Chapter 1: What community spirit is highlighted in Kansas City?
Around here, we show up for one another. We want the same for our health insurance. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City gets that because they're from here, too. It's coverage from folks who know these roads and care enough to walk them with you. That's the benefit of blue.
Second half of the program begins right now as we're going around the country. Two minutes at a time talking to the people covering the stories where they're happening. We are at Nick and Jake's great spot. If you can hustle in here and if in the final minute, nope, that's it. You can't do it. Kevin Timmons gave away two gift cards to everybody, every single person here at Nick and Jake's today.
One for each goal scored by the U.S. men's national team. It is over. USA wins 2-0 over Australia. So they have six points in their pool. You can hear the folks chanting USA behind us. Of course, the U.S. Open golf still going on here. We'll have the baseball up on the TV here shortly. And, of course, the World Cup always a great spot to watch everything. Nick and Jake's.
Kansas City's spot for golf, for baseball, football, you name it. And they've got their New England-inspired menu going on all weekend. Don't forget, book a reservation for Father's Day as well. Go to nickandjakes.com. Three locations around the metro. It's Nick and Jake's. Let's get things started on the two-minute drill. We begin in Seattle, Washington.
In fact, I think Dick is going to be broadcasting his show right around the corner from where the U.S. men just wrapped up their win over Australia from KJR in Seattle, Washington. Dick Payne. Dick, how are you, buddy?
You can hear the Vuvuzelas around me right now. Yeah, they're going to be emptying out of Lumen Field here in just a minute. And 2-0 win. Excellent. I was at the bar. Jimmy's watching there. And I'll be doing the show, yeah, in about 20 minutes or so.

Chapter 2: How did the U.S. men's national team perform against Australia?
So really good scenes here in Seattle. Just a picture-perfect day. I mean, Seattle was out in its full glory today, no question about it.
Yeah, how is Seattle taking to the World Cup? We've got it going on here. We know what's happening, how electric it's been here around Kansas City. We don't have the U.S. team playing. We had an incredible scene where we had Argentina winning 3-0 in a hat trick from Lionel Messi, and then all the Argentinian fans celebrating.
We got four different clubs that have their base camp here, including Argentina, England, Algeria, and the Netherlands that are all making this their base camp. So we know what's going on here. What's it like? How much is it really, you know, setting the tone for what's going on in Seattle right now?
Yeah, we really didn't know what to expect. I mean, we've never had it here before, and so tickets were a little flat for a while, and then as we got closer, they started spiking, and then I think what kind of got me was on Monday in that first game, and just the Egyptian crowd just showed up in all red all throughout the city, and it was just like, okay, this is...
This is a really, really big deal. I mean, you knew the World Cup's a big deal, but, you know, we're so isolated from the rest of the world's soccer, and we don't really know how big it is, but it was big today, man. I was down on the waterfront. I did the big march to the match with thousands of people, and it was just very, very cool scenes.
And, yeah, it's one of the biggest events that Seattle has ever hosted. There's no question about that.
Yeah, we know Seattle, a great soccer town. We know how many fans they get for the Sounders there, so I would expect it to be a very lively spot for everybody and be great all throughout the whole tournament. All right, let's talk a little Mariners baseball, 39-37, first in the American League West. I don't think anybody's surprised by that, but still surprised that they're only 39-37.
Is the ship going in the right direction? Do you feel good about where they are right now, or are there problems that they've got to figure out?
Yeah, I think a little of both. I think the injuries really have hit this team hard. We have not seen that the last couple of years. This has been a pretty injury-free team the last few years. And it's just all hit in the first two and a half months of this season.

Chapter 3: What is the atmosphere like in Seattle during the World Cup?
I mean, almost every starter has been out at some point. The starting rotation has actually been the most healthy. That's probably been the biggest surprise is that we've only had one guy in the starting rotation be out with injury. That was Bryce Miller earlier on in the season. And the starting rotation has been... Yeah, kind of up and down.
I mean, we had a great performance from Brian Wu yesterday. But as far as offensively, it's just been so many mismatched pieces coming into this team. And Cal Raleigh was out for a while. Hooley was out for a while. Josh Naylor was out for a while. Basically everybody in this lineup. Brendan Donovan, your guy, I mean, we got a sneak peek of him for the first two weeks of the season.
We loved what we saw from Brendan Donovan, and then poof, he's been gone for like two months. So, I mean, once we get everybody back here, I think this is a team that ends up, I don't know if they'll get to 90 wins, but I think it's a comfortable AL West championship for the Mariners.
The piggyback rotation where they're going to start Bryce Miller and then finish with Luis Castillo. Because they've got Kate Anderson, who nobody's getting a hit off of in double-A. I know it's double-A, but they've said that he'll bake it to the big leagues this year. At least that's the plan, the way things are going right now. They've got too much pitching.
As the deadline rolls around, could they trade a front-line starter for... You know, there aren't many teams that do a big leaguer for big leaguers, usually a buyer for a seller, but are they in a position with all the depth of starting pitching that they actually can make a trade for the future by moving one of their starters?
Yeah, I think they could move one of their stars. I probably would say it's at the end of the season, and it's probably a guy like Logan Gilbert who's going to be up for a contract extension after next season. He would be probably first on the list, and you would trade him for a ready-made hitter, maybe a 24-, 25-year-old hitter.
That is also a good defender that you could have three or four years of club control. I could see the Mariners pulling off a deal like that. But yeah, it's a good problem to have right now. We have six starters in the rotation that are all starting pitchers. And then we've got a situation where you mentioned Kate Anderson. We also have Ryan Sloan as well.
I mean, he's a guy that is a high draft pick. And so there's eight pitchers that could pitch in major league games right now. And so, yes, I do see one of those guys probably being sent at the end of the season.
Okay, but not until the end of the year. It'll be interesting to see what they do at the deadline with where they are because it's a season that it's all in, I would think, with this team for this year. What's the reaction in Seattle to the Rams going out and getting Miles Garrett?

Chapter 4: What challenges are the Mariners facing this season?
Is this just what they are like? There's no next gear for them to shift into and get going. Are they just going to be muddling around 500 or a little below all year?
It certainly feels like this is just who they are. The offense is just abysmal. Everything that you saw from the rotation at the beginning of the year that made you say, oh, they might have a chance to kind of just stay afloat and stay alive because of this. That is starting to regress. Jack Leiter has taken an absolute slide downhill.
You're starting to see some weird trends with the beginning of games from your starters, including guys who you thought were, you know, invincible like Nathan Evaldi and Jacob deGrom. The first inning home run statistics are just something that you've never heard of from any team. And you talk about the leadoff home run specifically.
I think the gap between the most leadoff home runs given up by rotation by any team and the Rangers who are first in that awful statistic is like four or five home runs. It's unheard of. some of the things that they are doing and some of the trends that they are on. And you saw some roster moves even made just about half an hour ago.
What was a all-star conversation in Josh Smith last year at second base, he just got demoted today to AAA. And Jared Kelnick, the former number one overall prospect in all of baseball, who has not been able to hit himself out of a shopping bag, is getting a chance to get himself some at-bats here with the Major League team in Texas today. That's how bad things are going.
Jared Kelnick is getting a chance with this Major League roster. So they are what they are at this point, but Chris Young, the president of baseball operations, has literally never known what selling is like. So it wouldn't shock me if at the deadline they still button their shirt up and say, we're going to try to make a push for this thing because the American League is so bad.
Chris Young was, of course, part of the Royals' 2015 World Series team. Is he liked, disliked, ambiguous? What's the feeling amongst Ranger fans with Chris Young?
I think fans are starting to get a little...
tired just because it is kind of broken record it's nice to hear him speak sometimes on the state of the teams he's not he's not blind to it and he's not oblivious but he will always go to bat for the roster that he puts together and he's always going to point towards the few additions that he does make is in the rotation and within the bullpen and he'll say with this pitching we always got a chance with this pitching we've always got a chance and yes

Chapter 5: How is the Cowboys' offseason shaping up?
So maybe Salve's coming around. But what does the home run record for Kauffman Stadium mean?
Wouldn't mean very much to me. I think most people don't look at splits. It's going to matter when he passes Brett for the all-time team lead. Because that's something that's going to be in one of the first pages in the record book. And when you look at...
Salvador Perez's page wherever you're gonna look at it it's gonna say Royals all-time homerun leader and I think that's that that means a lot more this is an interesting step but it was step you probably would expect along the way I'm sure most people who are their franchises homerun leader a lot of people are who are the
franchise home run leader in a given ballpark when it's been around that long. So maybe now we saw some stuff earlier. There's people playing a lot of different places or teams that play in many different places. The Royals are not that common to have the same ballpark for 50 years. But to me, the team leads a lot more. This is kind of a fun thing along the way.
Yeah, it's taken a while. Yeah. I mean, we've given the the first pitch swinging stats. We're put together by iPhone, and he is hacking for it in a big, big way, to say the least. All right, we'll take a break. We're at Nick and Jake's. You can come on by and enjoy their wonderful New England menu. They're going around the country with all kinds of different menus.
This week, it's their New England menu. So come in and take advantage of some New England style, like the New England fried clams. We got some of those. They were great, great appetizer. Maple bacon glazed pork chops, seafood linguine, maple pepper bacon Wagyu burger. Got desserts like the blueberry crisp, the chocolate whoopie pie cheesecake. It is a great, great time.
Come on by Nick and Jake's and enjoy the wonderful food. Don't forget you can make reservations for Father's Day as well. At all three Nick and Jake's locations, go to nickandjakes.com. You're listening to the program here on Sports Radio 810 WHP. You know you can register all the way through Sunday for the Corona event.
