Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Waitley on SEN. The events of round 14, how to make sense of it, what did it all mean? That's why Adam Simpson is here every Monday for the means test. Hello to you, Simo. Morning, Gerard.
Chapter 2: What insights does Adam Simpson share about the events of Round 14?
Bit of Socceroos talk before we start.
Yeah, well, I think I was like a lot of people. What do you put on the footy on your phone, the soccer on the TV? It just felt a little bit different. I thought... We are lucky when we get umpires. When it's the World Cup, I just feel like the umpires are against us all the time. And it's like we're, you know, we don't know the rules or something.
It's over the last, I don't know, every time there's a World Cup and I feel like we get the rough end of the stick.
Chapter 3: How do the Socceroos influence the conversation in this episode?
And whether we're just the yobbos who go too hard or we don't understand what the real rules are. But there was a free kick or a non-paid free kick at the start of the game. I thought, oh, hang on. We're okay here. We can go a bit harder than we normally do. So, yeah. Yeah, it was such a great day. It was a really good Sunday.
And I was like everyone else, the basketball, the football, the soccer, everything there was there for you to watch and enjoy and be on your own a little bit too, just with your family. I think a lot of people did that if you weren't out, you know, on the celebration. So, yeah, it was a great day. And, yeah, I was really impressed with ā the, the, knowing the rules, I suppose. I don't know.
It just felt like we're more engaged in the, in the game when on the world scale, not just, it's like the NBA, the umpire did a little bit differently. I felt like we got it pretty quickly.
Yep. What about Tony Popovich and the. The self-belief to go, I'm doing this. And if it's, if we get overawed, like you, you couldn't have held back the criticism, but he, you just trust your instincts, the buildup, the team cohesion you've got, the adventure of youth rather than the surety of experience.
God, it was a good piece of coaching. They're not playing the captain, playing a 20 year old or 22 year old. And the vice-captain. And then the art of coaching, I suppose, do you do anything, this is AFL talk, but the two teams you're playing have written you off publicly. It's like, oh, how good is that?
How good is that?
Give me more. Do they do the old newspaper articles in the locker room?
It would have been irresistible.
Oh, and then even the double down afterwards, uh, from the Turkey, uh, captain. So yeah, you're dominant. Did he mean dominate just possession? Is that what he meant by dominate? Yeah. Oh, he probably feels like he dominated the whole game. I don't know. Oh, it's just, it would have been such an easy pregame. Um, yeah. I wonder if it's the same when it's at that level.

Chapter 4: What strategies does Adam Simpson suggest for handling the bye week?
Meet at 7.30, 8 o'clock and walk out in the bay up to at least your belly button, Liam, not your ankles. I wonder if there's an incentive there. He doesn't want money. Just don't give me the recovery stuff. Um, even the day off coming in and doing, you know, Pilates and the activations. No, if you kick five, there's no, there's not necessary. In fact, that would be a great, um,
For a lot of small forwards, incentive is you don't have to do recovery unless you need it. Because sometimes, you know, you need it. But a lot of times it's like, I'm good. Just let me train and let me play. And he's that guy. So whatever they're doing to keep him mentally fresh, because he looks happy, which is a big thing for Liam. And he needs supply.
Unfortunately, the last couple of years at West Coast, we just couldn't get him the ball. And he had to do everything. Whereas now they're happy to play him as a disconnected forward because you're going to get a good enough supply and recovery. He won't let you down too often. So.
And Jack Silvani is, so he's paying his way.
Yeah. They're all paying their way. Longer contract, but he's, he's had a good season. I think they've all had reasonably, you know, they're all playing around their, Standard, aren't they? You know, I don't think Silvani's going to be an A grader. I think he's a solid B grader, declining the same. It doesn't matter what money you pay.
Just because you pay a lot doesn't mean you're going to be an A grader. So I think they're playing their roles to a certain point. I think they've all got a little bit of upside, but Liam's probably playing a little bit above what they thought, in my eyes. All right.
They got that right. The recruitment of Liam Ryan and the big issue, the Saints win the eight-point game against the Giants. We're in the round 14 means test with Adam Simpson.
Want to have your say? Ring Gerard on 1300 736 736. Now, back to Waitley. I don't think he had an impact on the game, which was kind of expected and understandable. He's missed a bit of footy, missed a month. It's hard to sort of then slot straight back in and have an impact. Particularly at that size, you know, you're going to be defended pretty much all the time.
So I don't know if we necessarily helped him a lot with some of our entries. You know, it's a bit on him, it's a bit on us. But we felt like with his quality, he's one of these guys that's capable of turning it on. He didn't tonight, so, you know, I got that wrong. But he'll be better for it.

Chapter 5: Who are the standout players discussed in terms of performance this season?
And are we all in on that? And are we chasing a premiership this year? That type of vibe? Or is there a bit of unrest with so-and-so's playing and he shouldn't be? He's going to leave anyway. That type of talk creeps in. So the selfish mindset from a playing point of view. Then the conversation about the coach. That's the worst one to have. I'm not sure that's there.
And then there's a connection with your players. Like, are we all in this together? We're united in our group. I'll got your back no matter what. I'll never pot you guys publicly because we are, we are in this together. And I've had a couple of, you know, when are we going to grow up sort of conversations from Dimmer? So that's sort of there.
Then there's the product, you know, the top four around that midfield last year without Petrarca and Wits was a big part of that. So what's happening? Why are they outing the clearances? And that's just the one little part of the game that I thought they'd be pretty good at. I showed some vision last year on 360 about they remind me of Richmond back in the day, but they're good at clearances.
And now they've just gone back to Richmond at the day, but not as good as Richmond back in the day. So the back half transition's good. They've got good speed. Their forward meter's going by hand. That's part of their game, but not all of it. So I like that. They've got enough talent there, but they're just falling down in some of the areas that I thought they'd be better at.
And that's mainly around the midfield. And the midfield... There's winning the ball, there's receiving the ball, and then there's getting it back off your midfield, off the opposition. And in the midfield, they'd be in the bottom four at that, Gerard. And so intercept possession, if you do the triple threat with the individuals, there's never a Gold Coast player in that.
So contested possession, score involvements, intercept possessions. Petrak at the start of the year was kicking four and having 30, and he'd have one intercept possession. And that's the same on the weekend. Three of their four mids had one intercept possession.
So
You know, the balance when you have an Atkins in your side, he's up for everything, you know. Butters, he had six on the weekend. So Dawson had six on the weekend. Who's their talent that likes getting their hands dirty on the opposition? So there's a bit going on there. So that's not everything, but you've got to have your Dunkley. Where's your Dunkley? And that's Tuk Miller.

Chapter 6: What factors contribute to a team's success during the finals?
I heard Kingy talk this morning on Fireball about what's happened to him because he's the one that needs to be the support mechanism to take out the best opponent. It's not really there at the moment. So, um, a bit going on. Um, they've had two really tough teams. They've played Brisbane and they've played Geelong and Geelong.
So let's just take a little bit of a breath on that, but the next month is very, very important to, to where they sit.
Are there issues solvable in season? Is what your, so the systematic stuff.
Yeah.
Does that click one week to the next or is that a much longer term project?
Well, that's what the buy should represent. That's what I would have thought they would have got to work on from a coaching point of view. Hey, we're 18th at this part of the game. Let's get better. This is a marginal game for us and we're going to do it this way, boys. So when you're two weeks in and you're still 18th and admittedly playing two good sides. Did they do it?
Um, do they need to change personnel in there? Um, I know they've sort of pivoted with the ruck. So Moyle's now rucking on his own. So. Yeah. And how long do you need to give it before you go, geez, we didn't get that right, that buy period? Because that's the time to improve. Honestly, it's really hard to improve on a six-day break, seven-day break. You're traveling every second week.
But when you have your 10 to 14-day break, you've got to chase something. And I wonder if they're a little bit distracted. I don't know. Come off a really bad loss, didn't they, with North Melbourne in the second half? Yeah. Yeah, let's just wait and see. But their draw, I mean, Hawks, Freeman or Collingwood and Adelaide coming up. So they're going to get going pretty quick.
And you compare that to a Kingsley conversation. Um, he's so calm and they're in the same spot on the ladder. So interesting to see what, um, what will take place in the coming weeks and the pressure seems to be building.

Chapter 7: How do coaching strategies evolve throughout the season?
I wonder if it's more about the club at the moment than on field. Yeah. It's intriguing about how they're going to judge it because are they going to select the coach in the next four to six weeks? So he hasn't got 10 weeks. Yeah.
I suspect he probably does. What? There's no reason for them to rush.
Yeah. But I would have thought in the next five weeks there will be something. There'll be a decision in five, six weeks, won't there?
No. Okay. I don't think so. Yeah. All right. Well, how long does it take? Well, they haven't even started there. Well, they're going to be different.
Yeah.
Don't worry about the idea of.
Okay. Anyway, so he's on, if he's part of the mix, then there's got to be some KPIs around internal and the club, which definitely, I think there's some clarity around that. And then, then on field is, listen, mate. Yeah. This time you've got so many injuries, just keep them connected.
Try and play with a bit of spirit and try and, you know, engage the fans as much as you can, because we want to bring, we still need crowds and gives, you know, the kids that's important, but who's telling him that right now, or is he's telling. the club, this is what we need to do.
So I think we, we would guess from the outside, he and the president are very close. So none of this is happening by accident. And so whatever they're doing, they're doing in lockstep for the time being. And then who knows how it pans out once other voices are involved. Sure. But yeah, what, what, what is our purpose at the moment?

Chapter 8: What are the implications of player injuries on team performance?
Having made a complete hash of it last week. Brisbane are creeping up now.
Control, alt, delete.
Okay.
The seedings for Australian outdoor living from blinds to kitchens because life's best moments happen outdoors every season. All right. So that makes Thursday's conversation a beauty with the games that are in store for us.
Looking forward to it. I'm going to ask IO about who the best performers are in the media press conferences, the coaches. Where's your coach rank? That's the means test.
