Chapter 1: What happened to the Irish passengers on the Hantavirus ship?

0.031 - 17.907 David McCullagh

Last night, after a week of coordination and planning, the two Irish passengers who were on board the Hantavirus-struck MV Hondias landed safely in Baldonnell. The ship docked off the coast of Tenerife, where all passengers were disembarked and screened before being repatriated to their home countries.

18.007 - 27.456 David McCullagh

A man who was involved in implementing that repatriation for the Irish passengers is Independent Senator and Chair of TIGLIN, Aubrey McCarthy. He joins me now. Morning, Aubrey.

0

27.436 - 29.242 Aubrey McCarthy

Good morning, David. Thanks for having me on.

0

29.262 - 37.311 David McCullagh

Well, thanks for joining us. Now, one of the two Irish people on board the Hondias was your friend, Anne Lane. Have you spoken to her since she got back?

0

Chapter 2: How did the repatriation process for the Irish passengers unfold?

38.219 - 60.598 Aubrey McCarthy

Anne, she was in touch with me last night, well, in the early hours of the morning. All is good and she is absolutely delighted to be back. You know, they touched down just after 9pm in Baldonnell and just a number of us followed the tracker, the air tracker, just to see the plane landing. And, you know, it was huge relief to Anne and all her friends just to see that she made it safely back.

0

60.578 - 87.396 Aubrey McCarthy

yeah um now from talking or from being in touch with her and from your own liaison with the department of foreign affairs what's your impression of how the repatriation went do you know huge credit is due and not only to the department of foreign affairs but also the department of health the air corps it was absolutely professional from the very start so so you know we're always ready to criticize the irish when we get it wrong but this was done second to none

0

87.376 - 101.56 Aubrey McCarthy

So what was done yesterday, they executed a perfect mission and it got them safely back to Ireland. And huge thanks to the Taoiseach and also to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Health. They all worked together and now we have a successful outcome.

0

101.7 - 108.051 David McCullagh

Yeah, and I think you'd been in contact with them as the situation unfolded on Anne Lane's behalf.

0

108.318 - 108.899 Aubrey McCarthy

Yes, I had.

Chapter 3: What was the emotional impact on the passengers during their ordeal?

108.939 - 126.208 Aubrey McCarthy

Yes. Like, remember, this first came to light, I think it was the 2nd of May when it's like, so we're now the 11th. So this has been a long run in. And the passengers were sitting on a ship looking at Cape Verde and not being able to dock. So psychologically... That was a big issue.

0

126.528 - 147.567 Aubrey McCarthy

But Anne Lane, anybody who knows her, a strong lady, a very private person, and she's not somebody who would want to be at the centre of this publicity. So the whole international spotlight would be totally outside her comfort zone. But fair play, everybody worked together. She really was complimentary about Oceanwide, about the ship, about the providers, about the service.

0

147.828 - 153.613 Aubrey McCarthy

So all of that in the initial media reports, they were false and she put truth to that.

0

153.593 - 157.778 David McCullagh

in terms of the stories about rats and all that sort of crack?

0

157.798 - 177.323 Aubrey McCarthy

You see, that was all online, David, and it was all speculation. But the ship itself was immaculate. The food service, immaculate. The way they were able to isolate socially in public areas, et cetera, that was all handled very well. So it's just the social media then went haywire and said there was rats on board.

177.303 - 196.552 David McCullagh

Now, as you say, I mean, that idea of being off the coast of Cape Verde but not able to get off the ship, it must have been very traumatic for all of the passengers and indeed the crew on board. As far as you know, Anne and the other Irish person, they're well physically and mentally, are they? Absolutely.

Chapter 4: How did Anne Lane feel about her experience on the ship?

196.773 - 216.301 Aubrey McCarthy

Absolutely. And very positive as well. As you've mentioned, you know, it must have been psychologically exhausting sitting on a ship, not knowing what's going to happen. You're hearing the medical updates. You're getting the texts from all sides. from home about the uncertainty about the virus. And I'm sure that takes a toll on anybody.

0

216.602 - 228.387 Aubrey McCarthy

But I know the emotional side of these situations would have a huge toll. But being back on home soil, even though you have to quarantine, you're physically safe and at least you're home.

0

228.367 - 248.569 David McCullagh

Yeah, we heard the interim chief medical officer, Professor Mary Horgan, was on Morning Ireland. I don't know whether you heard it, but she was talking about 42 days of isolation are required for anyone who's come off that ship because of the very long incubation period for this disease. So how do you think Anne is going to cope with that? 42 days is a long time.

0

248.549 - 268.923 Aubrey McCarthy

She'll absolutely play by the rules. As I said before, this is her sixth expedition, her fourth time to Antarctica. It's important now that she gets the proper medical guidance, the HSE, quarantining, etc. And she will abide by that 100%. And so one thing is it's important that she also gets privacy during that time.

0

270.246 - 280.125 Aubrey McCarthy

But if you can imagine, David, you're going away on a trip, you don't realise how valuable a home is until you're very far away from it and you can't get there.

280.105 - 290.239 David McCullagh

Yeah, well, thankfully, a happy end thus far anyway, and obviously challenging enough to face into that period of isolation.

Chapter 5: What are the quarantine requirements for passengers returning from the ship?

290.259 - 295.146 David McCullagh

She's a big reader, though, so perhaps time to get stuck into some lengthy books.

0

295.166 - 311.962 Aubrey McCarthy

David, she's written two books before on sculptures. And so I have a feeling there might be another book on the way. Her books are By the Way One and By the Way Two, all about sculptures all around Ireland. So Anne is an avid researcher. She's a worker. She's a reader. So no doubt she's working on something.

0

311.982 - 321.323 David McCullagh

OK. Independent Senator Aubrey McCarthy, friend of Anne Lane, who has thankfully, along with the other Irish person, returned home after that experience.

0

Chapter 6: What future plans might Anne Lane have after her return?

321.343 - 323.308 David McCullagh

Thank you very much indeed for joining us, Aubrey McCarthy.
