How long is this warm spell going to last?

25 May 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 12.486 David McCullagh

Now, the whole country was basking in beautiful sunshine over the weekend. I'm joined now by Andrew Doran-Sherlock from Metairan. Morning, Andrew. Good morning, David. It was pretty nice this weekend. How hot did it get?

12.506 - 32.549 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

So yesterday we got up to 24.8 degrees in Phoenix Park in Dublin, but we will get higher over the next couple of days. So really for today, we're talking widely getting between 23 and 28 degrees, but it will be a little bit cooler near Western and Northern coasts. And we could see locally getting up a little bit higher.

32.669 - 39.576 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

And between today, tomorrow and Wednesday, we certainly would be seeing temperatures in the high 20s. Lovely.

Chapter 2: How hot did it get during the warm spell?

39.676 - 61.026 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

Is that unusual for this time of year? It is. So the average temperatures for May, the highest temperatures would generally range between 13 and 16 degrees. Now, we're on the cusp of switching into June, where the highest temperatures would be 15 to 18 degrees. So it certainly is warmer than average. The current record for highest temperature in May is 28.4 degrees.

61.066 - 71.77 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

Now that was recorded on the 31st of May in 97. We could see higher than that over the next couple of days. So we'll be keeping an eye on that one, certainly.

0

71.834 - 77.462 David McCullagh

Absolutely. So nice today, tomorrow and Wednesday, and after that starts to get cooler again, does it?

0

77.482 - 95.867 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

It does, yes. So it will be dry today, then between tomorrow and Wednesday, chance of an isolated shower, but really most places will stay dry. But we are going to have outbreaks of rain pushing up from the southwest on Thursday, and that will herald a little bit of a change. So while temperatures will remain above average, they will be a little bit cooler in the coming days.

Friday, still mostly dry, but it is looking like it's turning more unsettled for the weekend and temperatures will fall back. Now, they'll still be average or possibly still above average in places, but it will be noticeably cooler than it has been of late.

109.073 - 114.885 David McCullagh

Okay, and unfortunately, of course, that is the bank holiday weekend where a lot of people would have been hoping to make the most of it.

115.507 - 119.151 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

Unfortunately so, but at least we did get at least one good weekend out of this.

119.311 - 126.839 David McCullagh

Absolutely. We shouldn't be greedy, I suppose. And Andrew, what advice would you give to people who are out and about enjoying the sun? Slap on the sunscreen?

127.58 - 142.375 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

Absolutely. There's a lot of resources there on SunSmart about how to protect yourself because the UV index is going to be high for the coming days. But it's also, as people tend to do so in the warmer weather, if you're in or near water, do please take care.

Chapter 3: Is the current weather unusual for this time of year?

148.13 - 154.61 Andrew Doran-Sherlock

Unfortunately, the long-range forecasts have a low skill score for Ireland, so I couldn't say anything at this stage.

0

154.971 - 160.228 David McCullagh

OK, well, we'll have our fingers crossed. Anyway, Andrew Doran, Sherlock of Met Air, and thank you so much for joining us.
