027 Acid Reflux in Pregnancy. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

19 Aug 2021

Description

Acid reflux or "gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)" pregnancy is when the acid that is normally found in your stomach backs up into your esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. This is a common condition in pregnancy that tends to be found in the second and third trimesters primarily. The good news is it goes away shortly after birth and there are many safe remedies during all trimesters.  The most common non medication recommendations typically include Avoiding lying down after eating Avoiding eating near bedtime Avoid tight fitting bras or clothing Avoid triggers such as fatty foods, chocolate, spicy and sugars Sleep with the head raised on a pillow or wedge The common medications such as antacids surface agents, histamine blockers and proton pump inhibitors are discussed in more detail in this podcast.  Enjoy!
