You're not allowed to say it like it's a Super Bowl or something. I don't know.
World Cup match. Algeria and Super Argentina.
Like a bowl. Of Dean's Dip. That's one of the best commercials ever.
I do like that one.

Chapter 2: What insights does Sam McDowell provide on the World Cup?
That is pretty good. Good times, good times.
Somebody got to raise an increase in pay when they pop that one.
Yeah. So?
So?
What do you think? Here we are. How you doing? Covering the... You... Been all over Algeria, all over Argentina?
Both, actually. Well, so what can you tell us about them? I mean, I was out yesterday at Union Station. There was a gathering of Algeria fans out there and then went to Mill Creek Park where there was a massive gathering of Argentina fans. I know there was something at Power and Light with Argentina and something off Southwest Boulevard as well.
And then went to Lawrence to watch Algeria fans greet the team that was coming to their hotel at like 10 o'clock at night. They're just staying at like a Doubletree.
It's a Radisson, isn't it?
No.

Chapter 3: How is Kansas City embracing World Cup fans?
Yeah, I think that is where we'll see some of the residual. Like people are going to get an impression of Kansas City and we may never be able to connect the dot. But if he goes back like like if suddenly 10 years from now, the population of Algerians living in the Lawrence area is like has gone from none to 200. you'll be able to directly come back to this moment.
Olathe has a very big Algerian population. I talked to a couple people actually who live in Lebanon.
There's a number of African countries that have a pretty good population.
In southern Johnson County, yeah, in particular, yeah.
Chapter 4: What unique experiences did fans have during the World Cup events?
But Cliff Illig told me a quote a couple weeks ago that I thought was great, which he said, I asked him about what you want people outside the the metro to see. And he said, we got to show off that our lifestyle is the best thing we've got. And, you know, I mean, there's I think New York would probably show off a lot of the, you know,
non-people assets of the city, I guess is the way I'd phrase it, as far as the skyscrapers and all the tourist attractions and all that stuff. And I just, I totally agreed with Cliff that the lifestyle is what draws a lot of us here and keeps a lot of us here.
Yeah, it is. It's It's got everything you, for the most part, could want. No mountains or oceans, right? But, you know, all the activities without all the hustle and bustle and the stress.
To me, it's a metropolitan city with a small town feel. That's how I've always felt.
So what do you expect out of the match tonight? I'm interested to see if Messi makes it through the 90 minutes. I mean, he is coming off of an injury, his last appearance. And I mean, during the media viewing at the community session is what they're calling the open practice that they had.
He still was dealing with that, I think, pretty visibly as far as having, you know, a trainer around all the time. And so that's, I mean, all of our eyeballs are going to be on Messi. But I think they would be anyway. But now it's, you know, can he play 90 minutes? And I'm fascinated by the fact that the reports from Argentina are that he's going to start.
That that's the seriousness with which they're taking the first match, even though, you know, Blair Kirkhoff pointed out on a staff meeting we had today, Argentina lost its first match last time four years ago. and still did just fine in the tournament. But they obviously think this is a pretty big match. Yeah. And what do we think the crowd's going to be like?
I think this crowd is going to be the best of the group stage. You're going to have people from Kansas City who are going to a World Cup game for the first time ever. You're going to have people from Argentina who, I mean, at these gatherings I went to last night, as any indication, bring plenty of energy.
And you're going to have people from Algeria that I think have this this feeling of togetherness and have really absorbed like this underdog feeling. We don't care. that we're the underdog, like we're here to make some noise. And by the way, Algeria's got a good team. Like, this is not, I mean, I know that Argentina's favorite, they should be favorite.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of Kansas City's hospitality for future events?
It's like a whole bunch of different places. Not even close, like different continents. The next one's in like five different cities or five different countries that aren't even close.
Yeah, there's like Spain, Morocco, and I don't know, everywhere. Isn't Argentina one of them? Is it?
Okay. Yeah. I'm thinking just Google the next two are already out there. And I think they're going to this multi-nation thing, which I think takes away from it. Like Saudi Arabia is coming up. They're on the board for like 34. Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.
Portugal's the other one.
Morocco. All right, it's just those three?
No, there's opening matches. Opening matches in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Yeah, okay. That's what I thought.
And in 34, it says Saudi Arabia.
But then they settle down to Morocco. So they are getting both continents of Europe and Africa there. But that's the straight where it comes together, right? Yeah, but I still, I mean. As far as travel, the flights aren't that far.

Chapter 6: How does Sam McDowell assess the Royals' current situation?
is 4-1. There were four ties yesterday. But otherwise, we're seeing very competitive soccer. I mean, the fear was that we're going to watch a bunch of ass-kickings, and that does not seem to be the case so far.
The Spain match yesterday, that was projected to, I think, and I'm going to misquote this, but I think Cabo Verde was like 25-1 or something going into that match. Now, that is them to win the match. They didn't win, but... Them tying is a pretty major upset. Yeah.
It was the Sports Business Journal. It was? It said that Fox could generate around $249.6 million from hydration break adverts alone based on an average price of $300,000 per 30-second spot.
$300,000, not $3 million. $300,000 per 30.
Okay. I added an extra zero. Each break is three minutes. It's six spots. So what's that? $1.8 million per break?
Yeah. Yeah. Never good to add an extra zero in those situations.
No, it gets out of hand quickly. That's a bit of a problem. But it does change the game.
832 was the right number.
It does change the game. I said 834 just to be clear.

Chapter 7: What challenges does Texas Tech face in their current season?
What do they call it? The doors? The gates? The gates are open? Is that what it is? The floodgates? Floodgates. Yeah, there it is. Thank you. Floodgates are open. 2-0 France. We'll take a break. Sam McDowell is with us. Columns for your Kansas City Star. He's brought to you by our friends at All Weather Decks. Kansas City's best when it comes to building your outdoor living spaces.

See photos of finished projects. Great place. All the awards they've won, and they've won a ton of them. They're at allweatherdecks.net. Sam, then, real quick on the Royals. Do you see them starting to ship some pieces out? Another question immediately becomes, well, what do you have that you can trade? Well, I know you're not going to trade Bobby Witt. They've got pieces they could trade.
I think so, too. And I even think that they should be open to it. Teams just don't make these kind of deals. But, you know, they don't fit. I'm not going to declare it the MJ Melendez moment, but they do have a first baseman playing right field. And they also had him play right field yesterday so that their catcher could play first. They have two catchers. They have two first basemen.
They really have two shortstops. One of them plays third. That happens a lot more often in baseball that you just move the shortstop over and he's a goal glove third baseman. Well, okay. We're fine with that. They don't really have a second baseman. How about at some point you start trading some of the surplus to start making some of the pieces fit?
I do think the Royals will eventually get in a spot where they sell. I don't know that they'll do it on June 16th. But those bigger trades that are more philosophical in the sense of trying to make your lineup fit together for how it's actually going to look for the future... I think sometimes that makes more sense in the offseason.
I don't know if you want to be pressed by the deadline in those situations, but I think you should be open. You shouldn't have guys that are off your list.
Yeah, I think you're right. I think they end up becoming ā almost every deal now is a seller and a buyer. Yes. And so if you're like, well, I need a second baseman that can be my second baseman every day ā And he's in the big leagues. They probably don't have another second baseman to just plug in, so they're not giving him up. So I do agree with that.
But it also could be that you take back a double-A second baseman. You take back an A ball second baseman.

Chapter 8: How are major league teams approaching trades this season?
You stack up two more like it, and yes, I think that seed gets planted in the player's mind. Okay, but is it... So my point is I think that affects the timing of the type of player, and I think there will be more of the guys that are a year away or currently ready in the offseason in that sense.
I think you should just focus on selling guys that are rental players and getting the best prospects wherever they are back.
Yes. If it's all we've got to get guys that are near major league ready, you're really limiting what you need.
Unless it's major league for a major league player, in which case I think those make more sense in the offseason. Agreed.
All right, since 1982, what player has had the most sacks in their first two NFL seasons? Brought to you by Lafetta Delicatessen.
