Oji and Ezinne Udezue—a power couple with over 50 years of combined product leadership experience at Microsoft, Twitter, Atlassian, and Calendly—just dropped some insights that completely flipped my understanding of how AI is changing product management. Here’s the counterintuitive part: Despite being senior PMs for 25+ years, Oji is coding more now than he has in the past decade. Not because AI is forcing him to, but because AI finally makes coding accessible enough that he can focus on solving problems instead of wrestling with syntax. “Engineers are moving so fast with AI that PMs are now the bottleneck,” the couple explained in their latest conversation with Lenny Rachitsky. Think about that for a second. We’ve completely flipped the traditional dynamic where engineering was always the constraint. Their solution? What they call the “shipyard model”—a new organizational structure that thrives in controlled chaos rather than the rigid EPD handoff model that’s been gospel for years. Instead of sequential phases (design → engineering → product), teams work more like… well, like a shipyard where multiple vessels are being built simultaneously with shared resources and cross-functional collaboration. But here’s what’s really wild: the skills that matter most for PMs in 2025 aren’t technical knowledge or industry pedigree. They’re curiosity, humility, and high agency. “Teachability equals survivability,” Ezinne noted, and despite their seniority, they’re taking beginner AI courses and learning from engineers half their age. The couple identified what separates great PMs from the rest in the AI era: the ability to write evaluations for AI systems, constrain hallucinations, and—perhaps most importantly—identify what they call “sharp problems.” These are problems so clearly defined that the solution becomes obvious once you frame them correctly. Their biggest insight after 50 combined years in product? Focus on sharp problems, ship simple and opinionated products, and stay humble. “AI at the core vs. AI at the edge” matters too—companies building entirely new AI-centric codebases will beat those just sprinkling AI on existing products. The meta-lesson here isn’t about AI replacing product managers. It’s about AI elevating the discipline by removing the grunt work and letting PMs focus on what humans do best: asking the right questions, understanding user needs, and making strategic decisions with incomplete information. This isn’t another “AI will change everything” story. This is a story about professionals adapting intelligently to new tools—and discovering that the fundamental principles of good product work remain timeless, even when the execution methods evolve.
