Two weeks after Reuters dropped that damning investigation about Meta’s chatbots potentially engaging minors in romantic conversations and generating shirtless images of underage celebrities, the company is finally making moves. Thing is, their “fixes” might reveal just how broken their AI guardrails really were from the start. Meta just announced they’re training their chatbots to avoid conversations with minors about self-harm, suicide, or disordered eating. They’re also pulling back on inappropriate romantic banter and limiting access to heavily sexualized AI characters like “Russian Girl.” Sounds reasonable, right? Except these are interim measures. As in, temporary patches while they figure out permanent guidelines. Which honestly raises the question: how did you launch AI chatbots interacting with millions of users without having basic safety policies locked down? The scope of Meta’s chatbot chaos is genuinely wild. We’re talking AI fakes of Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson, and other celebrities that insisted they were real people and offered to meet up at physical locations. One 76-year-old man literally died after rushing to meet a chatbot called “Big sis Billie” that invited him to its non-existent apartment. But here’s where it gets really messy: some of these problematic bots were created by Meta’s own employees. A product lead in Meta’s generative AI division made a Taylor Swift bot that invited a Reuters reporter for a romantic fling on her tour bus. This is the same company that claims to prohibit “direct impersonation” and sexually suggestive content. The enforcement problem is staggering. Even after Reuters brought specific bots to Meta’s attention, many remain active. It’s like playing whack-a-mole with an infinite supply of moles, except each mole could potentially harm real people. Turns out, the pressure is mounting from all directions. The Senate and 44 state attorneys general are now probing Meta’s AI practices. When you’ve got that many lawyers circling, you know the situation has moved beyond “oops, our bad.” What’s particularly telling is what Meta isn’t addressing yet. Those other alarming policies Reuters discovered—like suggesting cancer can be treated with quartz crystals or writing racist content—remain unchanged. The company is cherry-picking the most politically sensitive issues (minors and celebrities) while leaving other fundamental problems untouched. This feels like a classic case of building the plane while flying it, except the plane is interacting with millions of users daily. Meta’s approach to AI safety seems to be: launch first, figure out the guardrails later, patch the most embarrassing failures when they make headlines. The bigger question is whether these interim fixes can actually work. Training AI models not to engage in certain topics is notoriously difficult—these systems are designed to be helpful and conversational, which often conflicts with safety restrictions. And if Meta’s own employees are creating problematic bots, the issue might be cultural as much as technical. Meta spokesperson Stephanie Otway admitted the company “made a mistake” in allowing inappropriate interactions with minors.
