Chapter 1: What shocking result did Cape Verde achieve against Uruguay?

0.689 - 25.902 David McCullagh

Football minnows Cape Verde pulled off another sensational World Cup shock overnight with Pico Lopez turning in another incredible display as they drew with two-time winners Uruguay. Laura Power is a Cork woman living in Cape Verde. She joins me on the line now. Laura, good morning to you.

0

27.103 - 27.804 Laura Power

Good morning, David.

0

28.065 - 30.628 David McCullagh

Thank you so much for joining us. That was some night, wasn't it?

0

31.064 - 35.191 Laura Power

It was incredible. Absolutely amazing performance.

0

36.153 - 37.315 David McCullagh

And where did you watch it?

37.335 - 51.199 Laura Power

I watched it actually at home because of the time that it was on us. It was a bit late and it was a school morning as normal here, unfortunately. So, yeah, we had a gang around here at home and it was just the atmosphere was electric.

51.348 - 62.337 David McCullagh

Now, Uruguay, they obviously haven't won the World Cup lately, but they have form in this competition. And Cape Verde shocked them by taking the lead early on.

63.278 - 69.65 Laura Power

They did. They absolutely did and well-deserved. It was a real hard-earned draw for the Blue Sharks team.

71.493 - 81.572 David McCullagh

Now, Uruguay went 2-1 up and probably looked bad, but a sub for Cape Verde, Helio Varela, levelled in the 61st minute.

Chapter 2: How did Laura Power experience the World Cup match in Cape Verde?

83.516 - 86.181 Laura Power

That was after the free kick in the first half.

0

86.768 - 96.759 David McCullagh

Yeah, which is an astonishing goal. And Pico Lopez again in defence, the man from Crumlin, he is a stormer.

0

98.02 - 113.417 Laura Power

Absolute stormer again. He's just been incredible to get to the World Cup initially. They've worked so hard to get there and having a League of Ireland player on the Cape Verde team is just so proud. It's really great.

0

113.397 - 128.2 David McCullagh

And, I mean, we've all heard the story about how he was approached to play for Cape Verde and he didn't even speak the language or anything like that. Have the people there taken him to their hearts?

0

128.517 - 148.102 Laura Power

Oh, yeah. I mean, everyone loves Pico. They really do. We've taken him on. You know, I mean, it's not like he's just popped up. He's been around for the last few years. He's worked very hard with the team. He's now speaking Portuguese and Creole as well. So, yeah, he's very much integrated into the Cape Verde culture now.

148.402 - 153.208 David McCullagh

Right. And you've an online relationship with him?

153.948 - 175.439 Laura Power

We do actually, yeah. I mean, I reached out to Pico when he first joined the team and just said, oh my God, I can't believe there's an Irishman on our team, you know. And yeah, we've been exchanging messages since, just always give him a bit of a morale message before the game. He always replies to say thank you. He's just great. He's really, really good. Yeah, he's been to Cape Verde.

176.36 - 195.766 Laura Power

Obviously, he's been to Cape Verde, but he's been to Sal, the island that I'm on. for his honeymoon. I think it was 2024. Unfortunately, I wasn't on the island at the time. I was travelling myself, but he did, I mean, he was around town and every woman just loved chatting to him and getting photos and he went to the Irish Dubliner bar and yeah, it was great.

196.306 - 200.172 David McCullagh

Now, tell us a bit about yourself, Laura. How did you end up in Cape Verde?

Chapter 3: What role did Pico Lopez play in Cape Verde's performance?

223.138 - 242.692 Laura Power

I ended up taking the opportunity by the horns and I ended up building life here. I have two little girls who are also Cape Verdean Irish. So they can really resonate with Pico's story as well, having the Cape Verdean dad and Irish mom. So, yeah, here we are still here.

0

243.053 - 257.192 David McCullagh

OK. I mean, people will have heard of Cape Verde, but they probably, I include myself in this, don't know an awful lot about it. Now, you're involved in real estate, so I presume you're going to tell me it's wonderful. But anyway, tell us a bit about it, Cape Verde.

0

258.185 - 273.696 Laura Power

Oh my God. So yeah, I mean, it's a destination that I suppose a lot of people still don't know. They haven't discovered, as you said. But I don't think that will be the case much longer, to be honest. You know, I think the Cape Verde team have really done us proud in terms of putting Cape Verde on the map.

0

274.047 - 294.744 Laura Power

So we're three and a half hours from Portugal on a flight from Portugal and we're six hours on a flight from London. Unfortunately, still no flights from Ireland. We're probably the only European country with still no flights. So we really, really need to get Ryanair Aer Lingus behind us and get some flights coming from Ireland to Cape Verde. But yeah, it's a beautiful destination.

0

294.784 - 309.305 Laura Power

It's very like a European Caribbean. You've got turquoise waters everywhere. white powder beaches, loads of hotel groups over here already and more and more coming online. So yeah, it's just a beautiful destination to come and take a holiday at.

309.606 - 310.77 David McCullagh

And what are the temperatures like?

311.864 - 328.928 Laura Power

Temperatures are stable all year round. So they're in the mid-20s all year round, get up to about nearly 30 in the summer months. But because we're so near the equator, David, that's a really, really hot temperature. It's really hot for here. It's an African 26, 27 degree.

328.908 - 358.425 David McCullagh

all year round wow ok sunny everyday blue skies ok sounds great Laura Power Cork woman living in Cape Verde thank you so much for joining us and enjoy the rest of the competition and hopefully Cape Verde will continue to surprise us and give you entertainment they're going to do great again great stuff ok Laura thank you for that I'm also joined by Gavin Cooney sports correspondent with the Irish Times morning Gavin David how are things great now that's some result for Cape Verde and some performance by Pico Lopez

359.131 - 362.174 Gavin Cooney

God, it sounds like an idyllic life in Cape Verde. It does, doesn't it?

Chapter 4: How has Pico Lopez integrated into Cape Verdean culture?

482.039 - 488.228 Gavin Cooney

Remarkable, yeah. Egypt have been competing in the World Cup since 1934, and yet they hadn't won a game at a World Cup

0

488.495 - 515.38 Gavin Cooney

until last night obviously Ireland can can take their minor bit of history along those what nearly 90 years of denying Egypt wins at World Cups but Mo Salah you know the the he rolled back the years to stand up in the second half superb goal to to regain the lead in that game last night and then a corner for for a header for 3-1 so that means they're pretty much through to the knockout round great celebrations you'll see on social media Salah

0

515.36 - 521.874 Gavin Cooney

leading the Egyptian team in Mary Dance. So, major moment in their long football history.

0

521.954 - 527.125 David McCullagh

Yeah, and Belgium failed to beat Iran, so that's why Egypt are looking so good.

0

527.729 - 545.41 Gavin Cooney

Exactly. God, Belgium are, you know, Belgium really have aged, aged without much grace. You know, Kevin De Bruyne looking like a pretty old man. And that was a that was a hectic kind of low quality draw against Iran. Belgium played the guts of the last half an hour of the game with 10 men. Iran weren't good enough to to trouble them, really.

545.47 - 554.04 Gavin Cooney

But, you know, they just they were just really toiled and struggled. And while they may squeak through out of that group, I don't think they'll be troubling anyone in the knockout stages.

554.088 - 561.277 David McCullagh

Okay, so anyway, onwards and upwards with more games to look forward to today. What's piquing your interest?

562.439 - 581.142 Gavin Cooney

Well, any signing of Leo Messi is good for anybody. His Argentina team returned to action against Austria at the sociable hour of 6 o'clock on RT later today. And then this intriguing group, France play Iraq after that. And then if you do want to burn the midnight oil, Norway, Senegal...

581.324 - 603.669 Gavin Cooney

is a very interesting game in that group Senegal need a result having lost to France on the opening game in the opening game Norway obviously easy winners against Iraq in their opening match so that looks that's a battle of two well balanced evenly matched sides and it's one that Senegal really need to get a result in Yeah do you fancy Norway to go a bit further in this competition?
