Chapter 1: What is the status yellow high temperature warning about?

0.031 - 9.57 David McCullagh

MetErin has just issued a status yellow high temperature warning as record temperatures continue around the country. For the latest, I'm joined by MetErin meteorologist Holly O'Neill. Morning, Holly.

0

10.311 - 12.114 Holly O'Neill

Good morning. Good morning.

0

12.255 - 14.479 David McCullagh

Status yellow, what do we need to be aware of?

0

14.78 - 32.076 Holly O'Neill

Yes, so we have issued a status yellow high temperature warning for today until 6pm tomorrow for counties Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, Kilkenny, Leish and Offaly. And that's to reflect the high temperatures that we are seeing in the forecast for the next two days.

0

32.116 - 42.525 Holly O'Neill

So we have maximum temperatures in excess of 27 degrees, combining that with nighttime minimum temperatures in excess of 15 degrees Celsius. So quite warm.

42.64 - 46.485 David McCullagh

Yeah. And temperatures, I think, could hit up to 30 degrees in some areas.

46.745 - 58.78 Holly O'Neill

Yeah, absolutely. So today the highs are forecasted between 23 to 29, generally possibly getting up to 30 degrees in some places, particularly in Munster and South Leinster.

59.1 - 59.38 David McCullagh

Right.

Chapter 2: How are record temperatures affecting different regions?

59.701 - 63.265 David McCullagh

So the northern half of the country, that bit cooler, I think, is it?

0

63.7 - 74.237 Holly O'Neill

Slightly cooler, slightly cloudier as well this morning, but expected to brighten up. So just seeing a little bit maybe in the 19 to 20 degree range for the north, but still quite mild for this time of year.

0

74.438 - 79.566 David McCullagh

OK, and I presume we're going to be breaking records then for the hottest day in May, are we?

0

80.018 - 107.494 Holly O'Neill

Well, yesterday we did have the provisional record being broke in Shannon Airport. We had 28.6 degrees. The previous record was back in 1997 in Kerry. We had 28.4 degrees Celsius. So quite a slight little increase, but it's still there. So it could be a case we might see it break again today. It's still to be seen. But either way, it's going to be quite a warm or hot day for most people.

0

107.474 - 111.915 David McCullagh

Okay, and I presume everybody will be asking the question, how long is this going to continue?

112.385 - 126.645 Holly O'Neill

Oh, that's always the question that we're asked when this good weather comes around. Really, for today and tomorrow, possibly Thursday as well, but unfortunately we are going to see that high pressure start to shift north-easterwards and we'll get a bit of a breakdown.

Chapter 3: What are the expected temperature highs for today?

126.685 - 132.834 Holly O'Neill

But we will see more in the way of rain or showers over the weekend, but it's still going to be warm, so all is not lost.

0

133.014 - 138.882 David McCullagh

OK, and obviously everybody hopefully will be able to enjoy the good weather, but caution is advised.

0

139.199 - 150.339 Holly O'Neill

Absolutely, yeah. I mean, the UV, sorry, over the next few days is quite high, so we're asking people to be sun smart. And of course, if you are out or on water, please take care and practice water safety as well.

0

150.68 - 154.373 David McCullagh

Absolutely. Holly O'Neill, Metair and meteorologist, thank you so much for joining us.
