Chapter 2: What legacy did Neale Daniher leave behind?

2.233 - 24.958 Gerard Whateley

We'll take pause for the next hour and bask in the life and legacy of Neil Danaher. Change tack on the messages that you're sending through and maybe share a thought or two along the way. Gary and Tim were brilliant on the ramble this morning and we'll follow that lead in this 11 o'clock hour. We lost the best of us yesterday and it didn't take Neil Danaher's passing to understand that.

He was the personification of that proverb, a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

Chapter 3: How did Neale Daniher raise awareness and funds for MND?

34.087 - 57.972 Gerard Whateley

That was Neil in his battle against what he dubbed the beast that is MND, a disease with little public profile or understanding and less funding when he was first diagnosed. His determination raised tens of millions of dollars for research and began a determination to find a cure. He lit the fire, and that was Neil to the core of his being.

Taking in all the various recollections in the hours after his passing, there was a mix of mythology and wisdom. The prodigiously talented player denied his chance. His career lives in fleeting glimpses, in imaginations, and in what might have beens.

Chapter 4: What personal challenges did Neale Daniher face during his battle with MND?

75.952 - 97.649 Gerard Whateley

His coaching career is, well, it's from the hot gospel, full of wild ups and downs and marked with great affection from player and fan alike. And his public activism drew us all to his shoulder. The power to choose the fight in the face of insurmountable adversity. We had him longer than we could have imagined.

98.451 - 112.118 Gerard Whateley

He stretched a 27-month diagnosis to 13 years, and it's easy to believe in a higher power offering such strength to his work. It gave us moments to express our admiration and gratitude.

Chapter 5: What impact did Neale Daniher have on the community and sports culture?

112.267 - 132.119 Gerard Whateley

the Australian of the Year Award, the Guards of Honour at the past couple of King's birthdays amid standing ovations from 80,000 of us wearing those beanies. Neil saw the impact of the fire he lit, knowing he would never sit in the shade of the tree he planted. We lost the best of us yesterday.

133.341 - 162.664 Neale Daniher

MND's a killer. It's a bastard of a disease, I call it the beast. I personalise it because I'm trying to fight it. If you want your worst enemy to die and have a disease that hangs around for a while, MND is the one you go with. Once you're diagnosed, you get a death certificate with it because it kills 100% of people who are diagnosed with it. In average, it takes 27 months to kill you.

Chapter 6: How can we continue Neale Daniher's fight against MND?

163.425 - 174.657 Neale Daniher

It'll take a bit longer to kill me. That's my life. There's no cure or no treatment yet, but we as mankind can do all amazing things. Where there's a will, there's a way.

174.94 - 192.797 Gerard Whateley

Where there's a will, there's a way. He lit the fire. These clips are so precious, captured from Melbourne and from Collingwood across the years. We played chunks of it on 360 last night to remember the wisdom and the philosophy of Neil Danaher, what he taught us all and what he has left us as a legacy.
