Eclipse Phase "Continuity" Chapter 2: Broken Signals

As the Kepler’s systems falter and the air grows thin, the crew splits up to hunt for answers. Ellis and Roland force their way into Operations, where the station’s resident AGI, Hans, is still online—but fractured, paranoid, and obsessed with something he calls “gray dust.” Buried in quarantined memory banks, Ellis uncovers disturbing fragments of what happened after their last ego backup: a damaged mining vessel on a collision course, a shuttle launch, and earlier versions of themselves that never returned. Meanwhile, Saul and Sorus push deeper into the compromised sections of the station, trying to stem atmosphere loss and make sense of the deliberate sabotage that’s left airlocks forced open and tools scattered to the void. What they find instead is evidence that Kepler is no longer alone: a docked connection tube from an unknown ship and a foul stench drifting in from the dark. With wireless comms still jammed and their own backups now a source of fear, the crew must decide what they can trust—Hans, their memories, or each other—before whatever reached out to Kepler finishes what it started.
