Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Welcome back into the program. I'm Todd Lebo in for Serene Petro today and tomorrow. Jack Johnson will be in on Friday as Petro. I don't know if he's going to a World Cup match or not. He doesn't know. He's going to visit a friend to watch the World Cup. But will he watch the match in person? I told him you're going all the way to New York to hang out with the Germans. Go watch a match.
Anyway, Tim Grunhardt is joining us now to talk a little whatever we want to talk about.
Chapter 2: What insights does Tim Grunhardt share about the World Cup?
We're going to talk football with Timmy, but it's the summertime, so we'll talk about whatever we want to talk about with Timmy. How are you doing, Timmy?
I'm doing great. Yeah, I just got a call from the Chiefs, and they asked me if I wanted to go to the match on Thursday to sit in the FIFA suite. You should go. I thought that was pretty cool. I can't. I'm down here in the Southern Command Center in Florida. That's right. But I have been watching. I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I think we talked about it a little bit last week with Saran.
When the World Cup is around, especially here in the United States, I'm going to watch. To me, it's kind of like the must-see TV, like the Olympics and stuff. And of course, you know, hockey playoffs and, you know, basketball playoffs, the NCAA tournament. These are things you got to watch. And I've been enjoying it. I really have.
For me, it's like the kind of perfect time of the year because baseball is going on, but there's not much else happening. And you tell me sometimes there's a game on at 11 in the morning and then maybe one at noon, maybe one at two o'clock. And I'm just sitting here at work and I got something that's happening.
Chapter 3: How does Tim Grunhardt feel about attending the FIFA match in Kansas City?
I'm down. Count me in. Something I could maybe put a little single game parlay on for a little fun. I'm in. I think it's been very fun so far. It's too bad you can't be here tomorrow because that's going to be a scene. We got the Netherlands in town, all right? Now, you've seen some videos of the Orange Army, they call it.
They're going to be marching from the P&L down Grand like a Chiefs parade or a Royals parade. And if you haven't seen the videos of what this looks like during the World Cup, it is insane. They just, the whole...
army of fans they take the street over they dance they they sing they do all this stuff and that is going to be i'm a little dicey on the weather tomorrow we'll see but it's going to be a great scene at kansas city stadium which we will call arrowhead um tomorrow it's a shame you won't be able to be there because that would be a really fun experience for you but i get it man
You're in the Southern Command. That's cool, too. Apparently all the people from Scotland went all the way to the Southern Southern Command down to Miami because they were all up in Boston before. And I guess their goal, Tim, is to drink all the beer in every town they go to. So I don't know. People are having fun in America. That's what I love to see. All of your beer. All of the beer.
And bacon. Poured in some pint glasses. But I love when America is getting a good spotlight. It's great.
Absolutely. And the orange bus, I was watching the news yesterday, and the orange bus will be ā leading the parade. I think that's really cool. In the Netherlands, yeah, they do it right. It's a cool tradition. And that's part of the charm and the allure of having these other countries in our country.
First of all, not to get political and that kind of stuff, but to a man, everybody's like, man, America is great. We love the people here. All we do is see negativity and on the news, and we're here, and it's completely opposite. So it does put our country, which I think is the greatest country in the world, in a great light.
So, yeah, in Kansas City, I was watching a little bit yesterday, and they had a representative from the Netherlands, and they just couldn't say enough about how Parkville has just gone above and beyond and how they've welcomed everybody. And I know England, when you drive around over in Prairie Village and Leawood and that area, they have ā
signs out in the yard that say, go England, and I think that's great. And, you know, Kansas City's a great sports town, and I think the world is getting to see that now. I'm really proud of the organization, and just the turnout and the hospitality that Kansas City has shown. So great job to Kansas City.

Chapter 4: What preparations were made at Arrowhead Stadium for the World Cup?
what the hell happened in here so i mean they had gotten that water out of the locker room but those carpets uh were still soaked and i'm like so that my knee got wet tim do you feel bad for me i got wet that night too no i don't feel bad for you with that but i do i do feel bad for you the one time one of our famous interactions you and i had early in our nfl career i i can't remember exactly what happened but
You came over after a game, we were interviewing you, and you and I were talking. We had a nice relationship at that time and still do. In fact, I think the very first time you and I met, you were doing something for Conrad Dobler. That's right. And we were in Lynn Dickey's doing something in 1990. That's how long we go back.
But you were sitting there, we were talking, and then all of a sudden Carl Peterson came over. And he whispered in my ear, don't talk to these guys. They do nothing but slander us. I can't remember exactly what he said.
I'll tell you exactly what it was. It was also Seattle, I believe. It was a night game, and it was the time that they had concocted. They were trying to break the attendance record. by having fans watch the game at Kauffman. And so Carl Peterson, listen, Kevin had been mocking the idea because it was kind of a silly idea to say this was an attendance record. And so that's what Carl was mad about.
So I went over to Carl after. I'm like, so what are you saying? I don't have a credential. I can't talk to anyone. What am I supposed to do? Blah, blah, blah, blah. And he kind of said, he said, he said, he said, Your boss has been running down Lamar Hunt, blah, blah, blah, and all this stuff. And I was so mad. Tim, I tell people this all the time.
You can ask any one of these young people around here. My role is ABR, always be rolling. So I had a mini disc player back then, and they were a little touchy. And I had the microphone and the mini disc player in my hand, and I was not rolling. And I don't have the audio of Carl Peterson telling me I couldn't talk to anyone. And that has been...
bothering me for 30 years forever but he said that yeah your boss uh he's not very nice he's not being nice to my boss i'll take um one final note on that seattle game what i remember about it is is uh you won that night to move to go to four and one and then lost seven straight
No, don't bring that up. We're not talking about that. We're going to take a break on that note. We're not going to talk about how 1998 ended. It wasn't great.

Chapter 5: What are the challenges of maintaining a football field for soccer matches?
Before you take your break, I think it was later on in that same year when I had my famous quote, and they were rolling. Yeah, see? Do you remember my famous quote that I said? Was that something about a baseball bat? Yeah, something about a baseball bat.
Yeah. Yeah. Rolling on that one, you know. I almost always roll. And I thought I was rolling during Carl talking to me, but I wasn't, and it bothers me to this day. Tim Grunhardt is with us here on the program. We'll come back, break down more stuff with Timmy here on a big Wednesday on Sports Radio 810 WHB.

Chapter 6: How does Tim Grunhardt compare NFL and FIFA regulations on field conditions?
And you have a couple of practices a day and meetings all night. You know, you basically get back to your dorm room at 10 o'clock and lights are out at 11 o'clock and you wake up the next morning at six and start the whole thing over kind of like a groundhog day where it's just over and over the same thing.
So a lot of times mentally, you know, guys get just tired mentally and you just can't have that because, you know, training camp is a microcosm of a game, you know, first and second quarter, you may have all the energy and you might be clear headed and, and know exactly what you're doing. But when you get tired is when you start making mistakes.
And you get tired is when, you know, you put yourself in a position to fail or turn the ball over or have a mental error and give up a sack or whatever. And usually that's in the third and fourth quarter. So if you can kind of just ā Test yourself. Really, like Marty used to say, go to the next play or you watch baseball.
You see the baseball players, they may go over four, but they've got to put that behind them. The next day, see if they get a couple of knocks and get themselves back on track. It's the players that get swallowed up by that mental drain, and they keep making mistake after mistake. and they kind of compile on themselves.
And the next thing you know, you're putting yourself in a position where you're not going to make a team because of all the mistakes you're making because you're worried about what you did the day before. So that's one of my things I tell these kids is, listen, you're going to have bad plays. You're going to jump off sides. You're going to get beat. you're going to be put in a position to fail.
But those are the tests. Those are the things that the coaches want to see, how you bounce back from those things and how you find ways to have success after failure. And all those things, For everybody out there, the coaches, every night after a training camp practice, will sit at a table.
The first thing they do is they go through their roster with position players, and they talk about, how's this guy doing? How is he making adjustments? Is he mentally strong enough to get through a whole season? Is he mentally strong enough to get through a whole game?
You know, so those are the things that they're looking at just as much as how fast they are, how strong they are, how quick they are, or, you know, how many catches they made, how many tackles they made. They want to see if these guys can can make the adjustment after failure, because you're going to have failure in a game, especially an NFL game. Everybody good in college football. You make.
go a whole game against a guy that you can handle and it's not that big of a deal and had practice was harder than the guy you're going against. But in the NFL, that doesn't happen. You're going to fail. And part of the evaluation process is Can you bounce back after a negative play? Can you go to the next play?
