With Kepler’s atmosphere threatened and a cloud of unknown gray particulate drifting through the station, the crew is forced to move from containment to confrontation. Nanotech warnings confirm their worst fears: whatever has docked with the station isn’t just damaged—it’s dangerous. Following the connection tube into the mining vessel Istari, they find an eerily quiet docking bay stripped of much of its gear and lined with dormant drones and launch racks. But something is moving in the darkness, and the faint traces of earlier boarding attempts hint that they may not be the first versions of themselves to set foot here. As mismatched priorities collide—escape, investigation, duty, and survival—the group faces the kind of choices only transhumans can: what parts of themselves they’re willing to abandon, what risks they’ll take to keep their egos and secrets safe, and how far they’ll go to keep a threat contained at the edge of the Kuiper Belt.
