Chapter Four, Make a Toast. Part One of Two.
We walked down the trail in silence for a long time. I think we were still trying to process everything that's happened. Our worlds changed in the blink of an eye. I know Zach doesn't really think there's a cure for whatever this zombie disease is, and that they aren't really human anymore. But looking at their faces, it's hard to forget they were once humans. Friends. Even brothers. If we ever make it off this island, how are we going to live with what we've done? I feel weird. Are you sick? No, not weird like that. Like, I'm not really sure what the point is anymore. Of what? Of all this. Hiding in fish huts, hiking for miles, trying not to be killed by a monster. Or turned into one.
The point is to keep going. To survive. Get to Avalon and get back to our families. We can't give up.
We don't even know if your family will be there.
They'll be there.
Well, if they're alive.
What? Well, what about after that? What if we do make it to Avalon and back to the mainland and the disease or whatever is there too? That's a possibility. What do we do then? Just keep running until we're finally caught and we die?
No. We keep going. No matter what. I mean, we have to keep going and survive. Because if we don't, no one will know what happened to the other scorpions.
Or the hiker.
Or the other campers.
Or... Chase.
Okay, so it's our job to make sure that the story gets told, so that they're not forgotten.
