An hour ago, I was deep in the weeds writing a comprehensive guide about how to use AI while making it look less like AI. Pages and pages about detection algorithms, linguistic fingerprints, professional frameworks—all focused on gaming the system. Then it hit me like a brick wall: here I am, obsessing over whether my writing sounds human enough, while I have notebooks full of ideas about ADHD that could actually help people understand a condition that ruins lives when it’s misunderstood. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember (I’m the guy who had the Xanga instead of MySpace, who writes 800-word Facebook posts, who you NEVER want to text unless you’re ready for a novel). But I’m also the guy with tens of thousands of notes, essays, and manifestos sitting in digital purgatory because I could never seem to word them right or convey the story in a way I didn’t hate. And suddenly I realized: I don’t care about what AI sounds like. Neither should you. Yes, there’s nuance here (there always is), but I refuse to lose my main point in a sea of careful qualifications. The obsession with “does this look too much like AI?” is missing something way more powerful. We’re getting distracted, worried about what other people think, whether our writing looks enough like “real human words,” when we should be asking: Am I getting my point across? Does it make sense? Will people understand what I have to say? Is this important? How many great ideas are sitting in your drafts because you haven’t had a chance to “humanize” the text? I have thoughts about why we punish ADHD kids for being distracted instead of helping them focus. About teachers taking away recess—the one thing that actually helps—as punishment. About therapists telling parents their kids will “grow out of it” while those same kids grow up battling addiction and unemployment because nobody understood what they were dealing with. About people calling ADHD medication a “crutch” while never questioning glasses for nearsightedness. These ideas matter. They could make a fucking difference. But they’re trapped in my head, my notebooks, and endless documents on my computer because I’ve been too busy worrying about whether my delivery system passes some arbitrary authenticity test. Here’s what I’m realizing: trying to find your voice while having AI write for you isn’t the issue. The issue is missing the point entirely—which is delivering a message, translating that gibberish in your head into clear words, expressing yourself and your opinions in ways that actually land. The question I’m going to be asking from now on isn’t “how do I use AI to help me write without sounding like I used AI?” (I’m not sure I care anymore.) It’s “how do I use AI to help me express myself clearly and in ways that can actually make a difference?” Because at the end of the day, people don’t need more perfectly human-sounding content. They need ideas that matter, delivered in ways they can understand and use. Everything else is just noise.
