Chapter 1: What controversy surrounded Meghan Markle's visit to Australia?
For too long, Australian law didn't just fail survivors. It forced them into silence. Nina Fennell is a Walkley Award-winning journalist and a survivor who helped overturn damaging gag laws in the Australian justice system. She was the driving force behind the campaign that allowed women to finally speak their own names. Her work doesn't just tell stories, it drives change.
Hi, I'm Gemma Bath, host of True Crime Conversations. And this very special two-part episode isn't just about the justice system. It's about what happens when women are finally heard. A raw, honest look at the power of a single voice, how silence is shaped and how women push through it. Hear my conversation with Nina Fennell on True Crime Conversations.

Chapter 2: How did the media react to Meghan and Harry's Australian tour?
And I'm Tina Burke. And coming up on the show today, some fresh, exciting news. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, if the tabloid reports are to be believed, fled Australia after only four days. So their royal visit is over. We've got to get into exactly what happened, where they went, what the interactions were, what the headlines were.
And I guess ultimately come to a decision if it was a bad move for them or a good move, because there's a lot of competing thoughts on that. But first, we've had the second weekend of Coachella.
We have. And I would like to apologize because last week I kind of said weekend two wasn't as good. No, that was the vibe I was seeing from everyone because it felt like such a... I know people don't stay during the week.
Like, although if you... You had those crazy camping setups. You could stay during the week just to, like, have to not pack up and pack down again. But if you looked online, it was, like, all the influencers fled. Everyone was, like, Coachella was great. See you next year. Like, in their minds, it was over. Everyone pulled their camps down. All of the celebs left.
It did feel like weekend two wasn't going to be the vibe. And then...
but then it was and then weekend two ticket holders were like surprise surprise we had a great time from what i understand from locals coachella weekend one is the one that's like really like influencer heavy and like it's all about like who's there first to like show off that they were there and in the good fit and then weekend two apparently has a more relaxed and chill vibe it's more like music lovers apparently yeah um but weekend two did deliver some surprises obviously kind of

Chapter 3: What happened during Meghan Markle's Besties Retreat appearance?
the performances were essentially the same for all of our leading acts but there were some surprise celebrity cameos that did make i think this weekend a little bit better yeah i'm gonna start with sabrina carpenter yes oh my god i love that i have never had fomo for coachella like maybe three times in my entire life mostly i'm just like i can't wait in line for a dirty bathroom for that long but when i saw madonna come out i would have sold my soul to be in that audience
I would have died to be there. And yet so many people look like they could not care less.
Is that real though? I can't, in my soul, I cannot believe that's real. I've seen reports of people saying that the audience was like very unmoved. In my mind, her coming out on stage with Sabrina should have been the scream that like when Destiny's Child came out beyond Beyonce. Yeah.
Like that's the vibe, right? Yeah. So what I'm hearing conflicting reports from social media, but essentially for anyone who hasn't yet seen the clips, Sabrina was singing her song Juno and usually when she sings it, she kind of goes, have you ever tried this one? And on stage during her concert, that was like the controversial moment that all the mums hated, which is like she'd do a sexy pose.
Yeah. I love that. Every week she'd do it on her different shows, a different sex position.

Chapter 4: What were the highlights from Coachella Weekend Two?
And that's why that girl is creative. And flexible.
Yes. And that's where the phrase like, I'm scared of Sabrina Carpenter and I'm 17 or whatever it was came from. Anyway, she used to do a sexy pose. Instead, this time she goes, have you ever tried this one? The lights go dark. Everyone's like, what's happening? And then Madonna's Vogue starts playing. And obviously the first thing she says is strike a pose. Oh my God, how fun is that?
We're striking a pose to the pose in Juno. But Madonna comes up, they sing that song. They sing one of the songs from Confessions on the Dance Floor. Then they go into Like a Prayer. So they do a bit of a like Madonna, Sabrina medley together. It's very chic, very cute.
However, there is a point within the medley where they stop to talk and Madonna announces that like it's been 20 years since she was at Coachella. She's wearing the same corset, humble brag.
Oh, that was amazing, wearing the same outfit.

Chapter 5: How did Sabrina Carpenter's performance impact the audience?
That's the time you want to be an outfit repeater.
Yeah, exactly. So they do this great performance together. They stop midway and Madonna sort of reflects on where she's at in her career and how exciting this is to be able to come back 20 years later. But there is a point where Madonna says, can you guys hear us? And I feel like that is Madonna for, can you guys put your phones down and dance and have a boogie and a sing-along? Yeah.
And the reason that I feel this is, obviously, Coachella is filmed, so we're watching it. And there were a lot of arguments in the comments with people being like, no, no, the vibe was great. You just can't hear the audience on here. But I have two pieces of evidence. One, Madonna literally saying, can you guys hear us? Which to me is like, rally, please.
And we're not going to call Madonna a liar on this. Exactly. And two, there's so many videos from people who were excited in the pit who were like screaming and singing and filming themselves. And they are surrounded by people standing still, not singing, not doing anything other than filming. The filming at concerts.
And I don't want to sound like a party pooper. In fact, no, I'm not a party pooper.

Chapter 6: What did Billie Eilish's surprise appearance signify?
I'm a party person because I- Because you want there to be a party. Yeah. Well, I just think I understand having a little, like getting a little video because you want to remember the moment.
Oh my God, totally. And you want to post it. Like I understand that. And you always feel like a bit self-conscious when you do. You pull out your phone at a concert now because you're like, no, I'm not going to fill the whole thing.
The correct thing to do is pull it out, grab like 30 seconds, that's all you need, 30 seconds, and then put it back in your pocket. What happens at concerts now, and this is why I sometimes have to sort of shoot evil glares at people next to me, is that they'll just get their phone out and film the entire thing and watch it through their phone.
I'm like, girl, you could have been at home doing that. You'd just stand here for five hours.
And I get like, there's obviously a lot of influencers who monetize their social media videos. And I get, like, I fully get that. But not everyone in that crowd is monetizing a video. And like, yeah, you can film, but like sing along, dance. Like this is a thing with Sabrina. She's said it before when she's brought special guests out.
It happened with Earth, Wind and Fire when they were singing September.

Chapter 7: How did the public perceive Meghan Markle's actions during the tour?
She is bringing out top tier musical guests and the audience could not give less of a shit sometimes. Yeah. And you could see in her face, like she was like, yeah, big moment, guys. Big moment. Get it together.
I have to say something horrific now. And that is the fact that do you think people weren't singing along because they don't know who Madonna is? Not a sentence. Not a sentence. I'm not even kidding. Not a sentence I ever thought I would say. But like, yes.
If I went to some dark places on the internet and I'm talking Instagram comments and threads where I saw people say, oh, I actually saw this whole thread on Instagram that he was sharing, commenting on. And it was this 15 year old girl saying, I think Madonna must be for old people because I've never heard of her.
And then, and I thought she was a troll, but I clicked her on an account and she's real, as far as you can tell from the internet. And all the people chiming in were real. And then I went to all different comment threads underneath posts about it. And so many people were just like, oh, they're not singing because they don't know who Madonna is. That can't be true.
I understand like sometimes, you know, people fall out of like, it's like when Taylor Swift released her last album, people didn't know who Elizabeth Taylor was.

Chapter 8: What conclusions can we draw about the success of Meghan and Harry's trip?
And that upset me, but I've tried to make my peace with it. Well, Elizabeth Taylor.
I mean, you brought it up on multiple pods in the past few weeks.
I know. Well, I just think it's an example, but I guess like, like she hasn't made a movie in a long time and she's passed away and she gets, but the thing is she gets brought up in pop culture all the time, but Madonna is like actively out in pop culture. Yes. Still very much actively out in pop culture.
And her name is brought up all the time and her music is played and she's referenced and she's got a new album coming out. And I just don't understand how anyone in the world could not know who Madonna is.
I don't get it either because as well, like currently, Madonna's song is playing in every Devil Wears Prada trailer. Oh, exactly. So how do you not know the words? Secondly, if you were a person on the internet, how could you have missed the Connor story, like a prayer dance video that went viral with Interview Mag last year? Even just a person online, everyone saw that video.
My mom saw that video. She hadn't seen Hated Rivalry, but she knew the cultural impact. How could you not? have like a TikTok or an Instagram or a Facebook or a YouTube and not have heard like a prayer. Come on now.
And also for all these Gen Zs, like we don't know who she is. Don't say that bullshit to me. I know you all watched Glee. The numbers don't lie. I know. There's a whole Madonna episode of Glee.
I think the thing is maybe that the Coachella crowd.
I agree about this. I'm so sorry.
