Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This is the Sounding Board podcast with Hutchie and Damo. Thanks to Drinkwise. If you're choosing to have a drink, choose to Drinkwise.
Hello and welcome to the Sounding Board scorecard for Drinkwise. If you're choosing to drink, choose to Drinkwise. My name's Sam Watson and I've got eight statements for Hutchie and Damo to rate out of ten. Labor's plan to tax large digital platforms like Meta and Google that fail to pay for using Australian journalism is a good one. Two. Eight.
Despite the recent fire bombings, Victorians should be encouraging each other to support Melbourne's nightlife scene by attending venues. Ten. Nine. Nine. Nine. Pass. If Nick Foote didn't report Zach Butters in Gather Round, he would probably still have his role at Sportsbet. I like that one, W. Nine. Ten. It's official. The Melbourne Storm's era of sustained success is over. Three. Six.
Sunday was World Press Freedom Day and social media has made the press more free than it's ever been.
Chapter 2: What is Labor's plan to tax Big Tech and how do the hosts rate it?
Seven. Five. Monday was Star Wars Day, May the 4th, and Star Wars is still the best film franchise ever. Eight. One. Loser interviews in any sport are nearly always more interesting than winner interviews. Eight. Four. The ABC admitting its bluey blunder has cost them $300 million feels like a conservative estimate. 10. 27.
There you go, Damo. Look, I'm not massive into those franchise movies, Hutchie, but Star Wars is the only one that I will occasionally still watch, particularly the first three in order of the publication of them.
Chapter 3: Why should Victorians support Melbourne's nightlife despite challenges?
I agree with the loser interviews. When you answered two on that one, the franchise movies, what's your favourite franchise? Well, I've never been a Star Wars fan, so I've pretty much put everything ahead of it, to be honest. But I'm the minority on Star Wars, and that's probably because I didn't give it – I didn't watch the right time. Is Lethal Weapon a franchise?
Yes.
James Bond, surely? No, leave me out of James Bond. Born Identity, Mission Impossible. No one knows. So maybe Lethal Weapon, actually, upon reflection. I would have ranked higher.
Chapter 4: What impact did Nick Foote's reporting have on Zach Butters' career?
Yeah, the losing coaches are often better, aren't they? Well, I think losing interviews, well, I like to see the excitement of a moment when someone wins, what it means to them. I prefer that to losing. But there are some interesting loser interviews, no question. I think the Nick Foote question was a valid one. Yeah, it'd still be there, I'm sure.
Well, a lot of people didn't know he was working for sport. I think it would have ended up there anyway. given the compliance, but I think it certainly accelerated the exit. Okay. And you and I had some friction in that conversation on the main body, just to refer people back there to the main body. Any time the cane corn's word bobs up in the middle of a conversation.
You can't maturely have it when it does.
Chapter 5: Is the Melbourne Storm's era of sustained success officially over?
Your head just falls off on a swivel and just, woo, away it goes. It's a lack of maturity on your behalf, Hutchie. Is that right? Yeah. And then I thought, I'm a believer in Australian journalism, so I want to be a supporter of that. Yeah, as a deeper conversation to have. But I liked it as a sounding board scorecard topic.
And maybe, W, we might, can we table that topic, please, for discussion next week on the main body? I'll bring some numbers about the digital revenue that's gone out of Australia into those next week with me. You won't believe when you see the numbers.
Chapter 6: How has social media affected press freedom in Australia?
Okay. How it's affected Australian journalism. You won't believe it. I like it. I'll bring that next week. I like it. I've got some back of a truck numbers for you. Okay. That was the scorecard for the sounding board for DrinkWise. If you're choosing the drink, choose the DrinkWise.
