself one. If you know cracks start to show during those times and you slip and you act out unprofessionally. Sorry, you can't call yourself a full time professional. Take a shot every time I say that word this episode. No, don't do that. You will pass out. And then you won't get to hear all my gold nuggets of wisdom. You know, anyone can look professional when
Chenelle Conquest 3:47
Money's flowing, clients are praising us online, things are going our way. But you can only call yourself, as I've just said, a true professional if you remain one, even when you don't want to be. And there will be times you don't want to act professionally. I still have those myself to this day, and that's the difference. And I don't know why, but the pet industry has normalized. Thank you, TikTok. A lot of emotionally reactive behavior. Because, you know, it's under the excuse of being passionate or having an opinion or ranting about the industry. And I c I'll tell you what, side note, sidebar everyone. I know that this has been normalized because a few people started ranting about clients pricing feedback, the industry online, and because so many pet professionals related, that content did well.
