Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Whiteley on SEN. Steen got up high. Going to spark them is Dacos. Off the deck to half forward. Schultz. Handball inboard to Crisp. Now to Dacos. Quick hands were good. Darcy Cameron, a standing start. Snap. It's on its way. It's just short. Elliott on the goal line. Dacos is there.
Mops it up.
Nick Dacos, the last quarter exploits of his 100th game. That will last. That will become part of his folklore. He is the trigger for our nerdy stats today. Peter Bluch is with me. Bluch, welcome. How are you, Gerard?
Chapter 2: What milestones did Nick Dacos achieve in his 100th game?
I'm well. So now that we've got the full catalogue of his 100 games, we can get to work on great 100 gamers. We can, but first, let me vote. Happy Queenslander to get rid of opening round as well, mate. We're all opposed to it up here as well, so back that. Good to hear. Nick Dacos is the 2,536th player to play 100 games, which represents 19% all-time, of which 52% have been since 1987.
The competition sort of went national. So it's been a long journey. The first 100-gamer was Charlie Panam at Collingwood in 1902. He was a member of their very first side. the son of a Greek migrant whose family name originally was Panamopoulos. I knew I wouldn't be able to say that. A famous brother of Albie Panam and father of Albie Jr. and Charlie Panam and grandfather of Lou Richards.
So it was a big, big name in footy. So one of the greats of Collingwood. I don't know whether you want to go through that. Perhaps the first 100-gamer at the more recent clubs is more interesting.
Dwayne Lamb at West Coast, Roger Merritt at Brisbane, Chris McDermott at Adelaide, Shane Parker at Fremantle, Darren Mead at Port, Tom Lynch at the Gold Coast, and Toby Green, the big Molson man for this weekend, was the first at the Giants. All right. Yep, the Dacos 100th game, Carlton versus Collingwood. How good was it?
Well, it was magnificent, and it'll be another three-voter, but there's a lot who had the three votes before. But statistically, at least from a possession viewpoint, it wasn't the best. There have been three who had 43 possessions. Nathan Buckley, Nathan Buckley, Tom Rockliffe and Seb Ross, they had 43 each. Rod Ashman at Carlton, back in 1978, had 42. Zach Merritt and Jacob Hopper had 41.
Andrew Carrazzo had 40. And three guys at 39 as well. Colin Hounsell at Sydney back in 83.

Chapter 3: Who are the notable players that reached 100 games before Nick Dacos?
Scott Thompson at 88. And Adam Scherer. And just one off the top, I got dug up separately. Most goals in the 100th game was Tony Lockett. In 1988 at the MCG against Hawthorne, he kicked nine sevens. They led all day and then lost by 16. St Kilda still got all three Brownlow votes, which was a bit odd. I would not have got Andrew Carrazzo with 40 disposals in his 100th game, so salute to him.
You gave me this for 360 last week. Most disposals in 100 games, and Nick Dacos has long been the top of this class. Yeah, he's almost 100 ahead now. Dacos, 2-9-6-1. Tom Mitchell, 2-8-6-7. Greg Williams, 2-8-4-8. Matt Crouch, Clayton Oliver, Sam Walsh, Tom Green, Tom Rockwith, Chris McDermott, Mark Bairstow, Adam Treloar, Patrick Cripps, Caleb Sorong, Jack McRae,
Brad Crouch, Barlow, Robert Harvey, Joel Selwood, Lockie Neal, Simon Atkins, Zach Merritt, Matt Prudis, Taylor Adams, Wayne Richardson, and just down to Noah Anderson, who was the 25th. They're mostly current players, which I guess is indicative of what the game's become.
So given that, is Chris McDermott at nine and Mark Bairstow at ten are pretty great achievements, given the explosion of statistics since then? Yeah, absolutely outstanding. But then go back to Wayne Richardson. I mean, that's an era ago. That's two eras ago almost, two generations ago. So it shows what a wonderful player the former Collingwood captain was.
Most goals in the first 100 games, this was a name that was mentioned when we were glowing around first 100 games, there was one not to be missed. Yeah, and look, I only went back to the top 10 because it really doesn't happen these days. It's become a bit of an irrelevant stat. But Peter Hudson was fully 30% above the next one. He kicked 595 goals in his first. Not bad, really.
He's averaging almost... Six a game from the start. Bob Pratt, South Melbourne, great, was his second, 458. Peter McKenna, 457. Dunstall, 419. And Modra, 400. Then a couple of old-timers, Jack Moriarty, Sel Murray. and then Taylor Lockett and Peter Sumich rounded out the top 10. But that's the Peter Hudson Award for sure. Yes, 595 goals in his first 100 games.
Most Brownlow votes, and this is Anne counting. Oh, absolutely. Well, Nick Dacos, he's already 17 in front of Nat 5. That's to the end of last year. He had 109. I reckon he's got at least six or seven more. So he's going to be well up on five, who is second with 92. Rowell, 77. Cripps, 75. John Newcombe, 70, has come from a long, long way, been a mid-season hooky pick-up.
Platten, Peter Matera and Judd, and Tom Mitchell, 68, Oliver, 67, Selwood, 66, Walsh, 66, Warner, 64, Rockleff, Kelly, Tom Green, Sorong, Goulden, Bontempelli, Cotchen and Anderson round out the top 20. Yeah, so he's 109 and I do think he's probably got double figures already when we do the count. He's going to be a big, big way.
Now, given the concentration of votes, salute to John Platten and Peter Matera there at 6 and 7 on 68 votes. Youngest player to reach 100 games? It's his own. He started when he was about 13. Kim Watson, he's the only one who got there before he was 21.

Chapter 4: What statistics highlight the significance of 100-game milestones in footy?
He was 20 years, 273 days of age. That's We do forget how good Tim Watson was, but that's a real sign.
A couple of old-timers, Ken Newland and Albert Collier were next best, Simon Madden, John Murphy, Lance Whitnall, Wells Ikey from St Kilda back in the, whenever it was, 100 million years ago, Chris Grant, Alan Martello, Robert Walls was the 10th youngest, Russell Green, and Gary Pert, the only other one below, before his 22nd birthday. So only 12 of them got there before they were 22.
And oldest to get there. Well, this is an interesting one. Bill Proudfoot, who played for Collingwood in the VFA. Then he was a member of their first VFL side in 87. He debuted at 28. He was the first Collingwood player to represent Victoria in 1894. Collingwood captain in 1901. Premiership player for a couple of years. He played his 100th game at 36 and finished at 36 years and 35 days.
He's... It's Billy McCarter, Harry Burton, Jim Jackson... I'll go down to the recent player, if that makes sense. Yep. He's 22nd on the list, 33 years and 57 days old, is Lockie Keefe. Yes. The son of the Gimpy news agent, wonderful person, great fella. He was 33, 57. James Pozziadli was 32 plus. And Graham and Polly Farmer was 32 plus as well. So that's an interesting one.
Who won the most games in their first 100 games? Interesting. Travis Varko is the winningest 100-gamer, 87-13 at 87%. Joel Selwood is two wins behind him at 85%. Harry Collier, old-time, was 84 and a draw. A couple of old-timers, Clyde Laidlaw, Albert Collier, Alex Lang, Billy Libbeth. Dunstall, since next on the list at 82 with Greg Deer. Matthew Stokes, 82.
Jack Beveridge, of course, the grandfather of Luke. is at 81. Platton's in there at 81. Harry Taylor, 81. Isaac Smith at 81. Tom Hawkins, Luke Bruce and Paul Poplow at all above 80. So a lot of Hawthorne players and a lot of Geelong players, not surprisingly. Travis Varko wins that award and the player who lost the most games in their first 100. Yeah, no, we've got to feel sorry for this.
A guy called Johnny Gregory, he played 156 games at North from the 20s to the 30s. He was the first player at the club to get to 150. He started his career 0-1-13 in 26, and then he went 3-13, then 5-13, a very successful year for him, 1-16, 1-17, and then in his last year in 31, he was none, which he got to 100. He was 0-18.
So he went 0-18, but he did pole 10 votes in the Brownlow Medal that year. to finish 14th in a medal that was won by Bunton from Alan Hopkins as well. So it just shows in the old days, it didn't matter if you went 0-80, you could still get 10 votes in the brown light. Johnny Gregory, 10 wins from his first 100 games with North Melbourne. Blooch, tremendous. Thank you. Good man. Take it, mate.
Cheers. Nerdy stats on the 100 gamers.
